I know just how you feel. When my mom passed away I took a lot of her clothes - they were nice quality and fit pretty well. But we just didn't have the same style and most don't really work for me. I am gradually culling them from my wardrobe.

I agree with most other commenters - pretty jacket, looks good on you, but you don't feel good in it - time for it to go to a good home.

JK, I totally hear you about the sentiment and letting go of these things. My mom’s been gone for 14 years now, and I’m letting go of a little more each year. I’m about to give my sister a bunch of items (small furniture pieces, silverware, etc) that we’ve had and used for those years, because we are renovating and the pieces don’t work for our new plans. I figure I’ve had the time to enjoy them and I’m happy my sister gets that opportunity now. But it’s not easy!

Bijou and Ophelia and Angie , so many complicated emotions around inherited stuff right? I regret giving away moms furniture but given that I live overseas and couldn’t ship it, I felt I didn’t have much choice. I hung onto clothes just because they were portable…. But I’ve been trying to wear a few of her jackets lately and the cut just bothers me. I think my body may not fit well with Talbots!

Janet, so right, there’s velvet and then there’s velvet. Lots of different qualities and cuts out there.

I must say, you are wearing it well. Chrissie Hynde would approve. But if it isn't for you, pass it on. There are dozens of velvet blazers on eBay if you change your mind.

I just donated a velvet blazer (Jones New York) because it felt frumpy. So well made, a gorgeous burnt orange, but still . . . not right anymore.

I donated some of my mom’s stuff & regret it. I think it depends on how sentimental you are about those items.
A manager at Goodwill (where I took the stuff) told me less than 25% gets sold, so while I like to think my mom’s belongings would be rehomed, the reality is it might end up being shipped to be another country’s problem or sent to a landfill here. I decided to hang on to the rest of her stuff.
Selling the blazer could avoid that if it bothers you, & get some cash for you! It really does look good on you though. It’s a great color! I like useless peplums so I’m biased.

It looks good on you in the photo, but I totally get it. If it doesn’t feel good to wear it, I think it’s best to pass it along to someone who loves it, so you can be open to a replacement that you actually can’t wait to wear!

I find velvet blazers surprisingly hard to source. I have wanted one for a while but they seem either too structured and stiff or too floppy. Cheap and shiny in some cases or on the other hand just too expensive to justify. Many are too formal or too traditionally tailored for what I want. I think Brooklyn has a really great one, but I live too far away from her to go steal it. ;-D

You look awesome in the photo. I like the cut of it. However in my experience with things like this that you really don't enjoy wearing……. You are unlikely to suddenly change your mind about it…..
but I say….. be patient with yourself. If you aren’t quite ready to make a decision no need to rush it.
Or maybe find a dark velvet blazer you really love, and have your mums initial sewn inside it on a little patch of something.. Or maybe you could use this velvet fabric and have a little clutch purse, make up purse or jewelry roll made out of it? Of course you might need to search till you find someone who can make it for you…

I had a similar velvet blazer (complete with a 'dumb back peplum' too lol) that I donated a few months back - whilst I *could* technically keep wearing it (had it for years), something about the fabric & cut just weren't making me feel fab compared to the other (fitted, collarless) toppers I'd reach for instead.

I held onto it for a while as a WFH blazer but, now that I actually have a knit jacket for that, I'm good with letting it go for someone else to enjoy it instead.

Not sure whether that helps you with your mum's situation, but I'm sure you have other clothing to remember her by AND feel fab in, right? Or another outfit lab may be in order!

Your styling skills are amazing, you look fabulous in the jacket. But, if you are not wearing it, it is time to let it go. Items such as this come with too much emotional baggage for me to truly enjoy. I have earrings and a necklace that were my Mum’s and she gave to me whilst alive, I wear them all the time. A bracelet and ring that were hers, acquired after her death always make me feel a little sad, are rarely worn, they just never feel like they are mine.

Well you look incredible in the photo! And I like it just on the hanger.
But with my mother now gone for 22 years, I have kept gradually reducing what I inherited from her. I still wear one woollen jumper (sweater to you) with cute little kiwi and tiki (Māori motif) on, that she bought mid 90s, and keep her 1964 wool coat for sentiment. Much of the crockery etc is gone now, much did not suit today’s lifestyle and my attachment to her things has slowly waned unless I loved the thing for itself.
I think follow your heart?- if your heart knows. Mine doesn’t always know!

I inherited this teal velvet blazer from my mom when she passed. I like the color and I like velvet. But the cut of the blazer is super boxy, as she preferred but I do not. Also, I hate the lining and the tacky-looking "velvet" button. And it has the world's dumbest little peplum at the back. I found the exact item on Poshmark for illustration pics, and also dug out an old picture of me wearing it a few years ago during an outfit creation session. Perhaps the only time I have actually worn it??

What do you think? I have somewhat sentimental feelings about it because it was mom's, but I truly don't use it and, worse, it prevents me from buying a velvet item that I actually LIKE because I always think "well I already have that velvet blazer....."

I think I'm getting to the point where I'm ready to take another look at the wardrobe items that I inherited from Mom. At first I just took everything that remotely looked like it might work for me. But now I'm wanting to shed some weight from my wardrobe.
