Brooklyn, thank you. The yellow headed blackbird is one of my favorites. They are usually at marshes, and their call has been described as a rusty screen door. The day we drove down it was 95F. At 5pm it was still 94. Do I like it? Noooooooo

Suntiger, thank you. I’m going to give Athleta a try.

I love the photos so much. The yellow head blackbird (I don’t think we have them) is so pretty and owls are always awesome. Thanks for sharing.

You look fab. And I’m actually jealous of your hot weather. What’s happened to me!

Bijou, thank you. I’m glad you’ve started your vaccinations. We were still very careful even though we were vaccinated. They do not provide 100 percent protection.

Wow, I always admire your bird watching hobby, even though I am not crazy about birds myself. (I do love the look of the owl, and birds are tweeting loudly outside my window right now, which I enjoy, so I really don't know what my bird issue is.)
Anyway, you were perfectly prepared and the pictures are amazing!

Such fabulous photos and a great way to enjoy LV nature safely. I am so glad to hear that you are fully vaccinated - it makes travelling so much safer for you and everyone else. I have had my first Astrazeneca vaccine and need to wait another 12 weeks until the repeat dose (as Astra works best with a 3 month wait between jabs).

I keep my phone in a runners belt when I hike. Keeps it secure, but handy for photos. I only take pictures of things that are large and don’t move, like mountains and lakes - birds are WAY beyond my photography skill set!

Wow, JAileen .... i learned something today ! It makes perfect sense . Many in our town have been tracking the hummingbird migration. They arrived a couple of days ago. And today we saw our first oriole. Other people have seen blue birds which i haven’t seen in years !

Sharan, thank you. I wear the Patagonia skort bike riding. We are very casual, not serious cyclists. I don’t know how strong the wind was, but STRONG! Thanks for the link to the dresses. I’ll peruse them soon.

Isabel, thank you. I just love owls. What we went down for was the spring migration. The birds are flying from their wintering area, possibly South or Central America, and are on their way to their breeding grounds. They are flying over miles and miles of sand and rock and then suddenly they see some green and they drop down for a rest and something to eat. There’s a rest stop about ten miles from Tonopah that is famous for the species spotted there. We saw quite a few birds just getting a drink from a puddle. Another popular place is the former water treatment plant. And we went to two cemeteries yesterday. All the places we went to have trees and water.

I enjoy your photos, Janet. Your outfit looks perfect for the day. The wrap skort looks really cute, and I can see how the wrap would be a really bad feature in the wind. I was looking recently at some skirts for cycling and thought the same thing: why would anyone design a cycling skort with a wrap? I did see these dresses, which I would wear over cycling shorts, and which have the option of back pockets. Maybe they would work for you.

Ophelia, we got outdoor cameras for spotting wildlife. Our neighborhood has had bears recently. All we’ve ever spotted in our yard are raccoons and cats. Generally our yard is cat free due to our top notch terrier security system.

Phoebe, thank you. Odd junctures in trees is exactly how you find owls. Except for burrowing owls, of course. :)

JAileen, yes, the birders are a dedicated lot. My good friend is a birder. She fled the tropics-for Arizona. She (& I) keep the cats indoors. :)
Birders are very protective, & birds certainly need protection. The whip-poor-wills & Bob Whites! are long gone from here.

Ophelia, everyone thinks if you’re going to LV it’s for gambling. I could hit the slots at the grocery store here, but if you live here, you’d better not gamble. We were at the Henderson wetlands and ran into a local birder. He led us to “his” owl. Birders are nice if crazy people. He had spent a long time looking for a summer tanager - a different one - and my husband was able to help him. The pictured one was at the former ranch of Howard Hughes, now a state park.

Cardiff girl, thank you. I’m now seven weeks post vaccination. And I didn’t even get a blood clot! I hope everyone gets vaccinated ASAP.

Kkards, thanks! And thanks for the skort recommendation. The roadrunner was kind of ratty looking compared to what I’ve seen before. The summer tanager was gorgeous. We also saw orioles, warblers, and on and on. But most of them flitted around too fast, or were hidden by leaves. I forgot to post any of my pictures of shore birds. My husband is an expert by virtue of going out every day for four to five hours, practicing and practicing and practicing. His pictures are much better.

Joy, thank you. That was my first yellow headed blackbird this year. Thanks for the hummingbird info. They’re different there than here, but also so many more! A fanny pack is a good idea. I don’t know why I didn’t think of one.

Angie, thank you. My husband is having a great retirement. He really does go out every day for hours. In our drive down there, we saw people without masks, wearing them improperly, etc. I don’t what they think, if anything.

Slim Cat, thank you. I personally prefer cool weather. If I lived in LV, I would have to be above 7000 feet in elevation, which is in the Mt Charleston area. The first day we went up there and it was 62F in the afternoon. The next day we went up to the ski area and it was 52F!

LaP, your post this week on spring jackets was funny to me, because we go from winter to summer in a flash. Snowflakes last week, shorts and a sleeveless top today. We went to Tule Springs (Floyd Lamb) the first day, after visiting Corn Creek (Desert Nat’l Wildlife Range). The second day we went to Spring Mtn Ranch SP and there were burros braying up above the ranch house. We have wild horses, and down there they have wild burros. Burros always remind me of miners.

Fun trip! I used to spend a lot of time birdwatching at Tule Springs when DS was a baby/toddler -- nice kid-friendly trails. And I remember that fierce wind you describe; I mostly gave up on skirts and dresses because it was so much work to keep them from whipping around...

I wonder if a sling bag or fanny pack would work better than a daypack for holding holding small stuff. Fewer straps!

DS is really into gold and silver mines and wants to know why the heck we ever left Nevada; he wants to go back and tour all of the old mining towns. New Hampshire is all rock quarries, still fun but not quite as exciting. :)

Your bird watching pics are calming and a lesson in patience. Beautiful :)

What a wonderful retired life you lead!

Good job getting fully vaccinated. We are too. But still very cautious. Onward we go.

Nice bird pictures. I saw my first yellow headed blackbird this year. It was in our back yard at a sunflower seed feeder or at the suet. Blackbirds seem to like both. I suspect the hummingbird is a black chinned male. We are seeing those daily., although the broad tails are supposed to be here. Can you wear a waist bag or Fanny pack for your phone?

These picture are outstanding...that red bird -Summer tanager, is beautiful. And I’m sorry, I’ve seen the cartoons, and I don’t believe that is a roadrunner LOL

on a fashion note, give Athleta skorts a try, I’ve found that they are really good with the pocket situation

We just got back from a birding trip to the Las Vegas area. We’re both vaccinated, and we wore masks indoors. We spent very little time indoors except our hotel room. In LV, housekeeping did not enter our room for those three days. For dinner we got takeout, and ate in our room. We did not even get close to the Strip. We were in a grocery store looking for insect repellant, and one of the employees asked if we were planning to gamble. I explained that we can gamble at our grocery stores, too.

It was pretty hot, with highs in the upper 80s and mid 90s. We weren’t used to this as we hadn’t yet had any hot temperatures at home. In fact, we had had a few flakes just days before we left.

I knew it would be hot so I packed accordingly. I packed skorts, shorts, tees, and sleeveless tops. Last year I bought a few skorts for bike riding, including a wrap version from Patagonia. I also bought new sunscreen (Neutrogena spf 100). It wasn’t zinc as I prefer, but it was what I found at the last minute. I also packed a few warm items, for our last night, in an old mining town located at 6000 feet. We go through there to get to LV, and it’s always cold and windy. In our area, elevation is everything.

The first day in LV was ferociously windy. It was still quite warm, so the wind felt good. I wore the Patagonia wrap skort. It turned out to be a real nuisance in the wind. I had my camera and binoculars, and trying to use them while holding down the wrap, was impossible. I started tucking the wrap hem under. It’s a nice skort, but not in the wind. I also took a Lands End skort with faux tie dye. No wrap, no issues. I wore it the next day, which was still windy, but not like the day before. Aside from the wrap, these skorts didn’t have adequate pockets. I had a small knapsack to hold various items such as my phone. I didn’t want to fry it in the car. Wearing a knapsack is very warm. At one point, my husband carried my phone for me. I need to figure out pockets and the tangle of straps, too. BTW, the sunscreen was great - no sunburn! And we were outdoors for probably ten hours each day.

1. Patagonia Fleetwith skort
2. Lands End skort outfit, with Salomons and Tilley hat.
3. Wilson’s warbler
4. Hummingbird - not sure what kind. ETA: black chinned per Joy.
5. Summer tanager
6. Roadrunner
7. Yellow headed blackbird
8. Great horned owl

We saw lots more, but focusing on tiny birds is HARD!
