I used to be a vegan. I still don't eat most animal products (except local honey, eggs from my own chickens, and cheese made by friends), but I do wear wool and leather and down. The environmental impact of petroleum-based synthetics (especially plastic nanoparticles in waterways killing LOTS of animals) is a bigger ethical and environmental problem in my mind.

Anyway, what I wore (as a teen/young adult in Vermont):
*Bogs or Muck Boots. Super warm. I love my Muck Boots.
*thick synthetic hunting socks (usually some mix of lofty acrylic and polyester yarns)
*Polartec fleece in all its various forms. Windblock fleece is great for hats and gloves.
*Cotton hoodies. If she wants a really eco-friendly fiber, she should look at hemp -- and hemp fleece is pretty warm: http://www.consciousclothing.net/organic-fleece/
*Synthetic puffies. Look for Primaloft -- it's a high quality synthetic insulation originally developed by the US military.
*Capilene baselayers from Patagonia. Thin, warm, layer well.

I never saw thrifted animal fibers as problematic, so I had secondhand wool sweaters and such. I don't know if that's something she's open to, but I know a lot of vegans who only shop secondhand, in order to reduce consumption, and avoid giving money to companies whose ethics don't align with theirs.

Thanks for the recent insights. I believe Heattech is actually vegan now, though it may not have been in the past (milk protein in the knit!). I will tell her about the Docs as an option. She's a big fan of the Farm Sanctuary, though not sure she's seen that page.

So far, she has been getting by with leather items that she already owned for footwear. I am hoping she might take hand-me-downs from me at some point, as well.

I just realized this thread is a few months old, but in case it's still useful:

For shoes, I know Dr Martens has a vegan line and she could wear warm synthetic socks inside them. My vegan friends are mostly stuck getting their shoes from places like Payless that use synthetics to make super-cheap shoes that don't last long, but there are also better brands. I know plenty of regular hiking boots use synthetics and gore-tex. And here's the Zappos selection of vegan shoes:
http://www.zappos.com/vegan#!/.....so?t=vegan

Shopping in both Canada and the US, I used to find it challenging in stores to find wool and down coats. Often, the "wool" fabric was polyester, and the "down" coats were made of polyester fill. Parkas often lack both. I know that probably doesn't help you as far as brand names go, but Patagonia has pure poly winter wear.

Veganism is abstaining from exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. Shearing an animal to use for a coat is still exploitation and cruelty to that animal, they are birthed and raised in a confined space for the sole purpose of profit. Implying that these actions are justifiable would not be agreed upon to a vegan because we wouldn't purposefully want to inflict pain/suffering on any animal for our own selfish reasons (when we all know there are alternatives to this and it's unnecessary). That is why wool or any other animal-derived material is not vegan (to the people suggesting otherwise). Heattech from uniqlo is also not vegan. I would suggest trying this site:

http://veganoutdooradventures.com/
there is also http://www.hoodlamb.com/ and https://savetheduckusa.com/ coats.

Yes, Elizabeth, that is correct.

Some vegans (including my stepdaughter and apparently Lisa's DD) believe that using any animal product, from wool to leather to honey, is ethically wrong. Quite apart from any mistreatment that the animal may receive. Moreover, the shearing as practiced in industrialized countries is not necessarily a benign process. I won't link to anything here as it gets political but you can google it.

It's true that the whole plastic fibres thing puts those who have chosen a plant based diet for eco reasons in a terrible bind. This is probably why plant based eaters may not choose the same path -- some are choosing primarily for one reason and some for another.

My stepdaughter is also vegan. Is it a coincidence that she moved to Spain this summer?? I think not. She simply cannot tolerate the cold.

However, while she was living here, I strongly encouraged her to get some thermal underwear. What can I say? She is young. She is not sporty. The idea of thermals had never crossed her mind, not for regular wear. She looked at me as if I were insane.

However, during the polar vortex, I got well and truly sick of her complaining. So, I went out and bought a bunch of thermals for her and because things had become intolerable and she could not crank the heat high enough even indoors, she finally put it on. Wonder of wonders -- for the first time in 5 years she could stand to be outdoors for longer than 10 seconds!! It truly helped. I got the stuff from MEC (similar to your REI) and chose the warmest option.

Puffer coats are definitely do-able without down and sometimes even warmer than down options. If she has an insulating layer underneath that also helps.

Sweaters in cotton are soft but generally not super warm and if heavier they can droop and stretch easily. Acrylic can be warm (even hideously so, because non-breathable) but it pills and is static prone. My stepdaughter did rely on it. She also wore a lot of layers -- a jacket over a poly shirt over a thermal tee...I think your daughter is simply going to have to embrace maximalism in her winter style. It doesn't have to be visible maximalism (maybe) but she will absolutely need layers to stay warm in NH.

Footwear is probably the trickiest area. Again, you'll need to look for highly insulating synthetic socks and they'll need to be wicking in some way because rubber and plastic boots are not as warm. Goretex might help, or those Bogs boots that have insulation in them.

Handwarmers might also be a good idea. Also, ear muffs.

Good luck. It's not easy watching them freeze.

In the great white north here! Acrylic wool sweaters and fleece jackets are widely available and warm if she layers. I have not worn my cashmeres in a few years because my LO is a stain magnet and I haven't time for handwashing. In terms of winter jackets, there are now warm synthetic down puffers being made. Look for materials like Primaloft and Thermatec. I have a Thermatec puffer from Laundry By Design and it feels just as warm as my down-filled ones. Make sure the hood is warm too, it really makes a difference.

And +1 about having insulated winter boots.

My daughter decided to be vegan this summer, and I'm worried that she will be cold this winter, without wool, cashmere, silk and leather. She said she wasn't going to waste things she already owned, but did not want to purchase anything else that was animal-based.

If any of you cold climate vegans out there have recommendations for staying warm (in New Hampshire) I will be glad to hear them and have some choices to offer. She's 17 and very minimalist in her style choices.
