We're taking the train from Vancouver to Seattle on Saturday and should get to Seattle in the mid-afternoon. I would definitely be up for drinks/treats before the party on Saturday night. I love this party and it's always a good time but the food is consistently awful. I think I'm going to give up this year and just get something to eat beforehand so I'm not hungry and cranky about the bad food. I'm not a picky eater either so the food has to be pretty bad for me to complain.

@Sara L - yes it is! I’m still scoping out what my situation will be like (visiting Dad who is doing poorly) but I know I will want a break and to spend some time in downtown Seattle! Maybe brunch, or coffee and a treat on Saturday? Any other Seattle fabbers game? I think we will just miss Anchie (early November).

Thanks Sal and Suz for your suggestions. I had to laugh about your comment about people complaining about transit in Vancouver. Since transit barely exists in my city (you're kind of screwed if you can't drive), I definitely won't be complaining about any halfway decent transit system. A day pass sounds perfect.

I didn't realize it was Canadian Thanksgiving. That's good to know. I would love to get together, but understand if that's too difficult with it being a holiday weekend.

Runcarla - We'll only be in Seattle on Saturday October 12 and then we're flying out on Sunday, the 13th. Is that in your timeframe?

What a fun employee trip, Sara! Lucky you!

I'm in Vancouver, yes, and there are also other Fabbers lurking here! PM me and we'll see if we can swing a meet up. Warning: it's the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend so it might be tricky to work around people's family plans. It might also be unusually busy (or exceptionally quiet...) at restaurants, etc. (It all depends...) Either way, you'll have lots of fun here and your US dollars will go far.

I never notice the lack of Uber. We're a one-car family and I walk or take transit everywhere. Mr. Suz and I actually had some trouble figuring out Uber in Seattle and had to rely on US friends to help us out in that department. :)

You can buy a day pass for the transit and hop on and off. Transit is safe and runs often and takes you everywhere you want to go. People here complain about it but I think it's remarkably good. You can buy a Day Pass and get unlimited travel. https://www.translink.ca/Fares.....icing.aspx. There are also maps of the system and people will help you out if you ask.

Re sightseeing: Sally makes good points. Stanley Park is gorgeous and will be especially pretty if the sun is shining. It's great to walk or bike around the sea wall. If you can, pop into the bar of the Sylvia Hotel and have a drink. It's a lovely spot. I also love Granville Island (fun artists' studios, market, restaurants).

Gastown is actually a hip and happening place now with some of the city's best shopping, as well as galleries, etc. But it does border the downtown eastside and that is Canada's toughest, saddest neighbourhood. You don't want to go to the downtown eastside at night on your own. (Although I have in fact walked around there at night on my own and right now I teach a night class right on the border of the area and so regularly wait for the bus there.) Truthfully it is not so dangerous; people rarely harass you -- they are just trying to get by -- but it's painful to witness and can be a bit scary, in that you can't always predict how addicts will act.

Other good areas for shopping/ window shopping: Robson Street and the Pacific Centre, 4th Avenue, Main Street for funky shops and lots of thrift type stores.

Look for a chain of consignment stores called Turnabout -- they have several branches in the city and often offer good stuff. Fab shoes at Fluevog (a couple of locations) and Gravity Pope on 4th.

Vancouver Art Gallery is decent and a nice building but they are renovating so I'm not sure what's open now there. There's always music, theatre, etc. happening and October is the start of the season.

Food is amazing in Vancouver -- you really can't go wrong if you look up a few reviews.

Hope you have a wonderful trip and with luck we can meet up!

I loved Stanley Park for a bike ride or walk (we swam but it was summer). We also walked around the harbour and looked at the float planes in action.

We did head to the Gaslight district and at the time I was a little shocked at the homeless and open drug use in the alleys on the walk there. Since then we also have developed a homeless issue in NZ so I am more used to it sadly. But this was 10 yrs ago and areas come and go in popularity.

We were travelling with a 3 and 6 year old so not a lot of shopping happened....

I'm going to be in Vancouver for a short trip in October. We fly in around 11 am on Thursday, October 10 and we're leaving around noon on Saturday, October 12. My company has an employee appreciation party in October in Seattle every year. This year, instead of going to Seattle, we decided to fly into Vancouver for a couple extra days, and then we'll take the train to Seattle on Saturday afternoon to go to the party.

Are there any fabbers in Vancouver that want to get together for a meal sometime in that time frame? Any recommendations on must-see's in Vancouver? Also, is there really no ride-sharing in Vancouver? No Lyft or Uber? I think I've forgotten how to travel without Uber. :)

Thanks in advance!
