I've had this Shark vacuum for a year now and it works great. Plus when you buy it at BB&B, you can use those coupons that they are constantly mailing. Just make sure that when you clean the canister, you also open the top door and dump out what accumulates there.

I have both a Dyson (yes, it is a bit heavy) and a Roomba. The dyson is very good for suction but the Roomba cleans while I am away and then parks himself back on the charger to prepare for the next outing. I named him Hymit (Get Smart).

I actually just bought a vacuum from a used vacuum cleaner store - didn't want to pay huge money. I needed one that could work on both my hardwood floors and the carpet I have downstairs. The lady at the store, who was ridiculously knowledgeable about vacuums, does not recommend the bagless ones. She said they have nowhere near the suction of the bag version and have more issues with "kick back" where what you've sucked up comes back out again.

I ended up purchasing a Samsung Quick Jet - does all my different floor heights and has a hose attached that pops out with an attachment for tight corners, etc. It's an upright and very light, which was important for me for when I'm dragging it up and down the stairs. I'm really happy with it. Brand new, they are only around $200 (here anyway).

Raisin, the handheld Dyson I have is a weaker predecessor of the slims, I think (DC31 vs DC35 and DC44). I love it for quick pick ups. It's not as useful for longer jobs, since its running time is only 6 minutes. I see that the slims have a much longer running time, but it's still not the same as having a plug-in vacuum. Then again, I tend to be very obsessive with vacuuming, and my sessions can last 45 minutes to an hour.

Another problem is that because of its shape, it is not very maneuverable for tight spots. I imagine this problem would be even worse with the slim models that have those long arm attachments. Vacuums that have a flexible hose are much better for reaching those spots behind radiators, behind furniture, etc. Also, those suckers are fairly heavy and might not be ideal for people with weak wrists.

Our little handheld works great on hardwood floors, rugs, and carpeting. I would heartily recommend it as a second vacuum, but not as a primary one, especially if you have a large house.

Does anyone have the Dyson digital Slim? I sort of want one to replace my old vacuum, but wonder how good it is? We have carpet just in the kids bedrooms and one runner. Is it good for hardwood too?

Sorry MaryK, I shouldn't hijack your thread....

FWIW I had a Bissel for a long time and it worked very well!

Sorry, can't recommend anything inexpensive, but I have a four-year-old Dyson Animal that is my favorite thing to use of all time. With what until recently was two cats and a dog, and now just one cat and a dog, it gets used almost daily. It picks up things that I didn't even know were there, and is very easy to empty and maintain. No bags ever!

Since you don't have pets, you would probably need a different, lighter and less expensive model, but I can't recommend Dyson enough! I also have a handheld Dyson that gets used multiple times a day.

I bought my parents one of those Dysons with the multiple suction points and the hurricane inside. They didn't like it and said it was too heavy, and never used it and put it in storage - so I don't recommend one of those.

I use a little Kenmore I picked up at Canadian Tire. It's separate (not an all in one) so it's lighter for me to use; it's no hassle to carry around and it's fairly light - I don't know the model. It -does- have a bag, though. It's purple :p I think it's the only separate one that they sell.

Hey, ladies! I've decided the weekly cleaning lady is a luxury for which my single-girl budget doesn't have room, so I am in the market for a vacuum cleaner for the Bachelorette Pad. I don't want to spend a lot of money and I don't have a lot of room for storage. Any recommendations for lightweight (I need to be able to carry it up the spiral staircase), inexpensive, preferably bagless vacuum cleaners that actually do the job?

Thanks!!
