You're so right, Lisa! I always marvel at the wealth of material on the blog. I tend toward the dressier end of the spectrum myself, and I find I get inspired just by reading about many of the formulas. The archives are also solid gold for latish trend adopters like me...a post that may not make an impact when it's first written all of a sudden becomes indispensible once the penny finally drops and I find myself wanting to expand my style envelope.
Good luck with your new business venture and I'm looking forward to watching this next phase of your style journey.
Your reply

sharan - my thought process exactly; but while perusing, I realized that there are a lot of looks that can be built around a flared pant, which is a style I like. Not just bootcut, but a real flare, with fitted thighs. And pencil skirts in any iteration - lots to build on there. And when I actually clicked on the old links to specific items out of curiosity, most were no longer available, but suggestions were recommended to check out. And so much of the older blog posts done by Angie are still SO relevant ! I'm such a consumer of visuals - literally just drinking them in but often too quickly. Going back is such a good exercise.

Lisa thanks for sharing and looking forward to tagging along as you process all of this. I find little on the blogosphere that truly inspires me in the sense of being able to translate it into my day to day life, that is were YLF is so different. I always share YLF with women I meet, but sometimes I do just want to keep it all to myself.

dimity - I think you hit the nail on the head. Street style bloggers and photos - everyone in ripped jeans and high tops, etc - with luxe accessories and all of a sudden, there's a look! I bought it hook, line and sinker- and it's still great for my casual looks, but not the way I want to look for work.

I am starting a new side to my business in January, and it's fueling this new passion for dressed up looks.

Great goals, Lisa, and it's neat to hear how much the blog posts have energized you. I often look back for outfit ideas, and then I wonder about trying to emulate a look from a few years ago. I really need to get over that fear, don't you think? How many people would look at me and think, "oh, that's so 2011!" Especially since I don't faithfully copy looks anyway; who ever has the right pieces for an entire look that is featured? It's the inspiration that counts, I guess is what I'm trying to say.

Is it because of the rise of street style blogging that everything became so casual? I tend naturally toward more polished looks and feel clumsy in casual yet I look out of place when I wear anything other than casual clothes in my current life. So I look forward to seeing how you solve this dilemma.

It was some of the capsule posts that drew me in to YLF as well, earlier this year. I love ideas that are creative and practical yet not the typical formulaic set of three tops, three bottoms, one scarf ... or whatever the magic solution of the day is. I believe that people come to YLF and stay because Angie and everyone else here stimulate thoughtfulness and creativity of style, with respect for differences of taste and without strict recipes.

We already know you have a great sense of style, Lisa. But I'm looking forward to seeing you take your game in new directions.

suz - i'm kind of laughing at your last sentence. I'm not sure what a new bad is, but I want one

I will say that I find the blog and forum skews heavily to a more casual style of dress - and I do miss seeing more , well not "formal" , but polished professional looks. I know that fluidity and knits - the two big style shifts of late - lend themselves to a less formal overall look, but I'm a lover of dressing up and really miss that in myself, and in others. It became easier in recent years to adopt a more casual look because there is a lot more out there to choose from. Plus, the casual looks are where the newness often is, and I'm always drawn to what is new and what is hot. I'm going to figure this out for myself - it should be fun !

This is actually how I discovered YLF -- through the blog archives. I must have read 40 posts or more before I realized that (DUH) the blog was still active, AND that there was a lively forum community.

That, I simply watched for a while without really understanding -- meanwhile reading back in the archives still more. And finally I took the leap and joined the forum.

I couldn't agree more about those capsule and ensemble posts. For your casual days, the MOTG ones are also good.

It sounds as if you've set yourself an excellent standard for the new year. Sometimes we just fall into patterns by default and then they turn out to be depressing to us over time. That's why Una's 5 silhouette challenge has been useful to me -- it has jolted me out of my fallback habits. Hurray for looking polished and professional!! And yay to a new bad, too, if you can swing it!

HOW NICE. Lisa, you rock. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and being supportive of YLF in this way. I appreciate your kind words enormously.

Let your wise words guide you through 2015, for they are an excellent bench for your style:

"....have decided to ramp up my game again and dress for work in the manner that makes me feel the best: polished, current (if not a bit fashion forward ) and dressed in tailored, quality clothes. I work best and feel more motivated and energized when I'm pleased with my clothes, and when I know I look sharp and well put-together. No more jeans and casual sweaters. Bring back thoughtful accessorizing with jewellery and a great bag.".

I will hold you to this.

I will do more capsule posts in 2015 - they are extremely time consuming so that's why they are few and far between. But they DO go down well.

YES. Trends are no longer fads, but tend to stitch around for at least 5 years. Some stick around for 10, or longer.

And we loved the Good Wife too. Nobody wears a skirt suit like Alecia Florrick.

I love this! I do this all the time and thoroughly enjoy it. There is so much creativity here and I would never think up the different combos that other people come up with.

I also google things like 'denim jacket outfits' and look at the images that come up to see what inspiration I can get. I have several outfits just waiting for the right weather that I've got in mind from both these sources.

I too have the same dilemma about not seeing many other women except for in shops. At uni, most women are pretty young and I'm not into emulating their looks, and then otherwise I'm at the library or supermarket or home. That's why I love it here!

After a month of non-stop spending on gifts, food, wine and other goodies, if I never have to spend another cent, I'd be quite happy. 3 more months of winter to deal with and I'd like to use what I have if I can, and be ready for spending on spring clothes , where I'll need a fair bit.

Over the past year or more, I fell into a rather relaxed and definitely more casual style of dressing for work. I'm not happy about that and after pondering all things style and wardrobe related for some months now, have decided to ramp up my game again and dress for work in the manner that makes me feel the best: polished, current (if not a bit fashion forward ) and dressed in tailored, quality clothes. I work best and feel more motivated and energized when I'm pleased with my clothes, and when I know I look sharp and well put-together. No more jeans and casual sweaters. Bring back thoughtful accessorizing with jewellery and a great bag. Snap out of it, Lisa!

Not working in an office and seeing other professional women means I don't get a sense of what other women are wearing to work these days. The only women I see are those working in retail, and that's not really an accurate representation of the professional population at large. I get all of my clothing ideas and opinions on style from magazines, and I'm always disappointed that most women with average incomes don't dress like that. I want to, because I absolutely don't want to dress like a "stuck" middle aged woman, but don't have access to the brands, stores and large assortments that are in the larger cities. I've been scouring the internet looking for blogs with ideas for what someone like me can wear to work - and not really finding much. So I went back to the archives on YLF - and went through the past few years of ensembles and trends.

Wow! What a great visual treat to look at them all together like that . You can quickly skip past the categories and looks that aren't relevant, and begin to put together a picture of what a working wardrobe can look like. Even ensembles styled and posted a couple of years back still look good - and the ideas are easily translated to newer pieces. My favourites are the capsule posts - which are too few and far between for my liking Love them! It was also a valuable exercise in being reminded that many, many silhouettes and styles stay very current for more than a couple of seasons.

So I encourage anyone stumped by what to do with their closet at hand, mystified by what works well with what , and needs a proverbial kick in the pants to bring up their professional dressing game to go back through the archives. Sit down with a glass of wine, get comfy and have a great time. I know I did- and even pinned some new ideas onto my boards. Angie has produced a wealth of valuable information and ideas, and it's all there for our use.

p.s. can you tell I've been binge watching The Good Wife? I swear that show makes me want to sit up taller and dress better. I want to dress like Alicia Florrick.
