I cooked ALL DAY yesterday (I had my daughter and hubby to help, thank goodness) and we had a great meal. Hubby did the turkey on the rotisserie outside and it was fantastic! We also did stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and corn with almonds, cranberry sauce (Hubby insists on the kind from a can), mac n cheese, and homemade chocolate pie. My favorite new addition to the meal was Mr. Fruit Turkey, who did double duty as a light appetizer platter!

What an amazing project! We met our holiday assignments by bringing sherry roasted root vegetables and a rather rustic looking fresh fig galette.

Cake looks yummy!
Yesterday we went to mom's- was just her, me, DH, and one of her neighbors. She made dal (lentils), rice, and pumpkin and veggie samosas (from Trader Joes). Pumpkin pie and lemon cream pie for dessert- I just had the lemon. None of the traditional foods appeal to me at all, so we do other types of things!

We're also going with FIL to an Irish restaurant. Not much vegetarian there for me to eat, but he likes it.

We’re going to my cousin’s today, for
Thanksgiving lunch. However, we like our own cooking better, lol. We’re so bad. My mum made pumpkin pies yesterday and I did the turkey and sweet potatoes. I’ll do the stuffing and veg when we come back. Lol

I have been cooking off and on for days. I was held up a bit by an illness and a family member's medical procedure, but I have made and frozen an apple pie, a pumpkin pie, and two cream pies. I also made and froze the sweet potato casserole. Today, I made the jello salad (I don't understand the attraction, but it is a must-have for Dh) and cranberry orange muffins. The muffins are a Thanksgiving morning tradition, and are my second son's favorite part of Thanksgiving.

I also diced all the veggies for the stuffing, so in the morning, I will just have to put the stuffing together, and get the turkey in the oven. I would love to be able to make mashed potatoes in advance, but something about the taste changes when they're made and refrigerated, so I always have to make them on Thanksgiving so they are fresh.

On the menu are all the usual suspects: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potato casserole, cauliflower casserole, dinner rolls, cranberry sauce, jello salad, relish tray (green and black olives, several varieties of pickles), apple pie, pumpkin pie, cranberry orange muffins, chocolate-banana cream pie, and wine. We have always had sprakling grape juice for the kids, and my 21 year old son and 19 year old daughter still prefer it to anything else. Dh and I will have a wine we brought back from South Dakota when we went to see the bison round-up, and we brought a honey mead for our 23 year old son (he is a big mead fan, likely due to his interest in RPGs).

Thanks for concern for my Ben - I haven't seen him yet today, but he's better. It's pretty unusual for a 25 yr old to get pneumonia and he responded immediately to the antibiotic. Remains to be seen if there will be lingering side effects.

@ket and @indigoprint - it's very cool that you are familiar with Marcel and Death by Chocolate! He was quite ahead of his time. He was one of the first chefs to do a cooking show on TV. While dashingly handsome on camera, he was a bit wooden in his delivery as I recall. I think he was also a trailblazer in publishing the cookbooks affiliated with the restaurant.

It was such an interesting choice to put a "nouvelle cuisine" restaurant in Colonial Williamsburg back in 1981.I always say that I learned more useful knowledge at the Trellis than I did at The College of William & Mary, and it has served me in my whole life. Service was impeccable. We had to recite the daily menu, so we tasted everything that came out of the kitchen, and knew the ingredients. Wine pairing was important and we had employee wine tastings monthly. Learned to properly open a bottle of wine at the age of 19! The Trellis hosted numerous students on internships from the Culinary Institute of America. There were strict rules about polite behavior in Marcel's kitchen, which was compact. Please, thank you, excuse me. Hushed tones. The only one who ever raised his voice, or lost it, was Marcel on busy Saturday nights when we "waitrons" were lined up out the kitchen door to pick up.

There was a daily cheesecake, and they were 6 inches tall and very light. Not your average New York cheesecake. The flavors were incorporated into the batter, never on top.
My 28 yr old son went to W&M as well. For 4 years he worked at the establishments of the co-owner of the Trellis who had gone on, with his son who was a busboy when I was a waitress and is now a chef, to open an even better restaurant across the square in 2003. If you are ever in Williamsburg, I highly recommend The Fat Canary for a fine dining experience. For a great sandwich, visit the Cheese Shop which is next door and of the same family.
Very, very fond memories of that time. Thanks for indulging me!

Hope DS is well on the mend. Sorry he was so ill. Sending healing thoughts, sweet Laurie.

Loved the story, and go Team Hard Top Cake Carrier! :)

Your baked beauties look delicious! WOW. I'm sure they'll go down well.

We do not host Thanksgiving (we are not American, so the tradition is not natural for us). We are always invited by American friends, though! Going on 17 years with the same friends! I make the sides and bring chocolate dairy-free cookies for the host.

My sides this year are:

cauliflower and potato mash

honey garlic ginger carrots

coconut brussel sprouts

The host is making fried chicken instead of turkey this year. Fab to change things up.

I'll add that I LOVE the long Thanksgiving weekend here in the US. It kicks off the festive season and we put up our decorations. Adore this time of year!

Definitely! Starting my meatballs today, so they’re oven-ready tomorrow. And probably the apple cake too. Tomorrow I’ll make the potatoes and gravy, so nothing separates or is weird.

Your meal sounds epic! Serious cheesecake lover here. And…I know of Marcel. It’s been so long since I heard his name come up in food circles. I’ll definitely be trying his recipe! Thank you so kindly for sharing the link <3

So sorry about your son! I pray he mends soon! I’m glad he can join after all.

Yes! I enjoy cooking Thanksgiving dinner and would prepare it if it were only my husband and me.(smaller scale but still with leftovers). 2 of my adult children will be present.
I have very fond memories of my grandmother and her sister hosting large dinners (30 or so people) when I was younger than 10. I specifically remember the age as there was a "grownup" table and a "little kid" table and it was quite the honor when you were able to join the elders. They were large and noisy gatherings with some relatives I only saw on those occasions.

I good friend of mine had Death by Chocolate. I still have a recipe she shared with me from it 30 years ago. So Fab that you worked with the author. I remember it being a popular book.

Just me and DH but this year it is difficult for me to do much cooking, so we’ve ordered some things from a favorite restaurant: pot pies, sweet potatoes (plain baked), roasted sprouts with balsamic. I will make the cranberry sauce tomorrow. Cranberries, orange juice, and maple syrup - boiled for 10 minutes.

Dessert will be individual pecan and pumpkin pies, also ordered.

I am grateful for the convenience of ordering, but I do miss the shopping, planning and cooking. Not the cleaning though!!

And DH will enjoy his Dallas Cowboys game!

Got my Thanksgiving prep started today...anyone else into it? I almost escaped cooking this year until my younger son, who was supposed to be out of the country with work over the holiday but came down with bacterial pneumonia last week (seriously. it was not good) and could not travel, announced he and his current girlfriend would be coming in. So just 4 of us, but now all the things to prep.

I have taken on the Trellis Chocolate & Pumpkin cheesecake this year, which we will take to the neighbors' to share dessert. In years past I have done portions of this recipe, but this year I'm doing the whole thing. It is 4 recipes - chocolate cookies for the crust, pumpkin cheesecake, chocolate cheesecake, and chocolate ganache. It is in the cookbook Death by Chocolate written by Marcel Desaulniers, the chef at the Trellis in Williamsburg, VA, a restaurant I worked in during college in the mid-80's! A nice blogger published the recipe!

The first time I made this thing, my kids were young. We drove from DC to a ski resort in WV to meet up with my family for the holiday, and I had the cake between the front seats of the minivan. When we stopped at a rest stop, my younger son - maybe 6 at the time - came bounding forward from the back seat and stepped right on the cake. Needless to say, I was beside myself! One of my Christmas gifts that year was a hard-topped cake carrier...

The cheesecakes are in the oven. It smells heavenly.
(Day 3- pic of my finished product - I am always amazed by ganache and how easy it is to make and work with).
