This was a joy to read. I am looking forward to your posts on silhouette as I have been experimenting with those that do not define the waist, and have found that a long top can be too long on a short person. I also run cold and the daily weather pattern of cool/cold mornings, hot sun at mid day and a rapid cooling off again means every outfit needs a topper or else I need to change during the day.
I am with you on grooming and also high fiving Angie on naked skin and emphasis on eyes.

Looking forward to your next posts. Your fit-and-flare dresses are always flattering, and the ones that you style with a belt at the waist, I always think of as a very signature look. But, I completely understand wanting to try different silhouettes. I've added a few architectural pieces. They don't photograph well, but are so much fun to wear. And, I don't worry about the figure flattery, though at one point, Angie wrote that these types of pieces are best if they "fit somewhere," so I keep that in mind- volume but still playing with some defined structure. Good luck!

Yes! Nodding with everything, although we have very different body shapes. The beach color palette was a stroke of brilliance and I often think about it when I contemplate mixing cool and warm tones.
Hair and other grooming appointments seem like such luxuries now. The pandemic was a true lesson in gratitude.
Am eager to see you unveil your silhouettes. I have been thinking along those lines also lately.

Thanks all for your feedback! Angie thank you for your thoughts - I like the prices you have outlined!

Angie and FI - you are exactly right - I need to specify my figure flattery priorities. I will mull them over and then write about them in my next post.

Anchie - I am following along with you closely! I have the same problem, but the opposite way. I have gained some weight and muscle in COVID so things are but fitting me the same. This will be a good exercise to weed out what works and what doesn't anymore.

One note of caution, at least for me, this 15 months of virtual isolation, has narrowed my eye and made it harder to judge new silhouettes. So i would say, go slow, try something and be open to trying it again later. Of course, YMMV, and maybe after 15 months of sameness you’re eye is ready for something new

Cataloguing your wardrobe for Finds is a JOB(!) but the project can keep you busy and out of the shops! (My entire wardrobe - sans fitness kit - was a winter holiday project) If it seems like an insurmountable project, break it up into capsules - either seasonal items, colour capsules, or category (pants, shorts, skirts, etc.)

So you want to keep both the silhouettes of the landscape outfit and Max Mara dress? What are the “ figure flattery priorities” you refer to in #3? From those two outfits, I’d guess that your priorities change situationally.

Hello, Roxanna! NICE to hear things are "normalizing" in your neck of the woods.

I am soooo impressed with how well you managed your hair sans cut for a year. It always looks luscious and gorgeous. Gold hair medal for you, and you have stunning hair :)

SOOOO with you and LisaP on the "grooming and polished" part. I pander to this need daily and no exceptions - only when we couldn't get haircuts in strict lockdown did my hair look dodgy. I have though given up on tinted moisturizer and lipstick, and I LOVE those naked changes, (and so does hubs Greg, who much prefers it). I sport naked and well moisturized skin, and shiny lip balm instead. I continue to be addicted to mascara and tightline. I highlight my eyes and not my lips.

And what Suz said.

The best way for us to help you with new outfit proportions, silhouette remixing, and outfit creation sessions is to have your wardrobe represented in FINDS. As we do the exercise, you try on outfits suggested, and we support and troubleshoot. The missing "glue pieces" will present themselves through the process too. (This is how I work with my clients).

ETA: sharing your figure flattering priorities is key too.

@FI -Sorry, I should have been clearer. Where I want to go is more of a wardrobe evolution than a style evolution. Thanks for pointing out those two silhouettes - I like them both too I think they both have room in my wardrobe and style, and I don't plan on changing that - I just want to identify the silhouettes I like best and then the pieces that fit into each, do I have an easier time making outfits of my clothes.

You all know me so well!

@Suz, @Lisa, @Carla - you are right, fit and flare is a go to silhouette for me and one I will for sure have in my lineup. As @Suntiger pointed out, some silhouettes work better for some seasons - and fit and flare is an easy go to summer look for me.

@Lisa - I hadn’t thought about it looking more authoritative - interesting perspective and I can see why you say that! It is a go to for both work and casual.

@Carla I hadn’t thought about #2 but you are right, that is a silhouette I wear a lot at work because I have a lot of cropped tailored pants for work. Thank you for the insight - this will come in handy again in September when I start going back!

As @Suz and @cat2 said, it’s good to do a try on session too - which I will. But I will likely choose a silhouette a week and then try on outfits that work in that silhouette. That way it makes the abstract concrete, and makes it more manageable.

@Irina and @Rachy, I think we are so a bit all over the place this summer as we try to adjust to a new way of working and living, in pandemic recovery. It’s going to take a while to get our feet under us, I think.

Bijou, your posts have been such an inspiration to me! I love how you play with silhouettes and will definitely be using you for inspiration as I develop mine…

You’ve identified a very tangible methodology. It’s interesting, I think I start with style before silhouette… but now I’m considering how much silhouettes belong to various styles. In any case, I’m short waisted… I tend towards things that blow past my waist or sit as low as possible…

There are two silhouettes that I see as very distinctive to your style and flattering in completely different ways. #1 is the fit and flair below the knee dress and #2 is what I call the ice cream cone - cropped tapered leg pants with a cropped, boxy topper, over any variety of interesting tops. Both styles work with your body shape and extend the waist to floor/leg line - even if you’re not doing a high heel. Your palette is sublime with your colouring - so please keep it! I’m curious to see what you do with your hair!

I tossed out every faded garment in my closet (except jeans) this week, so I’m left with things that are saturated and crisp (and feel new, even if they aren’t.) I feel like my footwear needs an overhaul as well. It’s the one part of my closet that was really neglected during the past 16 months.

I get it . I went through this stage too , but it was spurred on by my retirement from sales and a move to a completely different life /work style . I was pretty ruthless with my collection of clothes and footwear and finally feel like it’s ina decent place . It’s funny , you and I could not be more different in skin tone but we like similar colour palettes . I’ve always loved the Autumn at the Beach moniker I’ve noticed your interest in different silhouettes lately and I think your experiments have been great . I still think of you looking so good in more fitted and tailored silhouettes up top though , because they really flatter your small waist and delicate shoulder/ neckline . That kind of look is also great for professional wear because it gives you the authority and weight your job requires . Where am I going with this ? I’m not sure - lol. You could go all arty with less structured tops and jackets , because it plays well off of your hair and eyebrows , but maybe reign in the bottom half when you’re doing that ?

I’m SO with you on the grooming part . I’ve learned to let a lot go over the last 15 months ( in terms of my expectations for perfect hair and nails ) but I’m not ready to abandon that structured and polished look you describe .

Roxanna, some excellent reflections. I am with you on the grooming. Can't wait until this is a more regular and reliable part of our lives again!

In terms of silhouettes for you, it would be a bit easier to talk about specific wardrobe items if you had them in Finds, but I recall some easy A-line dresses (simple, casual) that work well for you -- I don't know if those also work (or if you have similar pieces) for your work wardrobe. But that's one option -- fitted waist, easy and flowy below, with a cropped topper for possible AC?

A try on session with some of your favourite summer pieces sounds like a good idea at this point, too. And maybe trying on the things you haven't been wearing to identify precisely why. Yes, you don't have the support act. But what *is* that support act? You can ask us here.

I barely shopped at all in the past year but still ended up spending money -- because I bought a lot of gear clothing! And footwear, which I wore out even faster than usual.

In terms of silhouettes for myself, I'm feeling a bit of a style shift or maybe a simplification -- I seem, for the moment, to be "over" many of my wide legs. I just don't reach for them. Ditto the higher high waists -- I'd way rather be wearing a less fashionable mid-rise. {scratches head}

I am not very good at envisioning how things go together and so with my work clothes will literally throw everything that is in season onto the bed, and spend a morning grouping the pile into as many outfits as I can. I then hang the outfits together and each morning give one a spin. This process helps me understand what I have first, before buying anything else. It also gets me focused on the actual gaps that are keeping me from using some pieces, things like not having the right color cami or needing a different shoe to tie things together. I would suggest hanging and trying on actual outfits rather than anything more abstract.

Hello all,

Just popping in to say hi and give a little update. Toronto is finally opening up a little more and I will soon be going on more outings and then back to work in September. I am excited!

I have spent most of this past year and a half in loungewear, which worked well for my WFH life and I was happy to wear it. though I think I have managed fairly well through the challenges of the pandemic, one of my vices was online shopping, and I have collected quite a bit.

I like my wardrobe and the pieces I have purchased a lot - but moving forward, I’d like to buy less and use what I have more. After doing some reflection, I’d like to move forward with a few principles:

1) after a whole year without a haircut (and growing out an asymmetrical cut TWICE!) - grooming is my top priority. I need to look polished and neat at all times to feel like me- which to me means a haircut that gives me structure (I’m choosing structured and polished over edgy this time) and well groomed brows (thank God salons are reopening - I’ve felt so schleppy for 18 months doing my own brows!)

2) I love my tight color palette. Over the last couple of years, I have developed a palette I call “Autumn on the Beach”, which I adore and feels intuitive and unique to me. It consists of Pastels, earth tones and neutrals that I mix together in many different ways. I know exactly which tones and colors fall into this palette when I see them, and I have to stick to this, as I feel best in these colors, colour mixing them feels intuitive and easy even though they are unusual combinations, and it helps me create some boundaries around what I buy.)

3) I need some help with proportions/silhouettes. I realize that this is where I am falling down. Creating silhouettes that work for my style, my body and my figure flattery priorities is key. I have not been doing this, which means I am struggling to find outfits that flatter even with a wardrobe full of wonderful pieces. And it means that I am not wearing pieces I love simply because I haven’t been able to incorporate them into a silhouette yet - so I buy them, I try them, then they sit there while I move on to the next shiny thing.

Also, I have been experimenting with silhouettes these days and pushing the bounds of figure flattery, which I rather like. But I need to identify what works to my eye and what doesn’t.

I realized that I wear a couple of key silhouettes by season, and they always include a topper and often even a shawl/scarf because I run cold.

But I am a petite curvy hourglass with sloping shoulders, a short torso, high hips and average neck - lots of layers often overwhelm me and don’t give me the clean, urban, sophisticated look I am after. And - KEY - boxy avant garde straight pieces that look great on models with long torsos and broad shoulders look very different on me! Somehow I have a hard time remembering that.

Task 1: come up with 2-3 silhouettes to wear over the summer months, and the pieces that fall into them. Challenge myself to incorporate items I own that I haven’t been able to put into silhouettes, so that I can start wearing them. Identify even the minute details of what pieces work in what combinations and why - so that I can refrain from buying pieces that don’t work for me in the future.

Phew! If you’ve made it this far, thank you my next post will be about Silhouette #1 and the pieces I am using to bring it to life. I am using this forum to keep me accountable!

I’m posting this all here because I would LOVE to hear your thoughts about silhouettes and how you put outfits together. I have been so inspired by all of your outfit posts and challenges lately!
