VC - So glad to hear that things are back on track for you. I recently gained weight due to a medical issue / stress. I am finally finding my footing again. YLF has been a great source of support.

All the best VC, and well done on the progress you have made. I can absolutely relate to their being a time when you slack off and nothing seems to come of it ... until suddently it does!
I hit my "emergency weight" (or top of the range, as I put it to myself) recently and am taking steps to reorient myself too.
BTW didn't you start working from home recently? - that must be an added burden in all this.

VC --

So glad you are feeling better about yourself and all the you've accomplished so far in terms of lifestyle changes!

I'm not a natural exerciser type (though I enjoy the stress-reduction aspects) nor do I have a forgiving metabolism.

I definitely go through phases where realizing my behavior drives the effects I see bums me out. I would prefer a lifetime pass of eating whatever I want and exercising never/randomly!

At those times, I really try to focus on all the good things fruits/veg + moderate daily exercise has been shown to do for one's insides. Helps me get back on track and/or see that my (hopefully long) future of making conscious choices does have an upside.

Best of luck as you continue on this journey...you have many companions!

The idea of finding a gym as you are getting utilities organized when moving is a brilliant one. I am filing that one away for future reference. Congrats on getting back on track!

Well, I'm relieved that 'simplifying' seems to be all that's needed right now. I think a few too many slightly splurge-ish dinners (while home cooked) crept in, and in the past I was a regular exerciser - and these still healthy, but slightly more-ish dinners had no negative effect.

Back when I was within sight of my overall weight loss goals, I was going to the gym five mornings a week, plus going on a good hour to two hour walk each day. Weights three times a week, "cardio" the other two mornings, plus the big walk each day. Then, life threw us a curveball - a pretty stressful one, and we moved out of state. Life was pretty topsy turvy, and lots of other things went on as well. So, I never did get my fitness routine going again, and I've been moved for over a year and a half now! A few months without exercise didn't seem to hurt, and I was too busy/stressed (insert a million other excuses). Gradually though, the non-exercise, in combination with getting "fancy" with dinners had me having to fight to just barely stay in place. I must have lost the same three or so (maybe even up to five) pounds umpteen times. I never did make any more real progress, and the latest upset was the additional six or seven mystery pounds on top of this.

If any of you move (a good distance) be sure to find a new gym ASAP - make it as important as getting your utilities set up and your household unpacked. It certainly seems the longer you go without exercise, the harder it is to get started back up again. Oh, and don't go from maintenance eating to more-ish maintenance eating at the same time as you surreptitiously slide out of your exercise routine.

christeanne - way to go! I happen to think the grocery store is an excellent place to get a lunch on the go. Thank you for sharing your experience - it makes me feel good knowing there are others here who are also getting back on track.

ManidipaM - wow - good for you that a move actually worked in your favour! Well done and thanks for pointing out that it's good to talk about this stuff and actually look at what's working and not working. Ignoring it isn't going to help. You're 100% right about this.

jayne - thanks for your post and especially for sharing that you know what this is like. It really does help. The only thing I can suggest (and I'm not always so good at remembering this in times of weight woes) is that motivation and inspiration are brought to life by taking action. Sometimes this is very hard to do, but it's amazing to me how just one day 'on track' can inspire and motivate like crazy. I mean, that first day or three - it's not like there's any noticeable result, and yet - just being back "on" is *the* thing that actually creates the motivation. I know this sounds sappy, but in some ways, you can change your whole life in just one day. It might be that those first days require a major push - it's not like you're feeling motivated or happy or excited - you might even be mad at the situation. It's a chicken and egg thing...not motivated to deal with things, but then it's the not dealing that causes the lack of said motivation. I swear - just one day (even if you have to force yourself) of being back on track is the #1 way to get your motivation back. You are creating it by taking action.

claire - thanks for the boost - so true that there's some actual momentum going, and as I was just saying to jayne, this seems to be the toughest hurdle. It's not yet a huge amount of momentum, but if I just keep going, it will grow and things will get even better as I continue to build on this 'start back.'

fashionista - thank you! I appreciate the good luck wishes

I'm "rowing" right there with you! I didn't have time today to read much on YLF but when I saw your post I had to check in.
Awesome realization VC. Simplicity and change of habits as opposed to crazy crash system. I like it

As for me, the last two weeks of eating very simply (lots of fruits and vegies and balanced protein, less meat though, more fiber) has resulted in 4 lbs lost. (avg over three days - it seems to go up and down!) I will take it! Today I was out of house and an emergency came up which meant I had to eat on the road.
I could not find anything worth breaking my good habits over! No fast food for me I ended up finding a market and bought an apple, a kind bar, some water and later had a grilled chicken wrap and asked for no cheese or dressing. I felt so good!
But need to be better prepared for next time.

Keep rowing!

Actually, I want to thank you for posting the whole thing. It is comforting to know there are others out there struggling themselves. I am right now up perhaps 3 kilos (nearly 10 lbs) from my recent lowest and seem to struggle to jog. And eating, I just don't want to bother keeping track. So now, I have you to inspire ME to get off my butt and get back in control. Thanks

Oh yay! I'm so glad to hear your out of the "OH NO, nothing fits!" zone. You're doing great and you'll get there.

Yay, VC! We're in this boat together, and we'll row, row, row till we get ashore --- but most importantly, we'll try not to kill ourselves before we arrive! No more beating yourself up.
:-)

I'm right back to the simpler eating with you. Sometimes life throws you curve balls, and sometimes there's a lifeline unexpectedly --- in the middle of a move, I suddenly don't have a kitchen and not much of a fridge in the little interim accommodation we chose. So it's plenty of walking and carrying, a lot of fruit and muesli, and a couple of very simple meals at fixed times from the dining room (mess hall), though I'll confess to a cafe treat at work. I should be less a pound at least by the end of the week, I hope --- leaving me another four to go.

Do keep us posted, Velvety --- comparing notes and making disclosures can help so much to spot what's going right and what's not, and WHY. Not to inflict blame on yourself for 'letting things slide' (who EVER says I'm going to gain 2 pounds this week but I'll go ahead and eat a burger daily anyway?!), but just so we can figure out how to work around that variable entity called 'life'.

I just wanted to sure to say thank you all so much for replying to my thread awhile back on the topic of weight and self esteem, and that I also really appreciated the chance to just sound off on the topic on a recent "Healthy Habits" thread.

Five of the ten pounds are gone I did *not* have to go to extremes or anything, I just needed to get back to simpler meals and foods. It's working, and while I'm still feeling yucky about having gained some weight back, at least it's now five pounds and not ten pounds. Even then, I still want to get to goal...but the really upsetting stuff has been the additional pounds that decided to show up.

Thank you for listening and being there. It's particularly helpful to be able to talk about this stuff with people who understand what it's like when you get to that 'emergency' (thanks MaryK for this idea) zone and clothes aren't fitting. I was getting to the point where I was going to have to go and buy some larger pants. This might not be necessary after all.

I still don't love the situation, but I know that being able to speak up here helped a whole lot and I am now on the right track.

I've learned something and it's that my 'maintenance' plan doesn't work as well if I just casually ditch the exercise.

Anyway, thanks again - I really do appreciate everyone's kindness, support and understanding.
