Peri, good points. I am no longer thinking about this in detail like I did 4 years ago but I agree with your thoughts.

Roberta, I too was very interested in the nitty gritty details but they would not tell me how they did it, so I just had to move on :-)

I remember this conversation vividly as it alarmed me. I thought of it as a cautionary tale. Looking at my purchases over the last 12 months, I have returned exactly two thirds of them. As Angie said originally, I buy a fair amount of beauty products at Nordstrom, or this percentage would be much higher. With clothing and shoes, I am always buying sizes or colors that are not available in the store, or buying multiples to compare fit, fabrics and cost. I also want to have the item at home to try out with my wardrobe at my leisure.

It seems they aren't looking at the overall cost, as the things I keep (an eye pencil, hand cream) are never as expensive as the things I return (clothes and shoes). And I never mail anything back, but instead return them to the store. I wonder if that has any impact?

Finally, my online shopping is done without any help from a sales person. I pick out my own stuff and check out myself. Someone has to pick and pack the items in some warehouse somewhere to ship them, but wouldn't they be doing that if they were stocking the actual store?

Clearly I am very interested in the nitty gritty details of their decision making process.

I know this post started years ago but it got me curious about my stats. I don't feel like I've had a successful shopping year at all, just not seeing things I like. Well, from August of 2023 to the end of July 2024 I've had a 68% return rate. The toxic chemical sweaters didn't help, and whose fault is that? Maybe I'm keeping less because quality has declined. The page didn't go back further than 8-23 but I feel like my return rate was lower in the past.

It just seems like a bizarre concept for a store to fire a customer. I wonder how long this has been a thing, and what other stores do it. I understand it's a complicated issue...there are YT people who buy gobs of clothes just to make videos on them and then return it all...but the average customer worrying about being fired seems weird. And can backfire...if I'm worried about my stats catching someone's attention I am more likely to order less instead of keep more.

molly283, EXACTLY, life goes on. For me this fits in the category of things I can't change but can change how I react to them. I've moved on!

Lisa, this post is 4 years old, and until molly283 replied to it very
recetnly I was in the FIred-By-Nord-For-To-Many-Returns club by myself as far as I knew I guess molly has now joined the club, not voluntarily I would imagine/

DonnaF your situation is fascinating. I guess you haven't hit whatever $$ amount plus % return threshold I hit. I asked them for the formula and said I'd be happy to live within it if I knew it, but they were not willing to reveal it. I'm completely over it, so don't stay annoyed on my account. :-)

Janet - your questions about how many returns got me fired are exactly what I asked them, but they would not tell me. My online ordering patterns are as you describe, two different sizes of something to find which fits, a few similar styles of shoes to see which works etc. I think that's probably the norm for most of us. The 12 month period that got me fired was mid-2019 - mid 2020 - so only 3 months or so into Covid when the full impact on retail had not hit yet. This policy was clearly in place well before Covid.

I didn't save the exact $$ amount and % returns that I tallied up 4 years ago, but it was maybe 80% returns and total spend (before returns) in the ranges that would have gotten me early access to the NAS So a LOT for sure, but I was in an experimental mood back then. I guess I really was the type of customer they don't want.

I've considered buying in-store with cash (so I could be anonymous), but the 2 Nordies near me have almost nothing that appeals. No petites, a small amount of high end stuff that won't fit me or my lifestyle, lots of pricey skinny or wide leg jeans, and shoes and bags that are never quite what I want. Online selection is a little better but I've been able to do just fine without them. Over it!

Wow, Chris! I somehow missed this whole thread when you first posted it a few years ago. Even though I’d heard of Nordstrom canceling customers for high returns, I didn’t realize you’d done all this footwork, and to no avail. Kudos to you for addressing it in such a level-headed manner.

The pandemic really hit local b&m retail hard. The nearby Nordstrom closed, and the next closest one is 45 minutes away and doesn’t have nearly the selection they used to have. Online shopping is totally a necessity if I am to shop with Nordstrom now. I pick up the packages at the Rack near me (which seems to still do a strong business), and immediately try on in store so I can process any necessary returns in the same visit. Out of curiosity, I just looked through my account app and did a quick tally — over the last year, my return rate looks to be about 70%. Considering this is doing things like ordering several pairs of silver sandals to find one pair, and ordering a skirt in two different sizes to determine which one works better, I think that is pretty good and is around the ratio I would expect. I wonder how their algorithm works for determining customer return habits that they find negative — are they solely based on $$ or do they consider broader patterns so they know whether they are alienating a customer who may be worth the bother to them in the long term. Ah, just a rhetorical musing, but at any rate, it does seem to be less than stellar customer service!

Well, Chris, Nordstrom still hasn’t fired me despite my (just guessing) 80% return rate on my Nordstrom.com shopping. I make all my returns to the store and buy nothing in person. The return associates knew me at the flagship store that closed last year. My net purchases add up to quite a bit however since I am too lazy to shop elsewhere. The alterations benefit keeps me returning since Petite sizes have grown harder to track down and styles tend to be boringly conservative, not that Nordstrom isn’t, lol.

I just find the discrepancy in our experience infuriating, at least for you. Reminds me of my and my lab partner’s physics grades in high school. Our work was identical but the teacher would always give me higher marks — simply because my standardized scores (which the teacher had no business examining) were higher than hers. The unfairness has stayed with me after 55+ years.

Hi molly283! The answer is no, they have not let me be reinstated. I have asked twice, once about a year after the initial “firing” and again a year after that. I haven't tried again. Every now and then I look at their online selection and find so little that interests me and would fit that I don’t miss them. Shoes are the one exception … I look for things I might like and most of the time can find them elsewhere.

Hi there, I realize this post was made 4 years ago, but I would very much love to know if you have been allowed to have your account reinstated after all these years? Yesterday I received the same letter as you via email. I tried calling, but it asks for me to leave a message. I hung up because I was feeling too emotional at the time. As you said in your other post, there are more important things to worry about than shopping at Nordstrom, but it's still a crummy feeling. Just hoping you can update what changed, if anything, after 4 years. Thank you!

Thanks Jules. Maybe we YLF shoppers ARE more demanding than others as you suggest. I just hate throwing money away on discretionary items that I don't like If I have to buy a new car or toaster and am not crazy about the choices, I'll pick one and live with it because it's a necessity, but a sweater that doesn't fit right and can't be altered, NOPE!

I'm sorry about your experience Chris, and you handled it beautifully.

Just musing but I think ylf shoppers might be a bit more demanding in terms of fit than most... and in terms of using any extra details provided. Many people won't read the "fine print" anyway - and those same people may also be more likely to keep stuff that isn't quite right. So from a business perspective, how much does a retailer invest in detailing 1000s of items? They are trying to satisfy some minimum number of people, a minimum amount of the time, to stay in business profitably.

Firecracker, that plan sounds good. Your comment about skin care/makeup reminded me that I need to rethink a few things I was buying at Nordstrom so thanks for that. I mostly use drugstore brands because I've tried a bunch of dept store brands and usually see no difference, but I have been buying Anastasia eyebrow pencils and Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer from Nordstrom. I was thinking I'd have to go back to Sephora which I came to dislike because their bonus points are ONLY about free samples. Turns out I can get both of them at Macys, where I already shop a lot! HAH take THAT Nordstrom

Angie - I can see how you buy enough that is not returned that you won't hit the danger zone any time soon. Also you seem to find things that fit you and your style there, and being near that huge flagship store is a plus for you too. You make an excellent point about the next generation figuring things out....that's what younger folks always do..it was us at one point...

RobinF thanks! Maybe my one voice when added to others will cause a change at Nordstrom at some point. I'm with you on petite sizing - and some things like blazers and coats are often not alterable. There are quite a few stores that carry petites, but there is just not the variety of styles.

Joy - thanks! Interesting points about what the SAs say etc...and again I don't think it matters whether you do returns in stores on via UPS/USPS, if you exceed their threshold for returns vs purchases you're in that danger zone.

Chris you did a fabulous job although it must have been exhausting. Having moved to a new area in the last few years, I found a huge difference in the Nordstrom B&M stores. Now the mall store SA’s encourage you to go order online because the store does not even carry many of the Nordstrom brands. Next time I will bring up the cost of online returns and danger of being “ fired” as a customer. I usually make returns in person at The Rack. They are glad to take them even though they are supposed to be returned at the main store.

Chris, good for you! It sounds like you handled it perfectly. I would still be a bit upset, you basically asked if you could go back to giving them some of your money and they said no. Wow.

I am also a petite and for me Nordstrom is at the top of my budget. I am not spending that for something I have to alter, even if I am able (hems are easy but things like sweaters, coats, some tops even are very difficult) and I never see petite sizes in the store. Very disappointing of them but I'm glad you got some resolution.

I buy all my undies, loungewear, some bed linen, all yoga gear, all my make-up, and some gifts for others at Nordstrom too. Plus Greg gets a third of his wardrobe from Nordies. Almost none of it is retuned. This absolutely helps balance out the clothing and footwear that I return.

I also enjoyed your your reply to Lisa P. It's a VERY complicated set of variables, where there are compromises at best, and no solutions at this point (or in our lifetime, probably). The next generation is figuring that all out now, and it will be up to them. You can't shop for something in stores when it isn't there. Like Barbara Diane and I have explained about our sizes so we have to get them online. And you trying to get a petite size! Or needing to drive an hour to a store. Extremely complex :(

Suz, I'm with you on NOT sewing! But maybe we need to bat our eye-lids at the Fabber sewists

I was thinking more about my returns, and I realize that until the pandemic, I was doing more of my clothes shopping in store. With the pandemic, I did order some things and had to return some of them. At the same time, I also realize I have been reordering my skin care supplies and some makeup--and I often order skin care online from Nordstrom anyway, because the store doesn't always have the exact products I'm after. So it occurred to me that balancing some clothes shopping with other non-fit items may be helping some shoppers like me from getting into the red zone.

Thanks all! I started out pretty upset and angry, but by giving it a few days while I organized both the data and my thoughts, I was able to turn myself around into a more positive frame of mind.

Also it's interesting to hear the different % numbers the guy I spoke with gave me about online vs in store sales, vs what Angie has heard from her contacts. I suspect her number might be more accurate since she has an ongoing relationship with folks at Nordstrom and I do not...but in any case Covid has changed the % dramatically.

Thanks Sterling, Sal, Bonnie, Slim Cat, Laura, Peri,

Barbara Diane that's an interesting idea.

Thanks so much Angie. YES it is exhausting! I feel like the last four months have been more exhausting than any time in my life. I think a lot of us feel that way.

Suntiger, thanks, and I've thought too about the value of measuring. I've imagined myself going into a store with a tape measure to check the rise on jeans before trying them on...but I never seem to do it.

Jaileen good question about whether using a Nordstrom store credit card matters to how they track things. I don't know. If you paid only with cash obviously they would not be able to

lisa p thanks! Here in the US we do have free shipping/returns with Nordstrom, but not many other retailers do it unless you spend above a certain amount per order, and many don't offer it free ever. It does seem that shipping/returns are far more expensive in Canada than the US, but it's not always free in the US. I think Nordstrom gets a lot of attention here on YLF because a lot of us like to shop there and Angie has access to the big HQ store, but not many other stores make shipping/returning free all the time. Ok Zappos does too . You raise a great point about trying to source things more within your own community. I think the ease of doing this depends very much on where you live. The clothes shopping options where I live are a few mid-range malls 45 minutes away, and 3 or 4 small boutiques equally distant, where I rarely bring anything home because they generally don't fit right. I'm not willing to drive an hour (one-way) on any regular basis for clothes shopping, but if I were, I'd have many more choices. Almost none of the stuff available to me is made anywhere nearby. As you and many others have discussed here numerous times, it's an incredibly complicated set of things to consider.

Kathie good point about how buying repeat items that work for you can be a great strategy at Nordstrom to keep the return rate down. .

Suz thanks! I had all the data I needed to look at my return rates but I had never sliced the data that way. I'm now looking at what my rates are for other stores where I shop online. None are quite as "bad" as Nordstrom but it's something I'll keep aware of now especially for places where I tend to find things that work.

DonnaF, until Covid hit, I did all my returns in store also. If you want to get a handle on your numbers you can go look at everything you've ordered online at Nordstrom going back at least 12-18 months (assuming you have an online account) and put together the numbers...it's a pain but the info is there.

Windchime, thanks! I felt I really needed to share this story with all of you since we have so many Nordstrom shoppers here. If I had been able to prevent being "fired" I probably would have.

Rachy, thanks, and you perfectly captured the whole mess in a nutshell. Multiply your example by a few bazillion other examples and customers etc....YIKES!

Firecracker, thanks, I do think I remember mentioning the petite sizing issue but I didn't push it. So many retailers are following that pattern that clearly we are not a big part of the overall market and I've learned to live with it. I do have a grumpy reaction when I hear them talk about "inclusive" or "expanded" sizing.....because that only seems to include larger sizing, not sizing for those of us who are short. :-)

Shevia, EXACTLY right! My primary goal was to come out of it feeling better. As I said earlier, I don't think the US has an overall culture of free shipping and returns. The older model of catalog shopping ALWAYS included shipping/return costs, and the majority of retailers do that online too, or only make it free if you spend a certain amount. Nordstrom is the big one that went with free always, and they may have a hard time moving away from that because everyone likes it and expects it. Zappos comes to mind also but they are ONLY online and seem to limit how much of their stuff goes on sale so they have figured out how to make it work. Hmm...I better check my rates there too!

Jenni NZ - yes your country is the envy of the world WRT covid! Because you are an island (actually two) of just under 5 million people, restricting incoming travel was easier and had a much bigger/faster impact than for bigger non-island nations, and other "tools" like lockdowns were effective much more quickly.

Barbara Diane - I've always done all my Nordstrom returns in store also (until Covid) so it did not make a difference.

Thank you so much for the update Chris. What a fabulous way you dealt with it, that guy must have been so grateful. It was good to hear your actual percentages- shows the value of record-keeping. My records are not as accurate as yours as mine are on paper and less complicated as I am mostly a B&M shopper ( and can be again if I wish, combined with online, as our country now has NO active cases of Covid-19. We are said to be the envy of the world).
It certainly sounds like they have not been meeting your needs as a customer for some time with their choices and particularly sizing.
Having said that, I am glad you talked to them about the cost of the endless free shipping back and forth. It does encourage customers to buy from them of course but there are obviously environmental downsides.
I agree with Lisap and am also trying to order more locally- although my last purchase was olive boots which were imported from Spain so still shipped across the world

I am not surprised that the rep you spoke with complimented you. I can only imagine what a more typical call would sound like. I do think it is a bit unfair in itself to not warn people of their policy, but you seem to have made peace with it and I am glad you feel better - the most important part.
Like Lisa, I live in a country without a culture of free shipping and free returns, and agree it is not our right. It is complicated though - it may be that shipping back and forth to a centralized warehouse is not less impactful than distributing goods to many small stores that reach all over the place and then being left with unsold items and/or shortages of in demand ones. But yes, local is probably better. But what is local and what if there is nothing locally available? Tricky stuff.

Chris, nicely done. Thanks for the update. I wonder if you had a chance to tell the rep that in your case so much of the problem is that they don't carry your size range in the store. That is a big failing on their part, and it will continue to be a problem for many, many shoppers.

I’m impressed with your honest self-assessment, Chris. I admire that. That’s integrity.

I also think the whole business of shopping is going to have to be revamped. Can’t shop in stores, can’t shop online... I’m trying to order a very expensive pair of sneakers. Customer service could not help me: they said a professional fitting is required, which of course is impossible right now. They suggested ordering multiple pairs... I don’t want $800 dollars of sneakers sitting on my card and no one wants me to be shipping back 75% of an order. I think they’re going to have to do a better job of conveying product specs.

Thank you for the update and I agree that you handled that beautifully. Very impressed!

There is one thing I hope they think through. I do return a lot, but also, Nordstrom has about 80% of my clothes shopping business and a lot of that is due to generous return policies. Nordstrom becoming stricter would in my case not make me keep more...it would make me buy less. I look at all online shopping as a gamble...one where sometimes I lose, but sometimes I hit it big. I will be so much less likely to take a gamble on something at Nordstrom if I know the return will cost me in more ways than one.

For instance, I like a lot of things I see at Garnet Hill but rarely order from there because their shipping and return fees are high. They might not be losing money on things I do order and return, since I'm the one paying that, but they are definitely having an opportunity cost loss since their policies cost them just about all potential business from me.

Hard to know the answers, but you are classy and I hope your future shopping works better for you.

Chris, thank you so much for updating us and for sharing your process with us. I'm so impressed (though not in the least surprised) by your calm, reasonable, and fact-based approach to the issue. What a great customer! They're crazy to let you go!!

It really helps to hear the percentages, too. I've never actually looked at that on my own account...I do return a lot, but not, I'm sure, as much as 85% of what I purchase.

Companies are definitely going to have to rethink this whole model. It's going to be a long time, I think, before people feel comfortable with in store shopping. And yet online shopping is definitely costly to the environment. I don't know what the answers are, really. We could all become sewists, maybe (but I won't!) -- people with fit issues simply can't shop in store because the stuff isn't there. I'm not even an unusual size and I still can't find items in my size in store a lot of the time.
