Just keep at it! I'm sure you'll find your "perfect" pair eventually. It might just take a lot of digging. I am struggling with the same thing right now. I have WAY too many jeans right now (many from makeyourownjeans.com, and I'm not really thrilled with any of them. :/

Just another person with a big hug to you and a "stick with it." Jeans aren't easy for almost anyone. I do not kid you when I say that I truly, without exaggerating, tried on over thirty pairs of jeans this last month (yes, month) in my search since last fall (yes, last fall) for a pair of boyfriend jeans. It takes a lot of trying to find great jeans. Once you find a few lines that work for you, you can stock up.

Just a couple of tips I've garnered from years of being a jeans freak:
1. Be prepared to alter. I'm 5'5". I shorten almost all of my jeans.
2. You can shorten any shape of jean. Bootcuts? Yes. I've done it lots of times. It will not ruin the shape. Skinnies. Trousers. Straight. All can be shortened.
3. You can take in the waist. I'm the girl without a waist, so I have to worry about a pinched waist, not a gaping one. However, my curvy friend (who looks great in her jeans) has the waist taken in on hers often. It is worth it. If it looks fantastic everywhere else, then call in the alterations lady.
4. If a pair is a near hit, then try on three more in the exact same style and size. One of them is going to be way better than the others. One is going to be a disaster. Somehow it always works out that way. Each pair of jeans is individual. If a cut seems almost perfect, then the next pair in the same size may be phenomenal, but you won't know until you try it.
5. It's not you. It's the jeans. There are so many styles of jeans out there because there are so many different shapes of us. If the world were cut for my straight shape, you would be miserable. If it were cut for your curvy shape, I would be miserable. Each failure is disheartening, but I try to celebrate the fact that it means there is so much variety in cuts. In the '80s and '90s, everything seemed cut for one shape, and it was way more curvy than I am. I am incredibly grateful that we don't all have to fit into the same jeans anymore.
6. Call in the experts. Call Nordstrom. See if they can hook you up with a personal shopper. Tell them what your measurements are and what jeans you have tried on so far. Call in the forum, like you have. I would never have found my Old Friend Jeans if Texstyle hadn't recommended them. American Eagle? That's where teens shop, right? Not moms in their 40s. Well, guess what. Apparently this mom in her 40s should have been shopping there earlier. And I would never have known if it wasn't for the forum.

I have no idea if you would be interested in something like this, but I had a good experience with custom jeans from Getwear.com. They make the jeans to your measurements and specifications - I was even super picky about where to place the back pockets, and they did revisions at no cost at all to me. Starts at $99. If you are interested, I do believe they gave me a coupon for a % off to share, too.
Here is my review: http://onedollarwonders.lookfa.....-pic-heavy
And the company site: http://getwear.com/design/
Just a warning that I had to take in my Jag pull-on at the waist, and I'm not nearly as hourglass-y as you. And since I took the waist in, I kinda have to wiggle into them to get them above my hips! I made a thread belt loop in back so I could wear a belt to further hold them up and be able to tuck or at least semi-tuck and cover up my hand sewn alterations on the sides.
From the leave no retail stone unturned dept: try Target Mossimo Premium jeans if you happen to be at a Target store for some reason.

Also - have you tried any GAP jeans? I like their Real Straight and their Long and Lean jeans. Yes, I had to have the long and leans hemmed to fit the shoes I was going to wear them with most often, but it was totally worth it. Just got them hemmed at a local alteration place nearby - cost me $10. I'm 5' 6" tall and the Long and Leans were still a bit too long for my lower heels (in regular length). That said, I see they come in 'short'/ankle as well.

Meanwhile, I wanted to say that I agree with Glory's suggestion to try Reitman's Comfort fit if it's not too ridiculous. I see from their website that they do ship to the US (it's a Canadian chain store). I bought two of their 'comfort fit' skirts there awhile back when visiting and they are fab. My Mom loves their comfort fit jeans.

http://www.reitmans.com/The-Or.....s/715891,d

Here's a link to all of their 'comfort fit' pants in petite sizes as well:

http://www.reitmans.com/The-Or.....&pref

I have no idea what their shipping is to the US, but it looks like the free returns is Canada only - but still, if necessary, it shouldn't be too expensive to ship something back to Canada (I sent my Mom a blouse for Christmas via UPS and it was $12 shipping at my local UPS store, so not that bad at all).

Anyway - the Reitman's "Comfort Fit" is pretty fab - and it's a very reasonably priced store in the first place. Hate to suggest some place that's out of the country, but sometimes you never know.

Hang in there - I hate looking for jeans too. Worse than bathing suits, imo.

Keep looking...it'll be worth it!

Talbots was my go to jeans, but they changed something. I ended donating two almost brand new pairs of jeans because they changed the rise on them and they ended up ending too low to be comfortable.

JAG jeans are next on my list!

I have a pair of curvy fit levis in botocut, but was trying for a jean capsule. Maybe I need to buy another pair or two if they are discontinuing those!

Thistle, your patience will eventually be rewarded. Great suggestions above. They key is to find one or two brands and fits that work for you and then explore all the washes and shapes they offer. Primarily I stick to just three brands of jeans because it takes so much guesswork out of the equation. Good luck!

The hunt for "the" jean can be frustrating but I think you are right not to settle for a less than perfect for you jean.
I love my Jag Jeans and had the bootcut shortened - it didn't change the nice shape of jean much at all. Otherwise you might try their straight leg and have that shortened - or are you only looking for a boot?

I have been hearing form Levis team that the Curve ID jeans may be discontinuing.....you may want to jump on that quick. I like the Demi Curve fit myself so thinking of ordering an backup pair in another color.

If waist gaping is an issue but the rest of the jean fits well would you be against having the waist nipped in by a seamstress?

Good luck on the hunt!
I'm sorry you are having a hard time with jeans. I totally understand, a good fit is so hard to find. I wear jeans pretty much everyday and live in fear of something happening to any of my favs.

I try on jeans every single time I set foot in a store that carries my size. I have a pair of Jag pull ons that I do like and I think they would be flattering on you. Mine are the bootcuts and were super long. I did have them hemmed--I generally need a 31-32 inch inseam as well. I think of them as my dressy jeans, I wear them to work at least once a week but I wouldn't wear them to a rock show.

Edited to add, NYDJs have been horrible, they are so high on me that the waistband sits on my ribs!

FWIW you look completely wonderful in dresses and skirts. I love your outfits that highlight your tiny waist and your curviness. I may have an easy time with pants - and, as you commented on my post, I'll let you be jealous of that, but only if I can be jealous of your curves and tiny waist. I wish I could wear and style dresses and skirts so that they look as good as they do on you.

(((hugs))) on your jeans search though - I too find jeans frustrating, and more difficult than other pants.

FWIW, I have a horrible time finding jeans. I realize that doesn't solve the issue of finding pants that work, but at least you know you aren't alone. I am shocked that NYDJ didn't even have a post-worthy pair because I have fit issues and they tend to fit me better than many others out there. Honestly, I don't remember their "slimming technology" - I don't know if all their pants have it, or if I just haven't noticed. Have you tried Gloria Vanderbilt? Wait, before I get slain for anti-fashion heresy! They have many higher waisted jeans that come IN in the middle (ideal for curvey hourglasses or pears) in a lot of newer colours (like cobalt, my fave). Good luck.

Have you tried Eddie Bauer? I love their Blakely curvy fit. I agree with you, I've never had luck with NYDJ even though others love them. I think it's better for a more rectangular shape. I've had some good luck with some of the brands at kohls - Lauren Conrad is one that comes to mind, and j. Lo (too short inseams on me but might work for you).

DonnaF. I will check that out! I have a pair of Levi's and it is the only pair of jeans I have ever bought that didn't gap at the waist.

Yes, I kept the ajennifer Lopez jeans. Sadly, those are the only ones by that maker in blue. I had hoped for a pair of straight legs to go with those.

I dislike jean shopping. "Leave no retail stone unturned". as a wise woman once said. Lee jeans? Wranglers (do they even make women's)? Old Navy?Keep looking!

Have you tried Levi's Bold Curve or Supreme Curve? You would probably have to go to an actual Levi's store or outlet or order online as I don't think that other stores carry them. My fit issues are slightly different, so I can't vouch for them myself. I think they are cut for proportionately small waists, but they may also zig where you zag. The Levi's site is currently running a 30% off deal, and like Gap, etc. you should never pay full price.
Did you keep the Jennifer Lopez that you posted about here...http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....more-jeans

I loved those!

Jeans shopping is absolutely no fun for me. I ended up with some jeans from American Eagle that are good enough. After 50 pairs I decided that I needed to be done done done looking as it was no fun! I wear these jeans as little as possible, but it is nice to have a few pairs and even nicer to move onto other items that I needed!

FYI - the NYDJ leggings http://www.zappos.com/nydj-jod.....ging-black were comfortable for me, but the NYDJ jeans were very very uncomfortable. Everyone says to size down, but I actually took a bigger size because I wanted them to look like pants (they are really thick). I wouldn't plan to wear them without my bootie covered.

Not sure if this pin will show up, but I searched for denim shirts a while back:

http://pinterest.com/pin/331296116308455408/

Could you wear ponte knit black pants with a really casual denim shirt or vest every few weeks on Friday?

Thanks, Tanya, I will check those. I usually take a 32 inch inseam. Jags are all 34, so cut for someone taller than me or someone who wears heels.

Thistle, Joe's Provocateur are cut especially for petites. They come in both straight and bootcut styles:

http://www.zappos.com/joes-jea.....2013031721...

http://www.zappos.com/joes-jea.....vAAAAf1Fmn...

I tried the boot cut and straight leg in NYDJ and I tried two different washes. None were even post worthy. when DH says, let's see the other pair, i know they are not good.

i am just frustrated.

I was checking out JAG jeans but I think the inseams are really, really long. That would eliminate boot cuts as those couldn't be shortened.

i have tried Kut from the Kloth, DKNY, and several others from Macy's. honestly, anything that says slimming I am now staying away from. It is neither flattering on me nor comfortable!

I know how frustrating it can be! I do want to second that a given brand can have different fits. For example, I can't wear most Kut from the Kloth jeans, but their Catherine Slim Boyfriend is perfect for me. Keep the faith!
