What a lot of work, and how satisfying!

Mr Maximal has been working on this, taking it one clothing category at a time. He's happiest letting things go when he knows there's need for them, as there is for large mens clothing.

Early on, he adapted to my method of bringing home clothing for him to try on in a session or two, with most of it going back immediately. When something is out of his comfort zone, he generally humors me by wearing it around the house for a few days before declaring a hard veto.

But as Runcarla says, all that really counts is what's inside.

Very impressive. I cannot get my DH to shop. If I bring things home for him to try, he keeps everything without trying on...a big mistake.

Danusia, have you ever seen "The Great Gatsby"? There was a time when DH had over 20 dress shirts, and after ironing day, I always felt like I was in the shirt scene from the movie! Just ironed shirts would be hung from every conceivable surface! Now, DH did his own ironing from early years in our marriage, but wanted lots of shirts so that he could do a marathon session once a month while watching a football game!

He still does all the ironing for our household!

I wish my husband was like yours! I am banished from my DH's closet. I am only allowed to hang stuff in there and not take anything out. All his coats and jackets are in the spare room closet and our downstairs closet. I once counted and he had 78 shirts - dress shirts and polos. This does not include t'shirts. He has 6 nice Gap tees and a drawer full of logo tees that I would like to burn in the fire pit. He loves deals and will buy underwear and socks when on sale. These at least I can throw our when too worn and he won't say anything.

I can go on and on... I should mention our closets are the same size and all my clothes, shoes, boots, handbags, all my jackets and coats, scarves and some exercise stuff (mat, weights, foam roller, stepper) fit in mine and does not look overstuffed.

I am terribly impressed. My DH dresses like a hobo most of the time: Ratty sweatshirts, ratty Ts, and ratty jeans or sweatpants. Plus, a lot is a size too big since he lost weight after he retired. I sneak the worst of it into the trash or rag bag. It's not like he doesn't have better clothing! At least he will wear the better stuff to church even if he dresses like a hobo to go to the supermarket.

Wow you did a fantastic job! I can't believe your husband agreed to it. My husband is still holding onto shirts from 15 or more years ago, though he doesn't wear them.

Laurie, the first time I did a closet cull with DH we shared a small closet in an older home. He had 3 times as much stuff as I had. I explained to him about consignment and about donations to causes that recycle clothes. It made him reconcile with letting go. After a couple of years it wasn't such a chore to convince him. This year was the easiest, and he really took the lead.

Cindysmith, though it is fun to have a dapper guy, what is beneath the clothes, and even beneath the skin, is what is important. ❤️

Emily K and Jenn - Even Angie's little Sam has a fan capsule!

I am excessively jealous. How did you get home to do a closet edit? I cannot get Sunshine to get rid of clothes for any reason at any time. I have to throw away his raggedy nasty torn stained work shirts on the slick (and then he gripes about having to cut the sleeves off the replacements). FORGET getting him to go through the nice clothes that he never wears and literally hasn't worn in over 8 years. He "might need them one day".

So yeah, I'm jealous and proud of you XOXOXOXOXO

DH was ruthless with this year's version of the closet cull and surprised me with what he was willing to let go. It was draining on him though, and we had to defer outfit creation to the next day.

We ended up with a bag of trash and 3 bags for donation. 2 bags were winter wear including a monster winter parka (winter fieldwork), an old ski jacket and pants, and a winter leather coat that was uncomfortably heavy to wear. 7 sweaters, and half the golf shirts were dispatched. Without prompting he handed over all but two chino pants. He volunteered that after our trip to NL, he couldn't stand the baggy look and after wearing them the past 2 weeks, never wanted to wear them again!

His dressy (suit) capsule is in good shape and there is variety. ( Ties down to 7 from 28!). His smart casual capsule for summer is good, but winter has a few holes (sweaters, trousers). His gym capsule is complete, but his golf capsule needs a complete overhaul! (He's looking forward to THAT shopping trip!). Shoes are good. Outerwear is good. Accessories are good. He likes cotton mock necks for layering, and his all need replacing. Socks and other u-wear are all good. His palette is heavy on light blue and beige, with grey, black, and Jean supporting colours. There is a bit of purple and chlorophyll green. For some reason that I can't figure out, he doesn't wear (like) navy. Navy trousers in particular become closet orphans. He is interested in shopping for brown and olive items this season.

PS: his fave sports team since forever is the Seattle Seahawks, so 'yes' he has team gear.
