It was extremely simple, Sara. All you need are gloves, a surface that you don't mind getting dirty, and the dye. I just sat down with a generous stack of newspapers, dunked the wool dauber (included) into the bottle, and applied it in long strokes. I wasn't especially cautious or tidy about it either.

For smooth leathers you may need to start with a leather deglazer (Fieblings makes that as well), to remove the surface finish and make the leather receptive to dye. My boots were distressed and rough, though, so I didn't need it.

The hardest part was getting the dye off the metal. I thought it would rub right off, but it did leave a stain. Luckily since the boots are so distressed and the metal is sort of antiqued, it doesn't look out of place. The second hardest part was scrubbing off the excess dye. It's going to take a few sessions with a washcloth to get it out completely. It's not hard, just laborious.

I've been on the fence about trying this. but you are inspiring. I'm hoping you'll share your lessons learned (i.e. taping off hardware and heels?) along with some future pics.

Two words April: Not. Done :p

I had to go in with rubbing alcohol and clean up the hardware. That took some of the dye off the surrounding area though, so I'll have to tape it off and put on another coat. The heels were more porous than I thought, so I had to just dye them too.

Next time I'll remember to tape those areas off...

Angie, I had a feeling you might not be happy about my experiment. But I really wasn't wearing them, and every time I tried, I would kick them off and reach for a black or gray pair instead. I had been looking for some flat booties and was frustrated that I couldn't find anything I liked. These were the perfect flat booties, except for the color, so I decided to research how I might be able to change the color.

Don't get me wrong. They were fab in cream, but I just wasn't wearing them and wasn't going to. I have had them for about 3 years now and have worn them only once.

Zap, I used Fieblings leather dye. I got 3 bottles on ebay but in reality probably only needed 2 at most. Maybe even just one.

I checked in this morning and they look good. Unfortunately the dye isn't coming off the heel and is a little hard to get off the hardware. I'll have to go in there with a qtip and some rubbing alcohol, or just dye the heels as well.

Some of you might remember I planned to experiment with dyeing a pair of cream orphan boots black.

Well, I just finished cleaning up after about half an hour and two coats of dye. I can't say for sure since the process isn't over until the boots are dry and I have buffed away the excess dye, but I'm feeling optimistic. They look really good. The metallic distressing still comes through, but they will mesh better with my wardrobe now. I did get some dye on the tiny stacked pancake heel and the hardware, but I'm operating under the assumption that those areas won't be porous enough to absorb the dye. Hopefully I'm right :p

The process was very easy. A child could do it. If you have shoes you aren't wearing anyway, I would say you might just want to give it a try. For $11 I basically have a new pair of shoes.

Yes, I will take pics tomorrow when the process is complete.
