Thanks for sharing. It is SO GREAT to see you come into your own. I love the authenticity of your posts, showing that neurodivergence is a different route, not a dead end. You are taking off in so many ways! Fun that your style reflects that.

Apologies for the delayed response, y'all! Busy couple of weeks with work, school, and planning a move (next weekend!) and a trip to Arizona (the following Wednesday!).

Runcarla - I agree completely about travel purchases! I'm a pickier shopper when traveling, so I tend to find the best items then and enjoy the stories that go along with them for years to come.

Rachylou - Thank you! Cultivating a solid style and wardrobe has been a big challenge for me but I think I'm finally feeling like I know my needs and likes well enough to shop as smart as I ever will.

Rejoiceandbe - You're very kind, thank you!

Angie - Yes, you should have seen me at the airport and on the plane guarding the hat. I'm sure it was quite a sight!

Jaime - I'm a hat person, too! Always happy to meet another one. After I move, I want to figure out a good way and place to display them so I think to wear them more often because each is a treasure.

Vildy - WOW, that's cool about your father! I really enjoyed learning about the process of how the hats are made, so thanks for sharing that!

Zaeobi - Adulting is such a struggle, yes! Sounds like you've got a lot on your plate, too. Solidarity, my fellow grad student.

SarahD8 - That's a great point about most people not paying close attention to us when we're out in the world! I'll notice if someone looks SUPER fab (I may have had to stop myself from staring at a guy on my university campus who had the most excellent old school academic look the other day, down to a beautiful satchel), but generally, I think we're all focused on doing our thing. Thank you for the compliment, as well!

Sal - Yes, easy to launder is a MUST for me. Good idea about the socks and crossbody bags, too - I've been working on switching to wool socks and have got to find some fun colored/patterned ones. The tricky thing is that a lot of them go up to a US size 9 and I'm a 10. But I know cute socks are out there. As for crossbody bags, yes, I like something small and light that can move with me, so those are perfect! Maybe next year will be the year that I finally get "into" bags. I've been loving the hand crocheted bucket bag I got in Ecuador (and it has llamas on it!).

Bijou - You make sense! I'm feeling quite good about where I am with my size, still working to improve my health but fairly satisfied with my energy, strength, and appearance. My jeans are fitting perfectly right now and should be good for a while if I slim down more, especially now that my stomach is a little flatter and it's more comfortable to wear a belt. And I have a couple things that are on the smaller side but will fit better in another 10 pounds or so. It's nice having fun pants to look forward to.

Suz - I am BLUSHING, thank you for the sweet compliment! And I absolutely agree about not being able to have too many Chelsea boots. I'm considering the red pair that Angie included in a recent blog post, too. I think they'd go well with my red fedora, and I absolutely do not mind that I would look like Carmen Sandiego.

You look absolutely GLOWING in that hat! What a fab style-setting purchase. Love it on you.

Also, congrats on setting such clear and do-able goals for yourself (style and otherwise). I love how you have recognized what is working and what is not working (i.e. work hours) and are making changes as you go. It sounds as if you and your wife are in a fantastic place in terms of your career trajectories and doing important, meaningful work. I can't wait to see your new items and outfits as you add them. And of course I am cheering you on particularly with the second pair of Chelsea boots. A person can never have too many pairs of Chelsea boots, in my opinion!

What a gorgeous photo, you look great in your hat. I'm glad you have been able to scale back your working hours, health and well being is so important. Lovely to hear that both you and your wife are thriving and doing such meaningful work.

Your wardrobe goals are well thought out and getting the foundation right is always the best place to start. It is tricky when you know you are going to change size. I am between two sizes and as terrible as it sounds, it is quite nice knowing that within a 10lb weight range I have my main bases covered and I don't beat myself up about it.

Love your hat and pleased you got a travel adventure in.

Your health journey is going well - congratulations indeed! And it sounds as though with being so busy that simple easy to care for pieces that wash and wear will be the ticket. I'd be looking for elevated basics with interest and adding cool accessories like your boots and hats. I could see socks and cross body bags being other accessories that work for your style.

Great update, Kaelyn, I'm really glad to hear that grad school is feeling right for you. I resonate with a lot of your style goals! Especially #1...I find it SO useful to have feedback from the forum on my experiments, but I also suspect that out in the world no matter what I am wearing somebody will love it, somebody else will hate it, and most people are just not paying that much attention to me so...I might as well wear what I like!

Your trip to Ecuador sounds wonderful and you found just the perfect souvenir. Your new hat looks great on you -- and WOW your shirt in that pic, that color blue is AMAZING on you!

I'm glad to hear that graduate school & the assistantship are both going well for you - I had to put my foot down & scale back to part-time work recently, in order to be able to really focus on my MA right now, so I understand where you're coming from with *technically* possible but not 'enjoyably' so (& also with 'needing to work despite preferring not to right now' - the joys of adulting, eh? lol)

On another note, dark brown boots are soo versatile, aren't they? I have no idea what took me so long to buy mine, but now I can't wait for autumn/ winter to hit so I can finally wear them again lol Speaking of accessories, items #5 & #6 sound like a solid plan - as tempting as it can be to focus on all the fun things (like accessories), a good base will get you further in the long run (but once you've got some simple silhouettes in your most versatile neutrals & colours, feel free to add in the fun stuff to jazz it up a little!)

Hey, y'all! It's been a bit. I haven't had many spoons for maintaining my presence online lately and have been SUPER busy, but I've spent a little time skimming blog posts I've missed and will try to check in on the forum a bit more this week.

On to the updates.

I lost around 10 pounds while traveling in Ecuador and am continuing that trend now that I'm back. I'm down a jeans size (more or less; we all know how maddeningly inconsistent sizes are), as well as a bra size. I have made my next goal to get below 200 pounds by the end of the year, which is very doable. If I succeed, it'll be the first time I've been that light since high school. I'm really enjoying my new jeans, and how things that aren't too big on me fit me differently/often better now. I've passed on several items, only one of which felt bittersweet (a favorite sweater that used to be slouchy but is now baggy). I'm also really enjoying seeing my muscles get more toned, especially in my legs. My arms are starting to firm up a little more, too... JUST a little.

I've started my graduate assistantship for the year and it's slow-going, but I'm excited about my goals for it and about the opportunity to give back to the students at my university. My supervisor is working on getting me a physical space for the Women's Resource Center I'm building, which will make my job quite a bit easier. As for my full-time job, I recently decided to reduce my hours because 59/week between the two jobs was... technically possible, but leaving me feeling too exhausted to enjoy my free time. I wish I could quit altogether, but my wife and I need the insurance, as hers doesn't provide it (but she just started her DREAM job at a private therapy practice that specializes in serving LGBTQ and neurodivergent populations, so I'm super excited for her!). Grad school itself is still going quite well and I'm having the time of my life. I have the sense that I'm where I'm supposed to be, and it's a good feeling.

As for style goals for the rest of the year, I'm keeping it simple. Mostly, I want to enjoy what I currently have, although there are a few things I'd like to add when I have the budget. Here are the goals:

1. Find new ways to wear the items in my wardrobe. Have fun experimenting and don't worry too much about what others might say. Remember that if it feels good and I like it, it "works."
2. Get a pair of dark brown Chelsea boots, because I LOVE the black ones I got earlier this year for the ease of pulling them on and off.
3. Replace a couple of t-shirts that got ruined by bleach stains when I had them washed while traveling. (I'm so upset because they were two of my favorites...)
4. Think ahead about what pieces I'd like to acquire in 2023 so I can be mindful about my purchases. Next year, I want to stretch what I have as far as I can and focus on replacing/revamping as my body continues to change. I want to establish a core wardrobe of pieces that will continue to work for me for a long time, and that means going for simple but not BORING designs.
5. Don't buy ANYTHING on a whim. Only buy things on the list I develop that represents things I actually need to fill gaps and will use. I'll carry this one, as well as #6, into next year.
6. Don't settle. Enjoy having access to more options at a slightly smaller size (as horrifically unjust as that is, and as hard as I want to keep fighting sizeism). Wait for the perfect version of anything I want. I have enough right now, so anything I want to add should enhance my wardrobe as much as possible.

And that about wraps it up! Now for fun, here's the Homero Ortega hat I bought in Cuenca, Ecuador. Did you know that "Panama hats" are actually from Ecuador? They call them paja toquilla hats, and Homero Ortega is considered by many to be the best brand. They have a factory-museum where you can learn about how they're made and in the gift shop, the staff will help you find your perfect fit and a style you like. I decided to go for a classic one this time... next time, I'll go for a funky color or pattern!
