I have sent things to thredUP and bought from them. IMO if you want to be sustainable, it’s better to get thredUP credit then use it on their site (since that is second hand).
PS their site search engine is terrible. Wish they’d copy the eBay search/results model.

Well, it’s good if you don’t have a consignment store or, if you’re like me, hate your local one. Although, I like Goodwill and I like to take my nicest things there, because it’s nice to find something really nice at Goodwill...

For me it is going to be good for dealing with mistakes, as noted by others. I also keep my clothes for a long time and have a hard time parting with mistakes. This will be helpful for me.

I take issue with "thredUP is the most responsible way to upcycle your closet for a better world". But it is a step in the right direction. Change as a business decision is still change.

Agree Jenn. Last weekend I took some clothes to my local consignment store, they kept 5 out of 8 items to “inspect” and decide if they are good enough to sell. Two were actual vintage, which they do accept ( one 50s one 80s) but otherwise the website says they want only certain designer brands ( includes NZ designers) or if faster fashion only past 2 years. And I think, why would you clear something out that fast? If it is still good then why turn it over so quickly? It’s only a good thing for mistakes I feel or else it encourages churn.

I got this email too. I don't think it is available in Canada. I see Jenn's point because I keep my clothes for a long time. Five years is like new in my wardrobe. But I do make mistakes so something like this would be helpful for me.

I've used Thread Up lots of times as a buyer and seller. An efficient way to pass things on in one go. They claim to recycle unused clothes, which is a real plus, but I admit I never did get much due diligence about their recycling practices...

I like it, it seems legit. By having standards it actually means they are looking at the clothing and then selling it. I think it's a good start, although I do see your point Jenn.

When I ordered my skirt from Reformation, they sent a ThredUp bag with a similar offer in the package. I have mixed feelings. To get credit, any clothes passed on have be less than five years old, name brand, and in excellent condition. It feels a bit like it’s just something to make you feel better about passing on still-good clothes and acquiring new ones.

This hit my inbox this afternoon and thought it worth a mention:

"Banana Republic is partnering with thredUP to reduce our impact on the planet by extending the life of clothing. thredUP is the most responsible way to upcycle your closet for a better world. Order a Banana Republic х thredUP Clean Out Kit and turn your gently used clothes into Banana Republic shopping credit."

How it works:
