Suz, yes. The window pane pants are coming with me for sure. I can wear them with sneaks and tall boots plus they are so so comfy to wear. I will remember to take body glide with me.
Rachy, I will look into getting Uniqlo thermal wear once I am there. Things are cheaper there as compared to Canada. This will be my kid's first trip to NYC so we will be doing a lot of family stuff there, hitting all the popular places like Central Park, Soho, chinatown, museums etc. Do you know any good places to eat there?

To be honest, probably nothing less than tennis shoes would work for me, the amount of walking I end up doing whenever I go somewhere.

Re. warmth: I have come to really really REALLY like the Uniqlo Heattech thermals. They're thin, but do the trick and have gone a long way towards eliminating the battle of the thermal neckline for me.

What are you planning to do in NYC?

How about bringing your window pane pants along? (The BRs)

I think the comfort of the Hi-Ness will depend a bit on your own foot (and foot issues). I wore them nonstop in Banff -- not for my true hikes, but all around town and on the mountain itself. And they were fine for me. But I haven't worn them in NYC, admittedly.

Suz, what great suggestions! Doc Marcies are an absolute work horse for winter and I will definitely bring these. We will be driving so, space will not be an issue. So, I think I am sorted in the shoe department.
1) Cons hi-ness
2) Doc marcies
3) Cognac tall boots
Now I have to play in my closet a little bit and see what outfits I can come up with.
Diana, I have not walked that long in my cons so I guess I will have to be cautious here. I am not planning on doing any fancy stuff so I will not take any dressy pumps. I only own one leather jacket and it is way too pricey to be rained upon so I will stick with my trench. Your favourite jeans strategy is genius. I am thinking GAP real straights would work really well for this purpose. Also, what do you think about bringing white or cream jeans to this trip? too risky?

I would bring whatever is your most comfortable (but still stylish) shoe for walking. Me, I would bring some booties or midcalf boots, and a pair of oxfords. Maybe a dressier bootie if I plan to go somewhere fancy like a show or symphony or something like that. I personally don't find my Hi-Nesses comfortable enough for a New York walking day - they are miles better than regular flat converse but I still find the soles unsupportive by the end of the day.

And for a topper, either a trench coat or a leather jacket (so long as you don't mind the leather jacket potentially getting rained upon, so probably not suede). Trench is probably more versatile and a bit lighter to carry around.

ETA: My favorite jeans strategy for this kind of weather is to bring something that can be either rolled up and worn with bare ankles if it's warmer, or worn full length (could be tucked into boots or worn over booties/oxfords) if it's colder. So something like slim straights/BFs or skinnies that you can roll up.

SO exciting!!!!

I am a pro at this. (If I do say so myself).

First, are you flying or driving or taking the train? If you are flying, of course you will need to pack more carefully. If you are driving, take as much footwear as you can! :)

Also, plan to buy some while you are there. There's a Nordstrom Rack at Union Square.... (among a gazillion other options.)

Do you still have the Doc Marcies? I wore those on one New York trip and found them surprisingly fantastic and versatile. The wedge makes them absorb a lot of shock.

I also really wore the heck out of my Report booties when I was there one time. It might have been the same trip.

My theory is, the more shoes, the better. Take at least 3 options. And switch them up. A change is as good as a rest. Also, bring that body glide stuff and/ or blister bandages just in case.

If I were packing for this trip, I would bring:

1 low heeled, comfortable bootie
1 sneaker (your Cons are totally good here -- bring one of those Tide sticks along and they will clean up pretty well.)
1 shoe that could work for any dressy events you might be doing (if needed)
1 tall boot (maybe) or another bootie.

For clothing, I'd go with:

A trench coat
My favourite, most versatile topper
3 or 4 knit tops/ sweaters
A dress or skirt for dressier events
Jeans
One pair dressier pants
2 or 3 skirts/ blouses
2 or 3 scarves.

That is a good idea, Lisa. May be I can bring my cognac tall boots. Light weight layers is what I have in mind too. I am going to play in my closet and come up with a few possible outfits. So far, following is what I have in mind.
1) White hi-ness cons
2) cognac tall boots
3) Trench coat
4) blue skinnies
With these in mind, I have to come up with a few outfits. I will post on the forum to see if they work.

Everyone is already pulling out their boots. I would recommend short booties with skinny jeans, or tall boots with skinny jeans, or boots with bootcut jeans if it is not a wet weather day. Shoes that can go the distance in NYC for walking is a must! And black is always the most popular color in NY (although that doesn't mean you have to sport it, but darker colors generally rule the streets). I would recommend layers, right now light weight layers work well. And a topper that you don't mind to carry just in case the day is warmer in the afternoon. The temperature tends to swing quite a bit from am to pm at this time of year.

Thanks, Sadie and Janet. I did not think of dirty streets so I am not going to take my Zara loafers as they are new and dressy.
Janet, I am okay if the white cons get dirty. My friend told me that she put her daughter's cons in washing machine and they came out looking like new.
Trench and booties sound like a great idea. I need to start hunting good walking shoes. At the moment, I don't have any.

I would say don't bring too much in the way of heavy layers -- it may be cool, but probably not cold. October is early enough in the year that it's possible to get a bit of a warm "indian summer" day or two as well. I also tend to run warm once I am out and walking around. So I would concentrate on lightweight but long-sleeved tops, with layers like cardigans and jackets. A trench coat is great for a lightweight layer of warmth and protection in case it rains. Leave the heavy knits and wool coat behind.

I would personally avoid white footwear, and I say that even though I wear my white sneakers on the streets of Baltimore. But the Hi-ness are such a great walkable shoe that maybe you are like Angie and have no fear of dirtying your white shoes! For me, I'd go with a low-heeled bootie that I feel comfortable walking miles and miles in. I have lhad days in NYC when I logged eight or so miles of walking. In case of rain, booties would keep feet covered with something more waterproof than canvas, and with a higher vamp than a loafer or a ballet flat.

NYC: you will walk miles so comfort is a must. Streets are dirty and it may rain (even dirtier). I often go with black sneakers for day. I'm not a boot person but boots would be a good choice if you have comfortable ones. Dressy shoes (flats or heels) for evening.

Hello everyone,
We are planning to visit NYC on Columbus day long weekend. You know what I am going to ask next? right! Travel capsule.
I know it is going to be cold so I will definitely take lots of layers with me. But how do I do it in style? Reading through some of the old threads on the forum, I know comfortable footwear is a must. I have the following two pairs that I think would work.
1) White cons hi-ness
2) These zara loafers.http://www.zara.com/ca/en/woma.....09130.html

Do you agree or disagree?
