It sounds like your husband dresses like mine!

I am casual, too, but I want to be a step up from hiking boots and fleece. We'll be in cities - museums, restaurants, etc. He's planning to bring what we took on a week long kayaking and hiking trip to Alaska, where we never saw any people outside our group. There, zip off pants, hiking boots and fleece were entirely appropriate.

Luckily I'm fairly casual as my DH certainly is. The only things he ever wears are hiking pants and wicking Ts. However he has mostly switched to full length pants rather than zipoffs and they look almost like normal trousers.

That's a good idea - discuss what I'm bringing. While I know that what he wears doesn 't reflect on me, the fact is I don't want to see those clothes!

I have come to the conclusion that my hubs is not interested in clothes or style. He is tidy and I can add a shirt or two and make a suggestion but the way he dresses is not a reflection of me and it is not his thing

However, if you could see his golf wardrobe, it is killer, no joke, but that is his passion

I agree with Rae. If you share your packing plans with him, he might say, "Oh...you're going to dress up...I won't look as dressy as you..." and then he might step up his game. Or he might say, "WHY dress up?" in which case you can have a conversation about it.

My hubs has definitely stepped up his fashion game since I joined YLF. He was in need of new clothing, too, following a weight loss. He will never win any trend-setter awards but he dresses a lot more nicely within his preppy professorial preferences now and has given Banana Republic a lot of business.

That's a good idea, too. If I hadn't stumbled on this site a few months ago, I might have planned to take fleece as he is planning to bring, undoubtedly!

Hm, maybe you can bring it up by "asking for suggestions" on what to bring, as if you want to coordinate or can't decide. You can ask what he's wearing on the plane, then subtly as what he's bringing to wear to that nice dinner you talked about in the city.

I agree, haranguing is not worth it. I might try what you've suggested. He dresses nicely most of the time, but when he's on vacation he feels like he can do whatever. It's just that these particular garments are more utilitarian than they need to be. After all, we will not be camping!

I pointed out some things online that I thought might be good for our recent trip, and Mr. K actually ordered some of them. We were going to the tropics so he got some nice lightweight khakis and a couple pair of linen trousers. And then, believe it or not, he did ONE trip to Nordstrom Rack the day before we left and picked up enough nice shirts to see him through.

Then while we were on the trip I pointed out some things the other men were wearing that seemed like they would be good for the next trip.

I don't harangue, though. How he dresses is really his business at the end of the day, and to me it's not worth haranguing about.

To rephrase, if you have stepped up your wardrobe, how do you get your SO to do so also? Is it posible without haranguing?

I have the opposite problem. I like to look nice and have the appropriate clothes for the situation but I'm also totally a carry on only girl. Give me a wrap dress and a few pairs of shoes and I'm set for weeks. My love on the other hand is a total overpacker. He organizes his closet around outfits so he can't take that blazer without those shoes without that belt. So often he'll be dragging his big checked bag with me bopping along with my backpack and someone will say 'carrying your girl's luggage?' we just laugh.

My husband and I are planning a trip to Turkey and Georgia in late April or early May.I'm already starting to think of items I already have that would make nice outfits for travel, what I might need, given what the weather will likely be. While we may be in rustic areas, we will also be in cities, and I think it's nice to dress up a little when in a city. I am expecting my husband to pack as if we're going hiking or camping - nylon pants with zip off legs, nylon shirts with lots of pockets, goretex jacket, etc. You get the idea. Do any of you have this problem? How do you get your travel partner to dress nicely, or at least look like you are going to the same place? Maybe I'm the problem, not him.
