meltedchocolate, eh? I don't think I could bear it. As Diana said, here in Boston it is muggy. Usually I can feel good out on the river where we sail, but this year the heat is relentless even there. And speaking of sailing, what is up with all the thunderstorms this month? How are people supposed to go to the beach? We do put up with a bad winter so we can enjoy our New England summers, you know.

I shouldn't complain, though, because we do have central AC and even without it, our place is bearable. But I am feeling anxious about all this, including uncharacteristic hot weather up in Alaska as Una is reporting. Sounds like climate change to me.

Ugh. This afternoon came with a hail/thunderstorm and the humidity spiked.I mean, wipe your face with a napkin type humidity. Where coworkers were asking me if this is how FL is humidity. Not good. The breeze kept it tolerable.
Tomorrow is a double, and my first shift is the sweaty one, but I need to rush to the second to be in black and whites for a wedding for wine makers. Yikes. I don't think I'll have time to shower between.
Dreaming of Tuesday off to swim Angora Lake :D

I do NOT do well in the heat- even after 8 years in the desert. The biggest issues is that when we get a heatwave, our humidity actually goes up. 102 with low humidity usn't actually that bad, but 105 with higher than nomral humidity is horrid. It's supposed to be 111 here on Sunday. I am running away from it and going down to the beach to visit my folks- that's how I deal with it!

The high is only going to be 75F where I live and it will still get cold once the sun goes down, thankfully.

But the weekday commute down to an area where the temperature is in the 90s has been horrendous. I've resorted to wearing my flamboyant weekend clothes to work because I can't handle wearing anything restrictive in this heat.

Today I'm wearing a blue/teal/white patterned dress by INC that has an empire waist, asymmetric hem (touches the floor), front cutout, and a halter neck. I'm toning it down by wearing flats, a short sleeve green cardigan and a secondbase cami underneath, but yes, it's still a bit much.

I'll probably re-wear the whole outfit on Sunday.

Good info, Velvety! I'm already hot and feeling vague. I'm not only out of my puffers, I'm wearing sleeveless in the office. It's the humidity. The humidity is rather unusual. I went and got my fans from my mum's basement yesterday evening, in preparation for the weekend. One of them is an evaporative cooling fan.

I just wish fans & A/C didn't make so much noise.

This heat is right on schedule for Utah, always the hottest in the "severe clear" days of late June/early July. Worse in AZ, my mom said it's going to be 118 in Phoenix. Doesn't make it any more pleasant, even here at almost 7000'. I'm doing my chores before the sun gets high and hoping the monsoons set up earlier in July rather than later. If this carries on too long, there won't be irrigation water for the orchard. As it is, we are probably going to have to buy a pump to get it out of the canal (it usually flows over the bank when we set a dam). I hate to see thirsty trees.

velvetychocolate - are you on the Wasatch Front? I lived in SLC for 19 years. When the swamp cooler couldn't keep up, my A/C was a picnic up Millcreek. Drive uphill until the temperature suits, bring books, stay until dark. Here, I guess I will go up Boulder Mtn, because we didn't put AC in at all for the 2 weeks a year it's like this.

Is it wrong that I'd like to try the dry heat for a change? :D

Here it's all humidity. For us, means lots of water and trying to do all of the field work in the morning or coming in early so we can get more work done while its "cool." Thankfully it's been a cool year for us, but mid to upper 90s with about 80% RH is still pretty warm.

Keep cool everyone - sounds like there are a few of us without a/c, and even with a/c - when it gets that hot, there's no going outside much anyway.

I did manage to sort of pre-prepare some extra food yesterday before it gets even hotter this weekend. Greek lemon marinated (olive oil, lemon juice, Greek seasoning) baked chicken breasts with dinner last night. I made extra though, so won't have to cook anything tonight. Cold chicken salad or maybe a big green salad with chicken, avocado and tomato or something along those lines for tonight/tomorrow etc.

It's not too bad this morning, but it should get to around 103'ish later today, according to reports.

Vegas cciele? Whoo boy - I know it's going to be extra-hot there. Thing is, it'll be easy to stay inside most of the time, and enjoy sights, sounds, shopping and entertainment. I don't think you'll want to do much wandering around outside on the Strip, traipsing from hotel to hotel though! If in doubt, and you want to get from point A to point B - take a taxi. It'll be worth the $ (usually less than $10) and you get door-to-door, instead of a long walk between hotel/mall entrances and the monorail or the street.

Mo - now I know why you were looking for *lightweight* slim chino type pants! Makes sense to me now.

Diana - I kind of love older buildings and houses, but I know what you mean about all their quirks. The house I'm in is a Victorian-style house (must be at least a hundred years old), and there are lots of little issues I wouldn't have thought of, until I lived in one! Meanwhile, I don't know how much you cook or like to cook, but one kitchen thing that gets more use in the summer than the winter is my crockpot! I wouldn't have thought this, but then - voila - it doesn't heat up the house in any way. Plus, it makes way more food than the two of us need, so that means lots of leftovers to put into the freezer - handy when you don't want to cook at all.

Hmm...it'll be hot here until the end of September - not necessarily 100F, but I remember coming back from my cruise last October (the 20th) and it was 80F. My aunt came to visit me mid September, and it was well over 90F.

I think I might hit Costco and get another window air conditioner today. It's a bit of a pain to install though...:)

Gack, I'm going to be in Vegas during the heat wave. This is reminiscent of the last time I was in Vegas in the summer, during a similar heat wave. My solution will be to stay inside with the (sometimes arctic) A/C and appear outside after 11 pm!

yep - we are avoiding our condo's 3rd floor for the whole week. The heat just rises and we have no a/c in Tahoe. Ditto the pub job with 2 levels. I get to run up and down with armloads of food and drink with no a/c. Fun. Not. Luckily, it gets back into the 40's at night so the house can at least cool off before the next day's onslaught.

Blech. I feel your pain. We just had a few days of 90+ and 80% humidity here in new England. It's like walking around in soup. I have a 10 minute walk to the bus and then it's anyone's guess whether the bus will be pleasantly air conditioned, arctic, or a sauna. I carry water with me everywhere, and a cardigan in case of arctic AC.

My apartment is on the fourth floor of a prewar brick building. It retains heat like you wouldn't believe and of course there is no central AC. I have a window unit in the bedroom and one in the living room, am wondering if I need one for the kitchen too as making dinner this week was unpleasant. Although.... Another quirk of these old buildings - running the AC and the microwave at the same time trips the circuit breakers.

I grew up in SoCal which is hot but dry. When I first moved here the humidity would make me feel physically ill, lightheaded and sometimes nauseous since it didn't even feel like I was breathing air. I think I've acclimated a bit but it's still highly unpleasant.

Broiling here already in Utah, and the heat is only going to get worse. Parts of California, Nevada and Arizona are going to get 'extreme' heat starting tomorrow/Saturday.

Is everyone prepared? I hear that even Seattle is going to get 90+ F temps next week.

When I saw the forecast/news stories, I ran out to the grocery store and loaded up on stuff for the weekend, so I don't have to be out and about during 100+ temps. Interestingly, while perusing the weather/news reports, I clued into something - there were links on the weather sites to things like, "How to Protect Yourself from the Heat" and so on. I should have known this, but I didn't - so am sharing it here, in case it's useful to anyone...

In humid climes - the hot weather makes it so that people can't cool off properly because they don't sweat as much in a humid climate as they might in a drier climate. These people are more susceptible to heat exhaustion, heat sickness or even heat stroke. Remedy? Stay cool - don't hang out in the heat. Obvious, I know....but keep in mind - this is why people in humid climates are more likely to experience heat exhaustion - it's because the body cannot cool itself (sweat) adequately and gets overheated.

But then, in drier climates (such as Colorado or Utah) - the issue is that in very high temperatures - people actually sweat *more* than usual, thereby leaving themselves susceptible to dehydration and electrolyte loss. Remedy? Stay cool, obviously.

That said, newly "clued in" to the fact that the issue in a dry climate is dehydration - I loaded up on fresh fruit, veggies, ice, and even V-8 juice (high in potassium). I don't have central A/C (rental house), but do have a small 'window' air conditioner that barely cuts it. GAH!

For those in more humid climes, I would suggest not letting yourself get too hot in the first place. No A/C is the norm in places like the PNW - and one thing that used to work for me in Vancouver during the odd spell where it would get hot is to place a box fan (or any fan really) with the air blowing OUT of my apartment window, so as to blow out all the hot air that had accumulated during the day, and then turn it back around and use it as a regular fan. Keep the drapes closed all day and so on.

Of course "style" seems to go right out the window in times like these. I feel a bit silly, but I am wearing a bathing suit cover up and a pair of flip flops. No, I wouldn't go out like this, but it works while I'm at home. It was 99.8F at 10 a.m. this morning, and no proper A/C.

I might have to go and buy another window air conditioner - the living room is unusable right now - way too hot. We'll see if I want to cough up the $300 or so....might be worth it.

Anyway....are you prepared for the heat wave coming this weekend and into next week?
