Wanted to report back. We have had the bike for about a month. My husband is making good use of it and is already fitting back into some jcrew cotton pants which had previously been getting too tight.

As far as for me, one of my toes got re-infected at the site of an old surgery: entirely unrelated to the bike, seems to be on account of some chafing from Dansko clogs. Anyway I had to rush to the podiatrist and have a small procedure and she said that if I didn't let it heal properly she would have to remove a lot more skin next time.... So I have been just riding the new bike for about five minutes here and there just to warm up a bit but not enough to put a lot of pressure through the foot. Still unclear whether it is going to heal properly. I'm eager to get using it more.

My DD bought a super nice road bike from Amazon for $600. We can always buy a stand for it if she wants to use it indoors. Our neighborhood is hilly, so she gets a good workout with it.

As for the upright bikes used in spinning classes, I don’t care for the uncomfortable seat. I bought a really nice recumbent bike from Amazon for only $170, and I love it.

I think that is a great decision. I am recovering (still) from ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair and the bike is the main part of my rehab. I use my road bike on a trainer at home and a stationary bike at the physical therapist. Good luck with your purchase.

Well I did a lot of online and hands-on research and decided to go ahead and buy the indoor cycle. It's a BH LK700ic.

I looked at other brands pretty thoroughly but I really wanted to get a robust an bike under 100 lbs. We will very likely move it up and down stairs spring and fall. Also, I wanted one with dropped handlebars included as one of the handlebar positions for more back and shoulders position variety. And this was the only one like this.

I strongly considered getting a trainer like Staysfit suggested, and for just myself I would have proceeded to do that. However, my husband wants to get back into biking. He can't fit comfortably on my bike and his bike has an internal gear hub which takes advanced bike maintenance mechanical skills to work together with a trainer. And he tried out the indoor cycle at the store too, and frankly (he's just over 200 lbs) it was rocking back and forth a little when he was pedaling while standing. It was still stable, but it was clear that if he got a second indoor bike and a cheap trainer it would be in danger of tipping over. And if he got an expensive trainer plus a new bike then it would be the same price as the indoor cycle.

I also tested my road bike in this process and found that the seat is still very comfortable for me. However the pedals are tough on my knees. I think that if I get pedal spacers to make the distance between the crank and pedal 20 mm wider, my knees will be happier next spring.

The indoor cycle seat on the BH is pretty good. I took Joy's suggestion and did a longer ride. Ride number three. It's not quite as good as my road bike seat. I might switch out the seats for the winter.

New indoor cycle will arrive next Saturday. I will give you all and update when we have had it for at least a week. Thanks again everyone.

I wouldn’t bother. You can purchase a decent road bike for less, put it up on a trainer, which allows it to function exactly like an exercise bicycle, and you can save yourself some money. A decent road bike, if you plan to use it indoors, might be $500, and a trainer is going to be less than $200. You can pocket the money you save and use it for some nice spinning videos to watch while you ride. My trainer and bicycle sit on a mat. My bicycle is quiet too, so I can pretty much use it when the rest of my family is sleeping. I used it when I wanted to keep up my aerobic fitness while I had a femur fracture. (Marathon runner here). I could use it for any spinning workout you can come up with, and it’s perfect for speedwork/intervals. Extra bonus, you can take the bike off the trainer and onto the road when the weather is nice. Double bonus if you already have a decent road bike and all you need are the trainer and the mat.

I think about the bike - 1) it was just too convenient a height, and the handles were calling out to be used as hooks, lol and 2) it felt like such a production to get on and use it. The mini-stairstep with resistance pulls for the arms was compact and tidy. I’d just hop up and get going... maybe it was a balance thing. I think about it, and I didn’t worry about balance on the stair step.

Well, $1400 works out to be 6 month gym membership around here...

Seriously, if you can afford it, you feel good riding it, and you need to keep up with your exercise program to stabilize an arthritic knee, I vote to buy the bike and start using it now. Like Danusia, I believe quality exercise equipment becomes used exercise equipment, while the so-so stuff is all too often what ends up as a clothes rack or on Craigslist. If the bike feels like “gliding on butter”, and the seat feels good, I’d be whipping out my credit card. Cheaper and less hassle than knee surgery!

In my experiences, I tend to buy quality exercise equipment that will last a long time (especially of they have electronics). That does not necessarily mean the most expensive. My treadmill and recumbent bike were pricey (not the priciest), but I have had them for over 10 years and use each one several times a week. I am now looking for a quality rowing machine as I am now "hooked" on them after using them at my workout place.

Rachylou, I am wondering what changed for you between getting the stationary bike and deciding that you weren't interested in using it. Not intended as a judgmental question. I'm just wondering if you found it uncomfortable or too large for the room or easier to watch TV with the stepper or anything else like that.

My mom's friend who had a stationary bike, she and her daughter used it a lot. I think that they each enjoyed it as alone time, because when they went outside to walk, it was usually with their rambunctious German Shepherd.

SandyG, I need to think about whether I am in a hurry. I guess it depends....

If this is going to be a bad winter then I'd like to get it soon, but if it's going to be mild I think I can wait until spring. So I guess I better look up some long range weather forecasts. Thanks, I hadn't quite been able to articulate that time myself.

Yes, I probably could try the expensive one for a longer period. Both stores were pretty empty so I doubt it would be a problem....

As far as the seat, I typically find most regular bicycles and exercise bikes to be ergonomically not very comfortable in either the seat or handlebars or seat to pedal angle. This fancy bike felt like gliding on butter. So smooth in every respect. I doubt I will change my mind for twenty minutes versus five, but I thank you for the warning and I will do that if I do go back to the store.

I'm hoping that with the cheaper option I can have success with trading out the standard seat for one of my regular bike seats that I know do work for me. My husband and I have three seats for two road bikes and the stationary one uses the same standard. Your comment is making me think that even with a better seat I might not be comfortable with the cheaper option.

I do have a treadmill. I use it when it is too miserable to get outside. I have recently moved somewhere where the outdoor biking situation is precarious because of twisty roads with steep hills. I need to keep up my quadriceps muscles in particular in order to offset my knee arthritis, and I am looking for some variety to do something besides using my resistance bands and squats.

I don't know anything about stationary bikes, but my regular bike had a seat that killed me. I bought one recently at REI made for women, and it makes all the difference. It has to do with the width, for women's sit bones. Now I could go for hours, if I were fitter, that is!

Are you in a hurry? I'm a big believer in testing out exercise machines before you buy, otherwise you risk living with an expensive clothes rack. You've tried one spinning bike but there's a wide range between $400-1,400 so I'd recommend taking some time unless you decide you want it right now. It's a personal decision with no wrong answer, just details that matter to you.

Around New Year's almost all exercise equipment goes on sale. And a couple months later Craigslist is filled with nearly new exercise stuff.

I bought my favorite machine online from an out of state professional gym. It was used, in excellent condition and about half price. It took some time to find it but I wasn't facing any deadlines :)

Can you give the bike a long try in the store? I ended up using a home treadmill most because the seat on the bike was so uncomfortable after 5 or 10 minutes. Yes, we did get a more cushioned seat and even a gel-filled seat cover. Still uncomfortable. Used exercise equipment is hard to get rid of.

There is a sale this weekend for 20% off of an expensive exercise "spinning" type bicycle. I've tried it twice in two locations of the same chain store and I really like it. Sale price is about $1400 before taxes.

There are bicycles for far cheaper around $400 before tax which get decent reviews. Unfortunately no retailers around me bother to stock any of the cheaper models on the showroom floor. So I would have to order it, get it upstairs assemble it try it out and if I don't like it, then I'd have to get it in my car and drive it to a nearby store, and the thing is 90 lbs.

Nearly everything which makes option one more expensive is an advanced feature which I hope to use, but I definitely won't be using straight away.

I'm fairly certain that the expensive option is likely to be operated past its ten year warranty, whereas I have some doubts about the longevity of the cheaper option.

Usually, for wearable merchandise I look for longevity, but am willing to look past the brand at actual garment construction and sometimes I can get a bargain price.

I thought I would post this here instead of something like Reddit because I am trying to avoid any biased company representatives or diehard brand loyalists.

I can afford the expensive option, but I would prefer to spend less if it is a reasonable choice. It irks me to buy disposable items, but I find it equally irksome to buy into brand mystique, which may or may not be a factor here.

Thanks for your attention.
