As a sewist, I am totally in awe of double cloth wool coats. The hand work involved is huge! I have a couple of pieces that I cannot get up the nerve to take on. These fabrics are very warm in and of themselves. The interior beauty of the finished coat stands by itself. I am guessing that sleeve linings are only added for "slip" so they don't bind on blouse sleeves, etc. I doubt the fabric would pill in the interior of the coat. Every piece of double cloth wool I have ever seen is of very high quality.

Wow, that's crazy and yeah, total dealbreaker. No lining means the wool is likely to pill really fast, and will also cause your sweaters etc to pill faster too. I could see it on an "indoor" type jacket (although I still prefer them lined) but definitely not an overcoat.

My Gloverall duffle coat is double faced wool, with no lining whatsoever. It's very warm but I don't know if it's warm enough for a Canadian winter. I wore it on a trip to NYC and was fine, but it wasn't below 0F.

Supposedly alpaca is warmer than wool due to the structure of the fiber. Others here have said they haven't experienced that.

Perhaps the coats you are looking at are made of double faced wool. It has two right sides and garments made with it are not lined. A special seaming technique is used to provide a finished seam on both the outside and inside of the garment. No, it's not cheap. Often lining is used to cover unfinished seams inside a garment. I don't imagine that a thin layer of lining adds much warmth.

Diana, the ones I'm looking at have no lining at all. Puzzling, right?

ETA: Just double-checked. One has an "upper lining" and a "sleeve lining" but is still referred to as "unlined."

Are you talking about no lining at all? Not even the silky acetate or similar material? That would be a TERRIBLE idea. Warmth aside, a totally unlined winter coat would not hang well over winter clothing at all. Imagine the arm bunchiness! :Z

Or do you mean no thinsulate/down/quilting or other insulation? I don't find the lack of those things so strange as no matter how thin they do add bulk and stiffness. For me it's not a deal breaker because I find myself plenty warm by adding extra layers underneath.

FWIW, my Burberry wool coat (Brit, so the "cheapest" of the burberrys) is fully lined with silky acetate but does not have additional insulating materials.

I've been looking for a nice, non-puffer winter coat for awhile and was surprised to find high-end designers (Sentaler, Burberry, etc.) making winter coats unlined. The coats I was considering were made from either pure cashmere or alpaca/wool. I understand that a lining might add slight bulk to thicker coats, but omitting one strikes me as really cheap. I can't imagine that unlined cashmere or alpaca coats would be warm enough for typical Canadian winters. Or am I wrong?
