Last time I was in jcrew very recently I felt like they were trying to be Loft, Club Monaco, and Talbots all rolled into one. And then they took a third of a small store which used to be just men’s and women’s clothing and added children’s clothing right smack in the middle of the store and almost right in front of the register.

Furthermore, the one blazer that I wanted to scope out from seeing it previously online was displayed so awkwardly that I didn’t recognize it in front of me. Additionally, the mannequin wearing the blazer was posed halfway across the store at the far end of the children’s section. And the blazer came in two additional colors in the store: of which there was no mention online. And even in the very small women’s section, it was totally unclear what was their organization scheme. It wasn’t grouped by item type, style or color, as far as I could tell.

And there were a few adult tops folded up on a table so close to the register that I had assumed were part of the new children’s section. I didn’t see them until I was just about to pay. I was actually interested in one and might have tried it on if I didn’t already make plans to meet up right after leaving the store.

Everything about this place was extraordinarily awkward. And the people staffing it were milling about not paying attention to the customers and then calling across the room to one another: partly on task but partly just gossip.

I’ve rarely seen a chain store run in so unprofessional a manner.

I have been too busy to examine whether the claims about poly are true. (Sorry to have just posted and run before - crazy week. But that's among the complaints, true or not, along with just a general dislike of the collection.)

Hmm, interesting in theory, and hooray for attempts to be more size-inclusive! But Anna's observations make me wonder how successful it will be. JCrew has fallen completely flat for me for the last few years. They simply cut too straight for my body type, and their knits (the only thing that works for me anymore) are not the quality they used to be. How they will translate their fits to an expanded size range will be interesting to see.

ETA: Ooops, I forgot. One successful item from J Crew lately: a hat! LOL It figures, of all things, they actually make a hat sufficiently small to fit my tiny head.

Is there that much poly? It looked like mostly cotton and cupro to me, plus some ponte for the pants. Admittedly, the prices do seem high to me, but J Crew always prices in anticipation of constant promotional discounts so I pretty much disregard their MSRP.

I saw some people on J Crew Aficionada not looking too enthused at the price point coupled with the use of poly.

Huh, very interesting. I've had dismal luck with J Crew's fits for many years (they were my go-to right through college, then something changed), so it's funny to see them say "We're obsessed with fit." It is nice to see more options in a wider size range, but if these items are cut as straight as most J Crew garments I've tried on, they won't work for me. Usually their stuff is too roomy in the bust/waist, but too tight in the shoulders/hips/calves... I'll be curious to know if they're actually Universal Standard fit models, or just their branding.

Hmmm, JCrew from what I’ve read Isn’t doing as well as they used to. Visiting their stores is far from inspiring. Don’t know if that is due in part to Jenna Lyons leaving. And then there’s the luxe stuff, which was full on designer pricing, but not really designer.
Also I feel that they were very slow, very slow on expanding their size range. And of course it was only offered online.
Universal Standard is becoming quite popular. But some of these JCrew offerings are a bit weird.
Real test is how much of it ends up in the clearance section. Or if they do another collection
I’d like to see it in person, but closest is Portland, Oregon. Universal Standard has a new showroom in Seattle, so that may be part of it.

ETA, I went over to their website for the first time in ages. I guess the luxe stuff is gone, but oh my goodness, so many ruffles. And lots and lots of resort style beach wear. The main line looks very different than the Universal Standard stuff.

this is so interesting....while i'm excited about the different size models and extended sizing....from a business perspective, I'm wondering what universal standard gets from this....and why JCrew wouldn't just do extended sizes without the collaboration

Delurked, I’m also curious if the sizes are cut on usual J Crew lines (especially the smaller sizes that match the usual J Crew range) and how closely they worked with Universal Standard on fit vs just concept. I don’t give much credence to the “designing for large sizes is hard” bs but it would be cool to see some insider insight on how they actually do a collaboration like this.

Im somewhat intrigued. JCrew has been usually a hard pass for me because I don’t feel my body shape matches their clothing well (especially my shoulder line). These fits are more inclusive and I hope it’s successful for them. I may forever have a bias against everlane and how long they held out adding some higher sizing.

Universal Standard, the brand that makes really excellent clothing for larger sizes, has a collab with J Crew! Sizes XXS - 5X.

https://www.jcrew.com/womens_f.....andard.jsp

I also noticed that J Crew has added models wearing some of their clothes in three different sizes, not just for this collab.

There’s really been a sea change towards size inclusivity this year. Everlane is using models at diverse sizes, too. I hope it’s paying off in better sales for these companies.
