Wow, I'll bet United would love to be able to roll back the clock; just like "United Breaks Guitars", this incident is not going to fade away.

While I agree United behaved atrociously in allowing security guards to manhandle a paying passenger who declined to go along with a "request", it seems to me a number of parties bear responsibility for the way this incident escalated to the point where a passenger suffered injuries.

When the security guards were moving in to forceably remove the doctor from his seat, someone--a United crew member, a security guard, or even a passenger--should have stepped in to halt the escalation. Emotions were obviously high and everyone needed a chance to cool off. Using force in a confined space isn't a good idea unless there is an immediate danger to the safety of others. Choosing resistance also means bearing some responsibility for your own safety, as well as for others, when you are in tight quarters. United definitely mishandled the situation, but the doctor and the other passengers also could have behaved better.

All airlines have service issues, but, unless the issues involve my safety, I'm inclined to pick my airline based on factors other than expectations of good customer service. I've had stellar experiences on supposedly not-so-good carriers (including Air Canada!) as well as difficult ones on the so-called "good" guys like Cathay Pacific. It truly depends on the personnel involved and the situation--and my own reactions and needs at the time. The last time Mr G and I agreed to be bumped from an Air Canada international flight we requested, and received, passes to the International lounge, $800 each, and two business class seats on the later flight. We had to spend the day in Heathrow, but it wasn't a terrible experience even if we had been looking forward to getting home earlier. It's just how travel works these days.

I'm just going to say that I don't understand why that doctor decided to allow himself to be dragged off the plane. I'm sure they would have calmly escorted him off if he had behaved like an adult.

Lisa, I hear where you're coming from and I agree with you. The situation was handled horribly but you always, ALWAYS follow the instructions of airport and airline personnel. Not doing so will end badly 100% of the time. There's a time and a way to register your disapproval, and flatly refusing to get out of your seat isn't it.

United will pay dearly for their poor decision-making, but I sure don't want fellow passengers on my plane that think this is the way to protest.

As for the leggings incident, that was a nonevent. Non-rev passengers have an entirely different dress code to follow.

Thank you Ryce for posting the article on victim blaming. United Airlines handled the situation poorly. I have been asked by airlines if I will give up my seat. I have been offered compensation that exceeded what UA offered.
Once when we were flying back from Hawaii they offered us cash (I can't remember the amount) and 2 tickets to anywhere in the US or NA. We turned them down because DH had to be somewhere for work. That was fine and they offered the compensation to someone else. I think the airline was Air Canada.
I think it also happened in Europe.

I read about this a few days ago, watched the video and oh my. I'm not sure that I've ever flown UA, but I'm unlikely to do so now. :-)

Sorry to hear about your Air Canada experience, Angie. I've never had a problem with them. I don't fly all over the world, but we do go to the UK on a regular basis and I prefer British Airways for that. Don't fly Thomas Cook; one time we did that and they RAN OUT OF WATER. I'm not even joking. There was no water to wash your hands after using the toilet! Plus they ran out of milk, so I couldn't feed my one-year-old (because you can't bring your own milk onto the plane, of course) -- the flight attendant ended up giving me about twenty of those tiny milk containers that you put in your tea. Lol.

*very big chuckle @ Xtabay*

Nodding along to Ryce's last two paragraphs. You are a wise lady.

It sounds like the media got the info correct. The story has been all over MNSBC so I caught more of it. A few thoughts:

Yes. The situation was extremely poorly handled by United on every level. CEO too (he might resign). No one had the decency to calmly sit down with the doctor to speak to him. United only apologized today. Too little too late.

The reaction of the doctor did not phase me. Emotional escalation was a natural reaction here. He looked absolutely shocked, and I'm not judging his reaction negatively. His stress levels were high, and who knows how he feels about flying. It could be a stressful setting for him (it is for most).

Isabel, YES. I've been bumped off a flight WITH a confirmed and paid for booking - but BEFORE I boarded the plane. WHAT A MESS United made of this.

I have a flown A LOT - and still do. We try to fly Alaska locally in the US. They aren't fabulous, but the best of the bunch. I fly Delta/KLM to the Netherlands to see my Dad because it's a direct flight from Seattle. Again, not fabulous, but worth it for a direct and cheap flight.

We had extremely bad experiences with Air Canada, and I can't see us flying with them again because of it. Always a shame when that happens.

The best airlines in my experience are: Emirates, Cathy Pacific and Singapore Airlines. Nothing comes close to their level of service, organization and comfort on the flights. Their staff are immaculate and very, very professional. It's an absolute pleasure to fly with them.

I don't blame the guy a bit. When people are getting treated badly (aka getting "screwed over"), is it really a surprise when they don't respond well, their profession or occupation notwithstanding? I'm not saying I would have done what he did (too scared of getting injured), but the "flight or fight" impulse can go either way under stressful conditions.

United lost so much stock value over this incident (like $255 million), that they probably could have bought a jet for each person they threw off.

I don't know - I kind of want to be treated by a physician that doesn't accept the status quo. I can imagine that someone like Bennet Omalu (the physician who persevered to prove that NFL players were suffering CTE) might not be sweetly cooperative in a similar situation. To be honest, I'm not sure I would either. Perhaps a disconnect in cultural cues may have contributed to this situation - who knows?

Lisap - some thoughts on "blaming the victim" in this:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....5a227cb942

The only acceptable way to handle this would be to continue to sweeten the offer until they got volunteers. Bumping the last people who booked would be a poor choice since those folks would have paid the highest fare, and likely are frequent flyers with elite status.

Personally I hate flying Southwest. Because I am woman of small stature, inevitably the largest person boarding the plane chooses the seat next to mine. It really is infuriating that the seats are too small for half of the adult population, but I do get weary of being the person whose personal space is encroached on.

I agree that United was ridiculous in how they handled this, and in how little compensation they offered. I have no sympathy for them. As for the doctor, this was bizarre, but as someone else noted, there was nowhere for this situation to go but to escalate. United screwed up big-time (not to mention the fake "apology" that came later).

I heard someone on the radio say that this whole thing could have been avoided if they hadn't seated the passengers. I agree. People were on the plane and seated.

If the airline can't plan well enough to move their employees around, that shouldn't be the problem of a paying customer who is already seated on the plane.

Who knows if the man was beligerent or not. It doesn't matter. They incited him. He paid for his seat and was in it. To me, it is akin to my going into a store, buying a washing machine, having it put into my rent a truck, I get into the driver's seat and then having a store manager come out and saying , " we're taking it because one of our employees needs it more". And then forcibly taking it from me and pushing me aside when I protest. Though this , of course, is much worse.

I have also been kicked off a flight ( 2 x ) after being given a boarding pass and a seat assignment. But I never boarded. It all happened before anyone boarded. Once was to keep a family together ( I had NO problem with that one and I had no strict time line ) and the other time was strictly overbooking.

I found this horrific. There are ways to negotiate. And I guarantee that if the ante was good enough , there would have been volunteers. It has been confirmed that this man was indeed a doctor and did have patients to see.

One time, in Chicago, a flight that I was waiting for was overbooked and needed 7 people to volunteer. At first no one did. The offers kept getting better and better. In the end, they offered $2500 and a round trip ticket anywhere in the constinenal US along with a night in Chicago and dinner - flight the next day. Then they ended up with TOO many volunteers. LOL

Oh, no. There's something off about the doc. Frankly, I think if he spoke quietly with the voice of arrogant supercilious reason, he would have gotten them to find someone else.

But that makes what they did more egregious. When a person is not doing so hot and thus getting upset, panicky, and you heap more demands on when they aren't coping in the first place, you worsen their condition when you should be helping someone in distress. It's like honking at a little old lady driver - don't do it unless you want her wrapped around a telephone pole.

I just got home from my hair and pedi appt. The pedicurist and I talked about this. She said she would not allow herself to be dragged out. It would be too embarassing. If they selected her she would get up and leave on her own. Exactly - it's not a 60s sit in. I would be saying very rude as well as snarky things as I was escorted out.

I just took some s**t on Facebook for commenting like I did here, above. The woman who gave it to me (face palm emoji plus a "I cannot believe you are victim blaming here" diatribe) is a young millennial, I think (the daughter of the guy I am friends with and whose page it was) . I still think the doctor who allowed himself to be dragged out of a plane is a bit questionable . Stand up for god's sake and act like the professional you allegedly are, instead of acting like it's a 60's campus protest. I get his anger, frustration dilemma. Still - Who does this? Am I totally losing my compassion and understanding ?

My favorite airline was Turkish Air. However, any flight on them pretty much goes through Istanbul, which I wouldn't recommend anymore. But on a short hop where a US airline can barely give you something to drink, TA would give you a lovely snack such as a cheese sandwich, olives, and a fresh tomato salad.

My favorite US airline is Southwest. They make no bones about their lack of amenities, but the crews tend to make the mundane fun.

Back in the day, our flight on United was cancelled. They put us on a flight the next day in first class. They carved prime rib in the aisle, and made ice cream sundaes. I was the only woman in first class without a fur!

All my horrible flying experiences have been with Delta (let's just say, they don't always know what to do with a medical kiddo who has to have meds on a flight...), United is our first choice usually, so I'm pretty shocked about how this was handled. Wow.

Off topic a bit, but has anyone flown United really recently? I always loved their generous gate-checking policies, I could gate-check a car seat and a stroller, but I heard something recently that made me wonder if that changed. We have a flight coming up.

I WAS SHOCKED AT FIRST.

That said, I wonder if we are getting the whole story. It sounds fishy to me.

I have been thrown off KLM after having a confirmed seat because it was overbooked. But they never issued a boarding pass so I couldn't board the plane. IT WAS HECTIC, and I was very angry and stressed. I managed to sweet talk my way onto another flight with my baggage. I was one of the lucky ones.

Terrible customer service, aggressive and completely not necessary. I have also now read that they required the 4 seats for United staff. The practice of overbooking is dreadful. A PR nightmare to be sure.

Yes, this was handled terribly. I guess I don't understand why they overbook flights. I know it is done all the time and must usually work out but just doesn't make sense to me. I think they do usually kick off the last few to check in, at least that is what happened to my husband and me one time (we weren't actually the last to check in but the agent who checked us in to our first flight didn't check us for the connecting flight so we didn't have seats) and we were made to get off. Obviously we didn't protest quite as much as this guy :) Anyway, what a bad situation for everyone.

I read this in the news today morning.....so it made its way here too. Very poorly handled. This could've been done in a much better way if 4 passengers were simply told the flight was overbooked and they would be accommodated on the next flight *before* everyone boarded. Or if the last 4 passengers who were checking in were told the same (since the crew would know by then that the flight was full and overbooked).

It's outrageous. Paying passenger should not be treated this way ANYWHERE

Extremely poor PR for United, and on the face of it, outrageous. I wonder if there is more going on behind the scenes though.
