I often try the smaller boutiques in Ballard and Fremont. Dream and Bliss in Fremont are good. I'm not sure the name of the ones in Ballard but there are a few. Also, as someone else mentioned, I often layer my J Crew sweater with a Target tshirt and ballet flats and gives very common items a new look. A couple long beeded necklases from Target and you would be surprised how different that average J Crew sweater looks.

my favorite online clothing stores are:

shopstyle.com (not a store, but a search tool)

bluefly.com & yoox.com for nice pieces

forever21.com, modcloth.com and even delias.com for cheaper but trendy & fun pieces

Two suggestions for a more unique look:

1) Often it's not about the individual pieces of clothing, but how to put them together. E.g., Angie turned me on to the look of layering a sleeveless v-neck top over a long-sleeve shirt. At least one of the pieces will be multi-colored or patterned. At first this sounded really weird to me, but then I tried it and LOVED it. So now I'm layering pieces that I got from run-of-the-mill stores in new ways, and the look is totally unique and striking.

2) Browse classy, high-end consignment stores (e.g. Fury in Seattle). I always find something unexpected and fun, often from a store/brand I hadn't heard of before, sometimes even a designer piece, at a great price. This doesn't work for "basics" (at least not for me), but for those fun additions that you can combine with existing basics.

Have fun!

H&M and Zara’s quality can be shockingly bad, but then so can items made by Marc Jacobs and Anthropologie. In fact I'm constantly appalled by the quality at Anthropologie and the prices they dare to charge for their items. I’ve bought items from H&M and Zara that are 4 plus years old and still going strong – their quality absolutely fine and better than the odd designer piece I’ve bought. You need to develop a discerning eye when it comes to quality, and you need to be lucky. If you like funky items with an edge at a price, you can’t over look these top European chain stores.

I have never been to an H&M. I did pass one by in Chicago though. I know you talk about it a lot and from what I have seen the clothing looks darling. I have stayed away because I thought the quality wasn't the best. Am I wrong?

Try tulle clothing on-line and get yourself to an H&M or Zara. And there's always eBay.

I need more options! I love unique clothing. I typically don't shop at Banana, Gap, J Crew etc. because they bore me. I love Anthropologie type boutiques. Does anybody know of any great sites that sell quality, unique clothing that is not outrageously expensive. I am in my 30's so something not too girly.
