Bumping my update to the original post, with info from Uniqlo CS and my sizing experience (petite long-torsoed rectangle shape, size 2 shoulders, size 0 bust, size 4 waist = size S in regular Heattech tops).

I have heat tech for an underlayer in my frigid country, and I find that it does indeed keep me warm, without overheating me when I'm indoors with it on. I love it for that reason! I run warm to begin with (thanks menopause) so I can't bear to be over heated. Silk and heat tech long underwear only for me!

I may own more HeatTech than anyone in North America. In my experience, it runs small and clingy -- by design. It's meant as an underlayer. (Those pictures you see in the subway of Charlize Theron standing on a ski slope wearing just a HeatTech long-sleeved tee should not be taken as realistic.)

If you want it to be strictly an underlayer, go for your usual size. If you plan to wear it visibly -- this is particularly possible with the "Extra Warm" variety, which is thicker and thus less clingy -- size up at least once.

Bonus tip: I bring a HeatTech with me when I want to test whether a "tee shirt bra" is truly invisible (and the right size, with no overspillage). The clinginess of non-sized-up HeatTech is shows every lump and bump, so if a bra does a good job beneath a HeatTech, it's a good bet.

Thanks everyone! I feel much better knowing that others have returned online Heattech orders before after trying on. I've never shopped Uniqlo online, only in-store where my experience matched Diana's. I ordered both sizes to try and hopefully one of them will work.

I own Heattech tee in two sizes. They somehow fit similarly. I guess it is because they are very stretchy. I bet the small won't be too big for that reason.

Oh that's good to know that you can return it after all! I stand corrected. I've never bought it online, only in the store where you are not allowed to open the packages.

I didn't buy clothing in Japan. A lot of things there did not go up to my size! (I think I'm like an XL in Japanese uniqlo.)

MaryA, that really helps. I had bought some things in Japan and had to size up there to a medium too.

Joy, From my experience, Uniglo sizing in Japan runs smaller than in the US. I bought my first Heattech shirts while on a trip to Japan (before they even sold in the US) and ordered a medium. I normally wear a small in US clothing. I tried an online order a year later and the medium was way too big (and I had no trouble returning it) - I had to go down to a small. I continue to wear a small in their clothing unless I want an oversized fit. Hope this helps.

KL, I ordered a size wrong the first time, tried it on, and returned it by mail (same packagin kkards shows). I'm same size as you (bust) and needed S. The sleeves are long enough but don't show past the wrist; the length is quite long/good for tucking (5'5").

Heat tech is usually not returnable because of how it's packaged (in sealed plastic packages). In the stores they have samples hanging so you can look at them but not try them on.

I haven't tried any of the recent season ones but in general they run tts. Uniqlo's website has a lot of specific garment measurements if you click on the sizing info for each item. They are very stretchy so multiple sizes will prob all fit ok. I personally size up on their tees but that's bc I have a problem with fitted tees rolling up on my hips.

Their return policy:

"Items must be in their original purchase condition and include the original product packaging, with all tags and labels still attached."

So it all depends on how the item is packaged. I guess I can still order two sizes tonight (want to grab an Ines de la Fressange shirt before it sells out) and decide when they arrive...

Has anyone tried the recent season of Heattech (not Heattech Extra Warm) tees from Uniqlo? I usually wear XS at Uniqlo and other stores but haven't tried Heattech in person and have heard that it runs smaller than their other clothes. I want it for layering, so normally that would be fine--I'm sure the XS will technically fit--BUT I hate shirts that are too short to be tucked into low-rise jeans on a longish torso. The XS measures just under 22" in length, and I'd be more comfortable with the extra inch that the size S gets me. But will size S fit the rest of me--32A bust, petite with short arms (despite the long torso)?

Have been going back and forth with my online order, I can't decide! I'm worried about ordering multiple sizes to try because in-store Heattech is sold in sealed packaging.

UPDATE: I ordered both XS and S, and also emailed customer service about the return policy. Unfortunately, they told me that the Heattech tees are non-returnable once the packaging is opened. Seems silly and inconsistent to me :/ I took a chance on the size S and it fit, though. That's consistent with my camisole size in the BP camis, for example.
