I'm with Anna...I too wear scrubs to work, and I work full-time 8 hour shifts, which means I never have enough days to wear my lovely things. However, this doesn't really limit my wardrobe, especially my shoe wardrobe! I have been thinking lately that maybe simplifying my wardrobe would be a good idea, sticking more with classics, etc. would be a good idea. However, am still in the planning stages of things ;)
I find that having a uniform frees me up to buy stuff I truly love without the restraint of considering having to wear it to work. I have a pretty large wardrobe but I have been downsizing a bit lately.

Well, I have about 150 pieces - including coats and shoes, maybe 100 not counting those. I play favorites at times, but really do like to wear different things. If you like to repeat and are comfortable with that, maybe you should save up your dollars for the future. I'm with Anna - I like to have fun with what I can wear on my days off.

I wear scrubs to work and have a large wardrobe. I don't like to wear the same things over and over again in my off days. My off days are my only chance to have fun with fashion.

Good points Mo-- I guess for me I don't know where the balance is. I hate it when clothes don't get worn often, but at the same time I sometimes feel self conscious that when I do go out (with friends I don't see everyday, or with the SOs family, ect) that they always see me in the same outfit because I only have as many as I truly need, which is only a couple. Yeah, I will mix and match, but with less basic pieces I tend to find a combo I prefer and like to wear it the "right" way. Also, while the SO and I don't often go "fancy" places, he frequently expresses that he appreciates it when a lady dresses special (not necessarily "up" but differently than everyday) for date nights. I'm still trying to figure out how to pull that one off without having a ton of things for a once a week occasion.

Oh, boy, I wish it limited my buying! I think both Annagybe and I have lots of clothes and we are uniform wearers. Cocolion, too!
I find that my threshold for repeats is quite low compared to most people. Yes, I only dress in 'outfits' maybe 2 or 3 times a week on average, but I usually am looking to do something just a little different from the time before. This is almost subconscious for me.
Anyway, I would certainly spend on loungewear if you've neglected it. Also any capsule that you do wear regularly, even if in uniform (gear, dog walking, whatever).
I do get a trend item or two every season. I figure, I am dressing for me on my off time and want to play around with it.

I've recently been notified by the company that organizes my contracts that they are considering sending me on a job where the employer requires staff to wear uniforms. They would provide a uniform allowance, and it would likely be a 6-month stint.

Originally my plan for most of my wardrobe budget for this season was to use it to update my smart casual work wardrobe.

However, if I end up on this contract I will have to rethink my plan because I don't want to be buying several seasons ahead of what I can wear. It also frees up a lot of wardrobe budget. I definitely don't want to go overboard though, because I can only wear so much on my 2 or 3 days off a week and during evenings---- I already spend a lot of my weekend and evening free time working out, in casual clothing at home, or hiking and fishing.

So I guess the questions in this post are two-fold:

1) Should I save my wardrobe allowance for the season for future seasons? Update my gear and casual wardrobe? Invest in some loungewear? Go ahead and pick up the trendy and smart casual pieces?

2) For those of you that wear uniforms to work, how does it affect what and how much you buy and wear? Do you have a very limited wardrobe? Or do you buy and just wear each outfit less? Does it make you feel like you have less opportunity to be fashionable?

In the past work has always been my opportunity to wear nicer stylish clothing, and I only had to save the very trendy/casual or "date" type clothing for weekends. Now I am concerned there may be no point in shopping this season since I don't know that I'll have a chance to get much use out of it.
