Wow, such a wonderful lot of fabulous ideas. Each of you really ‘got’ both the challenge of seasonal changes and the aesthetic of the occasions where the garment would be worn.

Kkards, Angie, Vix, Christina F., suntiger, Classically Casual: thank you for the visuals and commentary about your selections.

I am currently searching for non-black, medium-weight, somewhat refined outerwear. Preferably mid-to-full length.

Again THANK YOU to each of you. I am delighted to see so many replies and spot-on suggestions.

If you wear leather, a leather trench style coat is perfect for those temperatures, or leather jacket. I found some I wear a lot at a consignment store that was going out of business when the owner retired. The black one is most dressy but a light tan/beige is a close second. One in faux leather would take rain too

This is mine for that temp, since if its mild its raining where I am! Otherwise, a blazer or maxi cardigan.

Hi Sheila --

As another PNW person -- do you want this coat to be waterproof, very water-resistant, kinda water-shedding or...?

Hooded or no?

And are you an umbrella person or no?

I ask because IME a lot of the cute colored trenches are cotton or something along those lines and they just sop up spring rains. And they rarely have hoods.

I do have a potential rec, but be warned it looks a bit dressier in the stock photos than it is IMO....

Cole Haan packable raincoats are somewhat water-resistant (better for light rain than downpowers) and come out every year in a bunch of colors. [Which means you can find them on sale or clearance a lot, too!] It's not a super-breathable fabric IYKWIM about technical fabrics vs non-tech ones.

My version is the Signature Back Bow -- in pale pink -- bought for spring use + travel to sunnier climates. I really wanted something that wouldn't look out of place with bare legs (or at least toes haha). The pockets are GREAT; very secure. Zip-off hood, packable = scrunches down if you want to throw it in a bag while you're out and about + weighs almost nothing.

I wear for work, over skirts, etc.

Anyway, just a thought. Here's mine in action during while traveling in May on a day that was surprisingly cold and wet for an area that hit 80 a few days later. ;)

If you don't mind a shorter item, may I suggest a moto style jacket? I used to have a lovely one in dark blue tweed that stopped fitting me, which I loved for that kind of scenario. I now have this lighter one.

Ann Taylor usually has lovely medium weight toppers, but not right at this moment. Therefore I suggest a quick look at eBay. I have found several nice trenches there, and was happy to get them for $30 when I could only wear them a few days each year. AT has done animal prints, pastels, metallic, and other interesting textiles in trenches and single breasted knee length coats for years.

Rachy had a great suggestion , and it reminded me of a faux suede top coat I have in pale grey which gets worn once or twice a season in exactly the conditions you describe. I also agree with Brooklyn's suggestion of a ponte topper - again, I have two that are really great, easy-to-wear pieces that can easily be dressed up or down. I don't love trench coats, so I'll leave that one alone.

I am envious because I have a trench I love, and approximately two days a year when the weather is actually appropriate for it!

i have a couple of suggestions, but what works for me at 50F and what works for me at 65F are very different and i have different coats for each. also level of dressy might not be enough...
my finds are all navy, but i believe that they are avaiable in other colors..
find #1 i(jcrew boiled wool) is for 50F kind of days. not water proof, but the tight weave makes it water resistant
find #2 is days when it 50F(ish) at the low and dry...much to warm at 65F (topshop leapard)
find #3 (athleta) is for 60F(ish) days....but it also layers well, so have worn it with #1 for days that are really to predict...
find #4 (athleta rain coat) is new...planning on it for warm but rainy days...
find #5 don't own, but if i was looking for dressy, it would be high on my ists

Definitely trench coat - and there are all sorts available right now. If you are thinking spring maybe a lighter color like a pink or lilac? Or classic khaki? I have one in Ivory from Nordstrom last spring and love it.

I have been searching for some kind of outerwear to wear in ‘bridge’ season — think Spring (and most of Summer) in Seattle.

It needs to be warm enough to work in 50-65 F weather.
Dressy enough to wear over a dress or refined slacks outfits to church or a concert at Benaroya.

NOT Black.
Obviously NOT a Puffer.
NOT Denim.
NOT knitwear.
Must have pockets.

The only other idea I have is a Trench Coat.

Any ideas?
