I have come to equate your style with berry tones, FashIntern. They are signature, and you wear them well. The accents of ice pink are fab with berry tones, and with the ballerina black & white you mentioned. With bits of blue, white and green in the mix, I'd say you've found your palette! You can create both contrasting and tonal outfits just as your mood strikes you.

Black wardrobe items effectively toughen up a look, so Rachy makes a good suggestion of popping your "tough items" into a collection that you can draw from in future.

La Ped, I like your logic!

Bijou, omg, you know me well to see that I want to “want to dress to impress but not look like you are trying too hard.” I’m working on getting the athletic look back. I just showed my PT this pic from 30 years ago. He zoomed in and said “wow, look at those quads”. I get that I probably won’t get all the way back to this, but we are working on my lower body. Btw, the warmly dressed upper half with bare legs is because I was about to walk across the Wattenmeer from a North Sea island to the mainland. It’s chilly, but pants could get wet and make you colder. In the meantime, until we build up those muscles, there is fashion to get the athletic look.

Yes, "funky" is good! I see a more 70s take on boho in your style vs typical 60s "flower child" -- and funk is disco's edgy, RATE cousin, right?

Your style evolution is so fun to see. Like Jenni, I think you wear shorter dresses, shorts and trousers well, as they give you a very natural and athletic look. #5 is a stand out, as it has a relaxed elegance that suits you, an outfit to wear when you want to dress to impress but not look like you are trying too hard. I find head to toe tonal brights hard to pull off too. I like how you mix and match your wardrobe items to make them work for you.

Dang, Synne, that’s a great compliment. You even managed to put my stubbornness in a positive light—thanks!

Suz, good point about the cross-seasonality of these colors. I hadn’t thought about it, but I see the pix I posted go all the way from shorts & lightweight top to puffy, cardi, and scarf. Glad you’re also picking up on the “boho”, by whatever name we call it.

Sal, your wiws are often instructive for me because just what you mentioned—the long lines and drapiness. I know in my head that they work for me, but your outfits often demonstrate it.

Rachylou, you are the punk pro. Great to hear your seal of approval (or for punks, is “disapproval” the highest honor?)

Suntiger, I don’t get along well with expectations for girls/women that go along with pink, so am surprised how much I suddenly enjoy wearing it.

La Ped, you are right on the mark about which meanings of “boho” I want to avoid and which I want to use. Maybe my version is “funky responsibility”.

Jenni, switching over from old terms once they are found to be somehow discriminatory or the like is always tricky. I agree with you about the socks in 5–I got the low contrast right, but grey is really not a good color match for me, thank goodness, lol.

I appreciate all the love for #5–much better than a snarky 18 year old Appreciate the comments on new directions.

Agree with the "boho" comments. You do already have, and HAVE to maintain the artistic eclectic part of your signature style. It is very cool. I get what you are saying about wanting RATE. To me, you already have this, the way you mix fabrics, patterns, use vintage purses and shoes, disregard trends when it so suits you, and rock your own thing. Your colour palette is perfect for you.

Out of interest re La Ped’s take on the word boho, we have discussed that on the forum previously. There are those whose original way of dressing that was who do get upset about the theft, if you like, of their aesthetic. But I think most of us understand what Carla means by suggesting the word in relation to your style? It does seem to have a degree of fit, but maybe you could find a different word or phrase you prefer.
Like the others I like pic 5, though I would personally lose the coloured socks. I also like pic 7 with the fern or feather shorts, and particularly like pic 3. I think the length of the dress in 3 with the blue tights and the loafers really suits you. Good legs!
Future plans sound good.

I see a cohesive palette and lots of silhouette play becoming signature to your style. The pale pinks and black/white patterns both seem like natural ways to branch out from berry shades, and you can get away with adding lots of pattern/texture when your colors all play nicely together. Another fan of #5 here, and also #3.

I struggle with the term boho because I associate it with a lot of things I don’t like: skimpy festival wear, appropriated indigenous designs, etc. But you could maybe sub in a term like “eclectic artisan” to pinpoint some of the things you gravitate towards — locally made, vintage, patina of wear, etc. — if boho feels off to you.

Have to say I really see things coming together in a definite direction. It’s a good plan. Also: I think of red, black and white as ‘classically’ RATE/punk. And #5 IS especially flattering. The ‘fern’ shorts also strike me as particularly spiffy

Thanks TG! That compliment means a lot coming from you, because your wardrobe is so neatly & carefully planned. I appreciate the love for that outfit too. I was feeling fine and fly in it, thinking the movement in the skirt was wonderful, until I asked my son to take a pic and he said I looked “like a librarian”. He did not mean wise or classy, lol. I like your idea of toughening it a bit with a leather jacket, will try the suede one when it’s warm enough for the skirt again. Unfortunately, I can’t wear the black combat boots with midi skirts; the buckles and the hooks for laces do not play nicely with hems. These short red ones do work with it though.

Carla, I’m glad you picked up on the connection between b/w patterns and the RATE bit. I meant to highlight that more in my write-up. I think of the pink & black or pink & b/w as sort of a “leather & lace” kind of thing, iykwim. I have indeed thought of the boho side of my look, will have to pull up the threads about it from last year. It’s interesting to think about the interplay between the different kinds of RATE.
ETA here they are:

https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....-your-ways

Thanks nemosmom and Nikki! Cranberry and pink is one of those combos that seems like it should’ve been obvious, but it wasn’t. I guess that’s why I found the tonal matching idea so compelling.

Kkards, I did start working last week, was surprised at myself that I wore entirely familiar outfits/pieces (the last pic here is my second day at work). But no need to worry about environmental norms now—Covid tracing sent everybody home, so we are doing the training online now. Germany’s privacy laws means we aren’t even using cameras. But I hope to change jobs a couple times this year, and expect I will have questions/thoughts about norms.

Thanks for stopping by, Jennie Hunt!

Btw, this is the post that kicked off my berry exploration. I note at the bottom of it that I posted about it in the forum when it came out. I haven’t bought exactly the pieces I posted about there, but I’d say I’ve accomplished what I set out to. https://youlookfab.com/2018/03.....of-colour/

Since you’re not a fan of acquiring ‘new’, could I suggest digging deeper into your black and white items for the edge they provide? This might get you the ‘R’ in RATE. The ‘rough’ isn’t just about wear and tear/patina but also about edginess and toughness - which I believe you equate with resilience?

Have you ever thought about exploring a bohemian aesthetic? It seems to mesh more with your ideas of eschewing trends and recycling your wardrobe as well as your penchant for enjoying visible wear and tear. The ways you style your hair sends a boho massage as well. If you want to chase RATE, you might want to experiment with some different ways to style your hair.

Totally agree with TG about #5. Would look *chef’s kiss* with the combat boots.

Great plan FI, well thought out. Your colour additions will blend perfectly with your current palette, so it will just expand your options and combinations. Great revelations about where you want to go in terms of silhouette and adding some RATE elements.

Can I say that #5 is probably my favourite outfit I've ever seen on you - something about it just harmonizes so perfectly with your natural look - and I can imagine this toughened up with combat boots or a leather jacket, to incorporate your RATE elements? Would be super retro-90s-cool. Just a thought!

Theory:
I want to get back to the R in RATE in several ways.
1. I always like to be able to trace out what came from where. The same is true with my clothes: patina and a little bit of wear on my clothes is better than “ohh, shiny-new!” Not entirely worn-out, of course, but I think it’s great that one shoulder on my leather aviator jacket shows I used to carry a backpack on my right shoulder, for example.
2. I’m getting back to slightly tougher styles like my combat boots. I want to be careful though, so it doesn’t look like a costume. Part of that has to do with where I am. Those boots work well in Berlin, but would start the chatter where I grew up, so I doubt I’ll take them when I visit family.
3. I like to have one thing that’s a little bit jarring, whether it’s a different color, or something much more textured than the rest, etc.

Now for praxis:
Color
To decide on my palette, I looked at my wardrobe, what I enjoyed wearing and what felt wrong. I realized that my main color was more of a family of related berry shades, my secondary is blue, and red and green are accent colors for me. That was when I first started here, and those colors still work well for me.

For the last few years, most of my style moves have been around wanting to wear very berry shades from head to toe. Angie’s tonal matching outfits just seemed so sophisticated, I had to do that. These days, it isn’t a conscious thing, but if I look at wiw, there is at least one raspberry, cranberry, blackberry, blueberry item every day. Surprisingly, now that I have the items to dress head-to-toe in tonally matching colors, I don’t do it. It’s too much “same” for me, and I’m likely to break it up with a coordinating accessory, like my blue gloves.

Two changes crept into my color story late last summer.
1 I’ve gathered a small capsule of ice pink items—my puffy vest, NYDJ pink skinnies, “granny” cardi and a pair of workout shorts. I wear them a couple of ways: with the berry colors and red in an extension of the tonal matching, and with black. Black + pink is an old story for any ballerina, but is new for me. I haven’t worn it much, but want to work it into more outfits.

2 I also have quite a few pieces with black and white patterns. So far I wear them with bright colors for the “pow” of it. I’ve also worn them with black. I’m starting to experiment with other ways of wearing them, with darker colors and mixed with each other.

Shapes
Most of my life, winter clothing meant pants with a straight-ish leg and a banded sweater. Learning about boots, skirts, and warm tights was a revolution. Skinny pants happened while I was in a no-winter location. Coming back to a 4-seasons climate, I’m slowly getting back into other silhouettes. My “nice to buy” list includes longer toppers in several different shapes. I’m also moving in the opposite direction, tucking shirts in again after a long time of not doing it.

Footwear
I’ve been surprised to realize that most of my winter shoes / boots have a bit of a heel. Shoes I’m thinking of buying are loafers for winter and, probably sometime this year, replacements for my tall burgundy brown boots. In both of these, I’ll look for flats or heels under an inch. I need summer shoes too, am hoping for flat bracelet sandals with a little bit of sparkle.

I don’t think any of these are earth-shattering, but they are gradual evolution. Sorry the photos are not new or in perfect order—hard to remember where to reach in what order. They’re mostly to show the different color ideas, including berry everywhere, black/white patterns and how I’m working in pink.
