I'm so ready for fall. Yet it's 90+ every day. On top of that, we've had heavy smoke off and on since Sunday. It's gross.

I'm sorry people didn't show up. I've had that happen. Society has become so relaxed that people are oblivious to their own rudeness.

I'm so sorry to hear about how your party turned out and what it did to your budget. BOO. I much prefer having small dinner parties where things are predictable because people commit!

The only big party we throw is an annual pumpkin-carving, which we've had for about 20 years now. We pretty much invite everyone and then see what happens. Some years there are 40 people, some years there are 10. It's all BYOB and potluck, so it works out with relatively little planning and cash outlay. I just have to be flexible and let the night evolve as it will. But I'm never left with a lot of food (if fewer people come, there is naturally less food and drink; if more people come, there is naturally more) or feeling duped, which is really good. I hate that feeling, a lot.

I know how you feel, Anna! I throw a huge (for me) New Year's Day party. Probably at least 60 people. Last year? About half that showed up. It felt like a complete dud. And people aren't very good about RSVPing, so it isn't like I could really predict it. Luckily, with mine, I serve Southern food, so other than a few bazillion biscuits (which everyone at work ate up), I had a lot of good, freezeable leftovers. Still. So frustrating. On the plus side, I bet you have a good stockpile of delicious wine left over!

Anna - I hear ya'. I don't know why I am so surprised that every September and October we get our warmest temps of the year - because, it-happens-every-year!!! You'd think that I would plan for it, but I don't. I am scrounging around in my closet looking for warm weather clothing that I don't have - because my Summer Wardrobe is really for spring and fall temps. Very confusing!

Anna - I remember the first year that my husband and I lived in CA - we threw a New Year's Eve party and only 8 people showed up! And 2 of them were severely brain-damaged and unable to talk! Needless to say, I thought midnight was NEVER going to come! So frustrating and disappointing!

Unfortunately due to all the food and drink I bought for my party where only 1/2 the people invited showed up killed my budget. So I can't buy a refresher. Guess I'll need to get really creative with my closet.

You sound like me when I first moved to Austin. It took me awhile to get used to it, plus my body changed (I was skinny, then heavier, now I guess skinniER anyway and muscley). Here's where I landed:

I like lighter-weight jeans that can be worn with sandals or with boots. R13 and JBrand are my go-tos now that Rag and Bone has switched up their line.

Interesting tops that can be layered are really important. McQ by Alexander McQueen and B by Barbara Bui make some fun ones I've seen.

I also do linen but I don't think you're getting over 90 now?

Will you go out and buy a couple of new things to liven up your possibilities? That would work for me, but I wonder if you are really in a different place psychically with purchasing now that it has been so long. I worry that we (and definitely I) have put a lot of pressure on you to make the next purchase something Incredible! Fabulous! Uber Anna! Maybe it just needs to be fun and useful. I think Angie has a point, and it could help you through this extra long summer.

BTW, of course I am in LA and headed to Seattle, and I did not bring a single pair of open-toed shoes, or shorts, or anything for summer. I'm sunk. I will be sweltering in flannel, jeans, booties, and leather.

I hear you. I'm over my shorts. Was over them last month already. I wasn't going to buy any this season, for same reasons you mention, and I caved and bought a pair on sale in August. (Part of my problem is I couldn't even fit into some of my shorts wardrobe--bleah.) But anyway, back to the issue at hand: do you have any skirts you can wear bare-legged? Or dresses? I'm thinking things that you would normally wear in fall with tights and boots.

Hmmmmm, Target $30 super distressed boyfriend jeans and scissors? I love my non-distressed boyfriend jeans that I just got from there and they had super distressed versions that weren't me. We're different body types, but I originally saw them on Kelly at Alterations Needed and she's much more your lovely hourglass shape than my IT shape. And $30 isn't bad for a cheap quick jean fix.

So in Seattle we have a long warm summer that is extending into mid September. Yesterday we were in the 80's, mostly this week in the mid 70's and back into the 80's again this weekend. This summer I bought very little for the season, given normally it's pretty short. Basically, the culottes and white leather basketball shorts. I know Angie is loving it, but I'm struggling. I have tons of ideas for true fall wear with my existing closet, but can't implement it.
Plus the warm, dry weather doesn't portend well for the upcoming ski season.
