I feel the same way and I think you answered it for me. I didn't buy anything at the NAS either except a bra. I think we are missing that wardrobe refresh that makes you excited about your clothes and the new season. Also, the weather hasn't changed much so I haven't been able to wear any sweaters yet. I guess a shopping trip is in order. I've just put it off because the stuff I'm really excited about is very high end and not in budget this year. This sweater reminds me of you but very spendy.

I have refound my love for turtlenecks. I purchased one for j crew last year and wore it to death. This year I have purchased more, tissue tees, sweaters, and short sleeve. I really like the covered up top half with the bare skin above booties look.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone! It was just such a weird feeling for me. But then I realized I didn't shop for tops during NAS, and I hadn't been shopping much at all in general lately, which is not a bad thing. I loved my summer tops enough this year that I was thinking I was just in a really good place in general with all aspects of my closet. But when I wore an outfit with a basic black long-sleeved tee under a jacket and then went to take off my jacket when it warmed up, the tee felt drab and shapeless. Then when I went to dress for another occasion, I tried on one button-front top after another to wear under a particular jacket, and the buttons gaped or the tail of the shirt poufed out from the hem of the jacket, or something just looked and felt wrong about each look. That was when I realized my knit top collection needed a little updating. The good thing is the old tees that are feeling tired can go into my ranch capsule.

Yesterday I took a little cruise through the shops. Struck out totally in some of my old standbys like Anthro (not a thing in there appealed to me), but found THREE nice black tops in a boutique I have had success with in the past. All knits, all long sleeves. Each one with something distinctive to it. I brought home all three to try on with my closet. I could see keeping them all if they all suit me as well as they seemed to, because I get a lot of mileage out of my black tops. They are that elusive combination of somewhat basic but with a twist -- the cool-weather equivalent of the cross-neck LNA tee that I wore so much this summer. I'll post pics later.

I also wandered into Nieman Marcus Last Call and found a couple of cashmere sweaters on deep discount that came home with me. One is a silk/cashmere blend, and very lightweight to the point of sheerness and requires a layer underneath, but I love the colors so I'm going to try it out. The other is a star print Equipment cashmere sweater that I adore. It's not itchy in the least, and it's not too heavy or overly warm, which is good for me these days. I'm almost positive that one is a keeper.

So I may have solved my problem in one shopping trip! I'll update with photos later.

I'm joining all the voices of commiseration. I'm not loving my tops either, but I have nothing but knits and am actually *wanting* those silk shirts. My new look obsession is a low-buttoned silk placket-front shirt, tied at the waist or semi-tucked. High-rise trousers are disrupting my wardrobe!

Great thread, and wonderful advice from la Pedestrienne.

Wow, what La Ped said.
I have way too many tops and somehow can't seem to decide which ones to cull.
I think I must drift off of them but a lot still seem useful if I needed it to be a support act under a blazer, or contrasting color, especially for more formal business situations , which are less common but more important when they come up. But then the " basics" can't stand alone in siutsiins where I can't wear a topper.
So I tend to hoard rayon drapeyvT's and some shell tops, then need longer structured stand- alone tops.

I may also just be more fickle than I realize-- maybe I actually get " over" items that I expected to use for many seasons but then prefer the look of a new top , but I don't hate the old one, so I'm stuck.

Ah, the top that's easy but special enough to dress up a pair of jeans: the holy grail for almost every woman. It must flatter your face and upper body, as it is the only thing your dining companions really see when you are seated, so interesting necklines, great colors and details are important. La Pedestrienne's idea really made me think. It's so true that a few trendy tops can lift your wardrobe and mood out of the doldrums each season, but finding those tops that suit you will always be tricky, I think. Last year I bought a short, boxy navy cashmere sweater with elbow sleeves and 3 stripes of deep blue sequins across the chest. The boxy proportions, muted sparkle, luxe comfort and wearable color made it an instant favorite. With inky velveteen jeans and hair-calf booties, I felt just-dressy-enough for most evenings out. That outfit is still in rotation--I will probably wear it to a casual birthday party tomorrow--but I'm looking for this year's version all the time. It will take some hunting and luck, but something will click eventually. For you, too, I'm sure. Aren't there are a couple of dark, glittery sweaters at Zara now that might work for you?

Janet, you're singing my song. I can only commiserate.

I had on a long sleeve top yesterday, in my favorite orange color no less, and by day's end, all I wanted to do was snatch it off and stomp on it, I was so irritated with the same old boring look.

I was ready to overturn my bureau drawers and chuck all the basics. I may still set fire to the lot of them...

Along with complete boredom with my transitional tops, I have been uninspired to shop for F/W, which is my favorite season. I love F/W clothes! But not this year. I bought nothing at NAS—there was nothing that appealed. The new silhouettes are no friend to my shape. Bleh. The only thing that I find interesting in the current silhouettes are bell sleeves/sleeve detailing. I wore bell sleeves happily in the early 90s, and am glad to have a chance to do it again.

I do like La Pedestrienne's solution. I had begun moving in that direction, and think it's definitely the way forward for me. Only recently I had seen some things that I liked at Zara, including a bell sleeved sweater, but was flummoxed by the sizing. In that particular sweater I started out ordering an L, then went to an M, then down to an S. And ended up going to a local store as well. The rest of my Zara top purchases ran the same size course. Very frustrating.

I think I'm going to give up shopping for a while.

I too am feeling uninspired by my fall top collection. It's not quite cold enough for the wool/cashmere sweaters although I'm occasionally wearing very lightweight merino wool, and I have very few shirts/blouses to work with. It's a change of season thing as others have said. I love wearing sweaters but find it tough to find lightweight transitional ones and that's what I want right now. I'm really bored with reverting to jeans, a lightweight black tneck, black boots, but that's sometimes what I do. I have bought a couple of tunic style lightweight sweaters but they aren't quite solving the overall wardrobe problem.

Janet I think you are so right that flared pants seem to demand more refined footwear, I've been noticing that too.

La Pedestrienne I think you have hit on something in saying it might be better to treat tops as statement pieces rather than basics. Or maybe some portion of one's top collection could be devoted to statement tops.

I think sometimes I want to have more great outfits in my closet than I really need and that leads to a feeling of scarcity that maybe is not real.

Suz I'm totally with you on buying up too many classic basics and finding them dull. I am actually NOT doing that this fall so much, and I got rid of a lot in my big purge, but now I keep feeling like I don't have much to wear. I used to go with "add a scarf" and somethings that works wonders but other times I am tired if doing it. Good idea to devote some of the top collection to statement pieces and some to trendy ones that get refreshed yearly. I like that idea.

I guess my answer right now is to keep browsing finds and online sites and hoping to get inspired. You'd think with all the tops shown on the various sites we could all find some good choices...:-)

I joined the Forum a year an a half ago so this is my second winter. Last winter I worked on finding pants and toppers (which was fun) but had a hard time finding the right layering tops so I resorted to wearing tees, t necks, and a couple of neutral flowy tops under my toppers which did not look fab without the topper. I told myself that during 2016 winter, my goal would be to find tops that look good with or without toppers. Our colder season will start in November and I still haven't found anything so I'm reading your great thread to find out what is working for everyone else. Thank you for starting it and thanks to everyone who is sharing their solutions.

Yikes, I've lost my answer twice now due to an unfamiliar tablet and busy surroundings today. Anyway...I was going to say I found a couple of fall refreshers that were "different" but not overly trendy. One is an a-line flannel with pockets in a soft ivory/gray color from Madewell. And other from them as well was a soft heathered forest green slight cropped knit with small side slits (I can still semi tuck in front to show my belt). I am loving both of these. One other is a blackwatch plaid flannel from llbean that is just "moody" enough not to be too classic.

I love this question! I have been struggling with not liking my clothes but also not knowing what I want instead, and have a lot of the same issues you do (hot flashes, menopausal body), although a different body shape. Reading through the suggestions helps give me some direction for where to start.

This has turned into a great thread Janet, and I will be referring back to it I think, as some nuggets here really resonated with me. I have a different issue with tops, and need to get to the bottom of it, as well.

I don't think I can add much, I was going to suggest that you have been caught up in the change of silhouette on bottom thing (which I am also struggling with a bit, if you saw my Halogen crop flare thread) at the same time we are moving to cooler weather. So we are pulling things out we knew what to do with last year, but that's feeling stale this year, even though the pieces themselves may not be.

LaPedestrienne... wise words!!

I think you've just arrived at the spot I was at about a month ago...I bet your weather is about a month behind mine too. Unfortunately, even if your mind doesn't think it's interested in a silhouette change, sometimes our eyes (and hearts, if I'm being dramatic) demand it.

I know you said you're happier with your bottoms, but I'd still take a hard look there. It could be that a new shape on bottom refreshes your tops. A new bottom shape could even force you to wear your tops differently, tucked or semi tucked or tied, etc.

Save or make note of the outfits that look fresh to you. Don't cull for "would I wear that" yet, just pull out what catches your eye. Then start looking for the commonalities.

eta: I started typing, then got called away from the computer for morning routine, and finally came back to hit post. Apologies for some of my comments missing your most recent statements.

Diana, I can do that for occasions when I'm confident I won't need to take off my jacket (and then get too cold). When I'm going to events, it's always a question of whether the AC will be cranked, or it will be crowded and stuffy. I always want to feel like I can take off my jacket without being uncomfortable or looking seasonally confused.

La Pedestrienne, YES. To everything you said.

I love prints and patterns. In fact, there are tops in my closet that I keep because I love the print even though the style is not necessarily easy for me to work with. Or they are silk and feel too special for casual daily wear. I can think of two right off the top of my head that are like this, and I've had them for probably going on a decade. I maybe wear them once a year, but I don't want to let them go. But they're also not going to be the first thing I reach for when I'm getting dressed for a day in the studio and then going to an art opening or a concert afterwards.

And then there are the basic solid or stripe tees -- they're useful, but not a lot of style quotient when I take off my jacket. So yes, you've hit the nail on the head!

can you keep wearing some of your summer tops in layered ensembles? I do this a lot by just popping a blazer or vest over them.

Thanks for the suggestions and commiserations! Yes, this was really unexpected and a little perplexing, because my summer (mostly sleeveless) top collection is in really good shape. I have a few long-sleeve tops purchased in the last year or two that I'm feeling right now, but a lot that are quite a bit older that are not quite sparking the joy when I look at them and think about what to wear.

I agree that some of this is adjusting to transitional weather, and some is the shift in silhouette. I have been wearing my flares more.

I also realized yesterday while getting dressed to go out for dinner that flares feel more inherently dressy to me than skinnies and straight legs do -- they seem to beg for more delicate or refined footwear: pointier toes, heels, etc. Stompy boots like I might wear to a rock show just don't work with those jeans (but that's what the studded cowboy boots are for, right? :-)) So I end up wanting to temper any dressier footwear with something more easy on top -- a lightweight knit but these days nothing clingy. And with wider bottoms, nothing oversized either. So I'm looking for this mysterious unicorn of fitted but not tight tops that are not cropped and not too long, that have sleeves but are not too warm, are knits but not tacky polyester, and have some bit of casual yet edgy style that appeals to me. Nothing office-y.

Crazy one, I did get a cold shoulder top with 3/4 sleeves a couple of months ago (again when it was too warm to wear it), and forgot about it until yesterday. I'll need to pull that out and play with styling it.

Dresses are an interesting idea, but they are such a hard fit for me that I have serious doubts about finding what I'm looking for, since I need things that work for really casual life. After finding YLF, I made the mistake of buying skirts and dresses and trying to wear them for my casual days but always feeling a little too dressed up. Plus, add tights and I instantly feel too fussy. I would love to find a simple yet interesting long-sleeved CASUAL dress but it's been a HEWI for years. I have the grey shirtdress I got in the spring, and I can probably get in a wear of it in the next couple of weeks, but it will soon be too cool for that.

Staysfit, you and I have opposite dressing issues! Even in my fittest days when I'm running and biking a lot, I never look like an athlete. I just have the kind of curvy, soft-ish body type that falls into the hourglass/pear category, and that's never going to change. I would like to be more at peace with it than I am, and maybe a silhouette change in current fashion that is more flattering on my body will help. However, I have come to find skinnies so easy to throw on and wear with nearly any kind of shirt and any kind of shoes or boots, that I doubt I'll give them up anytime soon. I thought about trying some of my tops tucked with a belt, but, ugh, with weight gain, I'm not sure that's my best look these days. And tucking into higher waists is not a good option for me.

I also remembered this morning that there is a really short window of time right now -- only about two weeks -- before I will be on the ranch for a month. So I'm not going to be rushing to buy a bunch of tops. Maybe I could find one or two, since I have a little down time now before I leave. Anything I buy now needs to be workable when I'm back home in December and through the winter, and likely into spring. I am not even looking at heavy sweaters these days because, well, hot flashes, so it actually simplifies things that I only want lighter weight tops and sweaters. I can always layer when it's cold, and I still have thick, warm, heavy sweaters for the days when our temps dip.

La Pedestrienne, you are calling my game.

I tend to think Janet's problems relate more to transitional season plus transitional silhouettes, but I'm definitely guilty (or is it the victim of) both situations you describe.

I buy up too many classic "basics" and then find them too dull to wear. Yet I tire of almost anything patterned (except plaids and checks and stripes) within one season and even if I still "like" it in theory and even if, technically, it is not "dated" and even if it works with newer outfit proportions...I don't like it and won't reach for it.

This -- alas -- can also hold true of items with an unusual cut as the "element of interest" -- though these can also seem "boring" to me after a year or so if I can't find new things to pair them with!

Fickle fickle me.

Scarves can help with the too - basic tops to make them feel a bit more interesting, as can toppers, of course. (And, as you said, basic tops are needed precisely for those toppers!) But in transitional weather when a topper won't be worn all the time, you definitely want something with a bit of interest. And I'm coming to see that I need to work out for myself what proportion of "basics" vs. "trendy" tops I need -- and commit to turning over the "trendier" ones every season.

I wonder if the solution, generally, to top-boredom is to treat them as seasonal statement items, rather than as basics. Maybe better to have a small arsenal of new tops each year than a large collection of last-forever-classic tops -- although a couple of timeless staples are probably good to have. I think a lot of us treat tops as "basics" and then end up with a pile of them that feel too boring or too casual for all those times we can't hide them under a topper of some sort.

The flip side is that having too many "interesting" shirts can make it hard to put together an outfit where the topper, or other piece, is the star. I've totally been on that end of the spectrum too.

I think the concurrent change of season and silhouette is bringing this same question up for many people. Maybe the trend away from minimalism and back toward maximalism is playing a part in this too -- are all of those "perfect" items (ie Equipment silk shirts) going to start looking "blah" instead of perfect?

Oh, I so can relate! I too have generally abundance of tops for fall but comes next season never seem to be enough of the right ones:-)

Nowadays I am very keen of the mix media tops (plain tee fabric or even a thin sweater knit on the back, but smooth/satiny with a print on front -which I consider dressier than a common tee/sweater and not so formal like a blouse so, I am always on a hunt of these in the color schemes I love for fall (black, burgundy, grey, burnt oranges, blushy pinks).

Then, I also developed a love for the printed but almost transparent long sleeve, and longer torso, fluid blouses (mostly elasticated on hips) out there. Not the real peasant ones, but those a bit more dressier (no flutter or elasticated sleeves, nor elasticated necklines& even no ties if possible but rather a thin cuffed on the wrinkle and normal smooth & trimmed round or notch necklines(like in the Firecracker's pictie), maximum a shirred turtle neckline like some of us here we have from H&M or other shops, from last year).

These all are my actual preferences, and currently seem to work far better than any of my older ones including a wide variety of upscaled with leather insets, or other details long sleeve tees which I seldom wear them anymore:-)).

(Button downs have never been my faves for the exact reasons you said, so I stopped trying!:-))

See the picties for inspiration, many of these followed me home in the last 2 years or so:-).

The suggestion was already made, but maybe dresses with some cool shoes. You have some of the funkiest shoes I have seen on the forum so I think you have that part covered. You can add some funky necklaces or a jacket and your all set. The dress doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. You can focus on the accessories.

Like you, I am struggling with the shift in silhouettes. I do not believe they are particularly flattering for my body type, ( rectangle with IT tendencies). Wide bottoms make me look strangely wide and disproportionate. I have a long torso, so it's nearly impossible to get crop tops. Fit and flare or A-line anything is mostly awful on me. It takes a lot of looking to find something that works. My solution is to veer towards dresses worn with the most interesting shoes and boots I can find. Dresses work better than separates for me. I am slowly building a larger dress capsule for the colder months because I have a.ways been a jeans, sweater and boots person. I am not saying I will give up Jeans, but Angie mentioned that the new silhouettes favor a more curvy figure, particularly someone with an hourglass or pear shape. I'm following the advice I gave you. For winter I purchased a maxi length super warm down coat. It looks like a sleeping bag! I will need it for my dresses!

Can't help, only commiserate. I find tops hard to fit (long arms, broad shoulders, large bust) so I feel this way all the time. I live in concert shirts and shop menswear. I do very much enjoy a fine knit in a fluid fit, but it's the sort of thing that needs to be excellent quality to feel right. Good tops can be very hard to come by.

Janet, this is EXACTLY how I feel! I look at all my winter options for tops and just groan. Aside from my Joie asymmetric cashmere tunics, nothing seems appealing. Where are the interesting long sleeved patterned tops in edgy, non-boho styles. Erdem and Milly and Enzo and other super-expensive designers seem to carry them, but nothing to be found at regular retail except styles that are too classic or boho for my liking. We need to start our own clothing line with your prints!
