Jeanie, they did actually have shape wear for men - one was to hold in a portly belly and another to emphasise biceps and thighs. And some one of the earlier ones was padded on the bum so it was comfortable for horse riding. Although they noted that not many example of men's underwear survive. I guess, just like now, men wore their underpants until they developed holes and their wives insisted on throwing them out!

Very interesting review--thank you! Like Janni, I realize I also wear camisoles to protect some of my clothing--always wear them under wool, cashmere, and silk items that have to be hand-washed or dry-cleaned.

Thanks for the fascinating report Sharon and I love your playful nod to the exhibit. I hope we get an exhibit like this in The States. Textiles exhibits are my favorite (of course)! I'm wondering if men ever had any form of shapewear?? I am thinking men's shape wear today would create muscles where they didn't exist! ha ha!
I am liking the compression wear that is hitting the sports industry and wondering if it won't gravitate to some kind of shape wear. There are days when I have considered wearing it under my clothes because it makes me feel springy!!

So interesting! Thank you for sharing this. It is too bad that women have to choose between dieting and exercising themselves to death and smashing themselves into restrictive undergarments.

What a thoughtful and interesting review! I wonder what spanx says about society. I remember my grandmother, who was thin always, never dressed without her girdle. Perhaps it was more liberating than I realized. Hmm.

And if Mr. Gaylene ever comments on my passion for pricey bras, I'll just tell him I am doing my duty as a loving wife and protecting him from the evils of adultery. It would be worth buying a bunch of new bras just to be able to use that line!

shipskitty, that was one of my thoughts, too. All those layers would have been so hot!
Dimity, I saw the Valentino exhibition. It was beautiful, but I did not find it as thought-provoking as the last two exhibitions.
toronto girl, yes, but it was enlightening to realise there was not a single ideal look throughout the centuries. The concept of beauty as a social construct can be quite liberating if you don't let yourself get sucked in!
Suz, haha, yes. Most of my wardrobe is underwear and hence doesn't count!
gradfashionista, I can imagine they would feel supportive. But I can't help but think they must weaken the core muscles by relieving them of the need to do their job.
rachylou, no, please share. I'm not familiar with the story.

The other week, I watched a show on the making of Downton Abbey which, among other things, talked about the change in dress from the early years of the show to the 1920s. Corsets required extremely erect posture, and even men's dress did not allow them to slouch or bend -- which I admit I've never seen in a penguin. The upper classes really did need help in dressing and undressing.

Wish I could have seen that exhibit!

And loved your outfit! Your boyish pants were a perfect choice with the alluring top!

Thank you for this post. My parents always thought of tee shirts as underwear and risqué. Strangely, "wife beater" white tanks were not included although always worn under a dress shirt. Does anyone else remember when ladies' underwear, sheets and men's dress shirts were always white to be proper?

Interesting! On the channel TVO (Canada), there was a show picked up from the UK about this couple that lives life like they're Edwardians; I think the woman was interviewed by the Guardian some months ago. Anyway, she extolled the benefits of wearing a corset day-in and day-out; regulated appetite and weight, better posture at all times, etc. Her corset was 'reasonable' and wasn't meant to reshape her drastically.

Sharon, what a wonderful review -- thank you! (Love your outfit, too, by the way.)

This sounds absolutely fascinating. I knew about shaping undergarments, of course, but I hadn't really thought about the rigours of laundry and such. Although a moment's reflection would have told me that if a wringer could cut off someone's finger it could certainly damage the clothing!

I like the definition of "shirts" as "underwear." If we do that, our wardrobes automatically get smaller -- the shirt as "layering tee" in YLF parlance. :)

That sounds like a fascinating exhibition Sharon. TFS!

I chaperoned my dd's schoool trip last spring to a local period house, and they gave a demonstration of the clothes worn in the era and class of the owners of the house when it was built. Dealing with all that in even our short (but hot) summers was mind boggling!

Thanks Sharon. That sound's fascinating! I remember reading a book about the history of clothes once and it described how in times past the multiple layers of petticoats and changing clothes many times a day was, in part, to reduce the amount of times the overdresses required laundering. Laundering was difficult and expensive and considered very wearing on clothes and they tried to reduce how much it was required. Some garments were actually disassembled prior to laundering and then re-sewn afterwards. That is an unimaginable thing to us in these days of 'disposable' fashion but then labour was comparatively cheap for the well to do. It is easier to imagine in a cooler climate like that of of the UK but how that would have worked somewhere like Australia I can't even fathom!

Bwahaha! Wonton exposure, indeed!

I haven't evolved very far! With the exception of lingerie for the boudoir I still use underwear to protect my outer garments and provide some shape!

Thanks for sharing your experiences of the exhibition!
