My favorite jeans of the last year were recommended by KaryMK: the AG Prima 360 Skinny. Not too high snd not too low in the waist, Wore for. 13 hour flight. They might not be the best choice for hot weather.

Thanks for the tips, Angie! I do like those AG "cigarette leg" jeans in particular. I need a little more space in the calf than most. I'll see if I can find them.

Elisabeth, I'm wearing my J. Brand zippered skinnies today - with a 7.5 inch rise. My jodhpur jeans have a 6 inch rise. (Both very old pairs of jeans). I do LOVE a low low rise like you do. Very comfy.

Try these. I have the AG Stilts in white and love them. An 8 inch rise isn't too bad. I do prefer them either low or high in jeans I think. Trousers are different. I don't mind a mid-rise on those.

carambola -- I could try jcrew again. I did have a pair of their toothpick jeans several years ago, and I liked them, but I thought all their toothpick jeans were now high-rise. I must be mistaken.

Marilyn -- I didn't even know they had jeans at BR! Will give it a try.

LisaP -- any possibility of converting a pair of your existing pants into shorts? I did that (incidentally, with the j. crew jeans I mentioned above). I really liked the wash, the non-stretchy, substantial fabric and and low rise, but they proved just slightly too tight in the calves. (Does anyone else have this problem? I seem to have narrow thighs but calves like the Hulk!). So I had the tailor turn them into walk shorts. Now they are very useful.

I'm with you. And we all know where to look, it's just that whatever is out there is NOT working for one reason or another. I was right onto the ripped trend for a few years, but enough already, I agree. I don't want to have to WORK to find clothes- where are the trendier, more interesting jeans that are not $300?? I sound like a broken record, but here in Canada, our retail options just suck, to be frank, unless you shop at the boutique level. And shorts! Yes, I need new shorts! The Gap is chock full of either ripped and faded BF shorts - been there, done that, or floral prints with a 2 inch inseam. I think I'll be wearing my running shorts all summer.

Higher rises and the absence of new Always Skinny styles at Gap are really cutting into my selection as well.

I've been having good luck with the new "premium" jeans at Banana Republic. I've picked up a couple pairs. The rise is about 8.5". I'm also really loving Gap's Girlfriend fit.....unfortunately they don't currently have a nice dark wash. The darker wash they have has a lot of whiskering which I didn't find flattering. If you size down in the Girlfriends you get a nice relaxed fit without the slouch.

I like light washes for the summer and I think having one distressed pair is fun too. For fall/winter I'm all about the dark and medium washes.

I would like some shredding and patching or something to be quite honest. I don't wear denim, but I was looking today anyways... seriously ho hum. Not even black jeans on offer. Not even high rise. Is it global warming?

Angie, thanks for the suggestions. Those dark ones you pictures are nice. I'll see if I can find them. I promise you, high rise really doesn't work on me. I'm sure it's fab on you, lucky girl. ;-)

Anna, thanks for the CM suggestion. The link doesn't work because it's for the US site, but we do have CM here -- I'll check out a brick-and-mortar shop when I have time.

To everyone else, thanks for the commiseration!

It's not like I've searched high and low. I've had a couple of weeks off and I've popped into a few of the places I usually try, and was disappointed to see the lack of variety I was hoping for. There's a much better chance of finding something this fall, I think, because of the much wider selection of dark denim at that time. But, HOLES. Oh my. Talk about market saturation!

I like the looks of those Mothers and the CM ones. Sadly, what are the chances they would fit someone with big thighs? Judging from the one pair of Mothers I've tried on before, I'm not encouraged. Does anyone know how CM jeans fit?

My old Paige skinnies, which have been a workhorse, are getting visibly worn, and the newer version I bought last year is not wearing as well as my old ones (3-4 years old). I think the fabrication is a little different -- more poly or something. They actually get *pulls* in them. Argh.

Laura, raw denim sounds like way too much work to me!

The ones Angie showed above are my new ones, and I love how they feel. They are so comfy I could sleep in them. I haven't been drawn to super-skinny jeans before, because my calves always feel squashed in them, but I don't have that feeling in these.

Yeah, I'm thinking the high rise trend is going to mean a lot less denim buying for me. I don't mind a little distressing but don't want actual holes in my jeans (they just seem to get bigger every time I wear them... and I did have that jeans ripping incident a couple of years ago...)

For me this might be a good thing though. Less temptation. I have saved searches on ebay for my old favorites from years back. If you're not in dire straits that might be the way to go. It's surprising how much new dead stock still seems to pop up every now and then.

ETA: also, the majority of denim seems to have polyester in it these days. I HATE IT. It's too soft, too stretchy, and ITCHY.. So yeah, after I eliminate all the poly denim, the high rises, and the holey pairs... I think maybe 10% is left to even consider trying on?

Completely agree. I'm in search of denim shorts for the summer and the impression is that 80% of inventory everywhere is distressed denim. I'm really not into holes, even for weekend wear..

Yes I am finding the denim search frustrating too down here in NZ....I am starting by looking online and everything seems to have holes in the knee, or is super skinny/jegging material, and lots of crops.

I always like the denim I see French German and Scandinavian women wearing (huge generalisation here) so I wondered about tracking down a European brand...but then I have fit issues.

How about some of the really classic US brands such as Wrangler or Lee? From what you are saying you want slim dark fit denim with a mid rise?? I have the Wrangler Mid Twiggy in black and it has been a great skinny pair for me - it is a skinny not a slim, but I have been happy with the fit at the waist thigh butt and calf!

I'm not alright with all the holes and rips. The market is saturated with the look. We definately need a change.

That said, I LOVE the high rises because they look fresh - and bought two pairs - a sea foam blue and white. A high rise flare and cropped skinnies. Thankfully, I found them without holes.

I hear you too. The high waists, crop styles and holey treatments are leaving me totally cold. I'm babying my existing denim and being thankful summer dressing gives my denim collection a little break (too hot here for much of it).

Crossing fingers fall brings a better selection. Surely the holey jeans look is nearly played out by then.

I could use a new pair of dark skinny jeans, now that my old favourites developed a crotch hole (the only unacceptable hole these days, lol). I would accept black or dark indigo, but there's not a lot on offer at the moment. Granted, this might be because it's coming up summer, so there are more light washes out there at the moment. But still. What is up with all that torn denim? I've come to accept and even like some distressing on jeans, but it feels like every second pair out there has knee holes! Add to the fact that most jeans are high-rise, which doesn't really work on my figure, and that the skinny jeans are likely to be too skinny...I think I'm going to have to wait for fall.

There is lots and lots of optic white (again, because summer) but I'm not really a fan. Works out well for those of you who want white jeans -- as long as you're OK with high rise and/or lots of rips!
