I am (ideally) a Team Sets and truly on Team Separates.

See, if I was richer, or smaller on top, or bigger on the bottom, and didn't have to wear cotton knickers, then I would wear sets, because it does bother me that my lingerie doesn't match. But since none of these are true, I guess I'm stuck with almost matching. Say, navy blue lace bra with dark blue cotton knickers. Or white bra with hot pink pattern and hot pink culotte. That's the best I can do.

I am such a set girl at heart... and I do have to match color, nude or black. But I have a favorite Wacoal style bra and a favorite Jockey pantie so I just have to find peace with that! They are both pretty : )

Black cotton panties and a black or black/leopard bra 95% of the time. So team coordinated neutral separates, I guess. When I have to wear a nude bra, I go wild with mismatched cotton panties :)

For special occasions, I have a few matched sets, but I really hate those bras.

Team Seperates! I like my panties to be either pure cotton or a high cotton content mix and the bra matching panties never fit the bill.

Team separates. I like a particular style of brief which I buy a lot of and then I just buy nude, black or white bras to kind of match up with the knickers.

Okay I'm on Team Usually Separates -meaning that I have some sets and they will usually (but not always ) get worn together, but I often do a grab-what's-clean-&-go . I do try for coordination ,buying two or three bras and 5-10 panties from a color /print collection makes spontaneous coordination/matching easier.
Classic black& tan leopard print is a handy way to "match " as the print will go well with both black or a range of nude bra colors.

Joy, thank you for that link. Angie already detailed the range of reasons clients give for separates. I really should have lurked for a year and absorbed the archives before jumping in here blind with new-only-to-me questions.

Guess one argument against sets could be, "if I wear sets all the time, I'll feel so fabulous underneath that I won't worry enough about what's visible, and end up walking around looking like Amy K does."

Every time I buy a bra, I try to buy two matching panties to go with it. I also like hankie pankie thongs and boy shorts, and sometimes I'll search for colors that match my bras, and wear those, too.

I know I'm late to this party, but wanted to say: Sets, sets, sets! And like Angie, the prettier, the better :)

I have very specific needs for my undergarments in terms of structure and support and I don't have an unlimited budget, but I think the effort and expense involved in finding and purchasing these items is well worth the results, both in terms of how my garments look and how I feel. When I am wearing a matched set, I feel put together, empowered, and frankly, sexier.

It's a good thing. And the Mr. likes it too :)

My small band size des not allow for much selection of pretty sets (also don't wear thongs), but after this post http://youlookfab.com/2013/06/.....ay-or-nay/ and some previous discussion, I went on a hunt. I love the look and feel of pretty sets. I found that I do not need cotton if I don't wear underwear to bed. I hand wash my undies in the sink with mild lingerie as part of my before-bed routine, so don't need many sets.

I do separates, but I always feel weird if the bra and panties aren't in colors that at least vaguely coordinate. Wearing, say, a black bra with pastel printed underwear would just feel kind of off somehow. I think I wear separates mostly because it's easier to find bras in solid black/white/beige than in anything else and easier to wear those under clothes anyway, but I'd get bored if my underwear only looked like that too.

It's not so much that I associate sets with something negative, but rather that separates are what works well for me. I love certain Wacoal bras - I like how they look and fit, and they are very comfortable, so I buy usually three nude ones every year and a black one as needed (every two years, probably). My underwear choice is the Lacie thong from Victoria's Secret and I buy 15 black ones and three nude ones each year (in one trip because I don't really like the store). It's comfortable, doesn't show under clothes, and I like the lace.

I am sort of on Team Sets... I own a couple of matching sets and if I'm not wearing those, then I colour code my separates.

I love boy leg knickers so I have an assortment of them in various shades of black and white and if I'm wearing a black bra, I will wear black knickers too. If the bra is plain, the bottom is allowed to have a pattern and vice versa, but never both unless they are a matchy set. Quirky I know.

Faith, please let us know what you turn up in your library research.

Echo, Prima Donna's full panties used to be very high-waisted. Not sure about now; I'm much more familiar with their new(er) Twist line. Both could be worth looking at. http://www.primadonna.eu

Van de Velde is the parent company. http://www.vandevelde.eu/brands/
Marie Jo used to have a limited cup range, but it looks like they've expanded it, and if that works for you, some of their full briefs might work. Quality is overall excellent. There've been a few glitches, like a Marie Jo line where the legband finish was so thick it guaranteed VPL so it wasn't worth buying the really nice bra. Or the Prima Donna bra top (great idea!) that came out looking just horsey.

Angie, thanks so very much for raising a strong voice for Team Sets!

Amy, I do wear underwear to bed - I experimented with not doing so this summer when I was struggling with a bacterial imbalance in the girly bits :/ and I just couldn't get used to the feeling. But I wear cotton undies 95% of the time, unless I have an outfit that demands shape wear, so it's all breathable.

Guess it's all in what you're used to - its really interesting to read everyone's preferences. I'm still amazed that anyone wears thongs on purpose.

Separates all the way. I like pretty, lacy French bras, but I always wear cotton underwear (although it's often in cute prints so not too boring, but still, not sexy like my bras). So, yeah, I never match.

I used to always wear matching sets because, well, I could. But after having a c-section and abdominal surgery, I simply look better in panties with a higher rise. And manufacturers seem to have decided that any woman who would choose to wear hi-cut briefs MUST be dowdy and unstylish, so they rarely make them in anything pretty, let alone having a bra to match. If you aren't wearing teeny-tiny bikinis or hip huggers, you must want granny-panties. *insert eyeroll here* And even among hi-cut briefs, it is difficult to find ones that flatter without, say, creating a harsh line across the middle or being saggy, or not coming up quite high enough and then slipping down, etc.

So, I still at least match colour as closely as I can. Black panties with a black bra, nude panties with a nude bra, red panties with a red bra, and other colours as available. I am the weirdo who walks around the lingerie department holding up a bra to various panties, desperately trying to find a match.

I'm Team Separates because I have different brands I favor for my bra and underwear.

And I like nude bras, but colorful and print-tastic underwear. But, I always make sure the underwear can't be seen through my clothes.

One further thought -- do you all know the novel Elegance by Kathleen Tessaro? I love the underwear shopping passages, it's possibly my favorite thing in "style" literature.

[Off the topic, I've never been able to figure out whether the vintage advice book by Mme. Dariaux around which the novel is based was invented by Tessaro, it seems only to have been published--or reprinted?--after the novel, or whether it's a genuine period piece. A tiny bit of library research could probably resolve this question for me!]

I'm with you, Amy and Angie. Sets! Always. I have two weeks' worth in rotation at any given time, usually about 50% black, 35% nude and/or blush, and 15% color.

My mother, in whose example I follow, keeps only about 5 days in rotation, and she does do near-daily laundry. I prefer to have more sets on hand and to do less frequent laundry, but if I find myself priced-out of my preferred system I'll suck it up and do the frequent wash. I know it's perfectly acceptable, if not preferable, to wear bras more than once before washing, but I just can't do it, so for me it's one bra, one pair of panties, they usually wear out at nearly the same time.

In Italy, undergarment shopping was an annual or twice-annual event that took place in the basement of Rinascente (upscale department store) on the morning of the first day of the summer and/or winter sales. My 2012 haul is still going strong, but I'm not sure yet what I'll be doing next year.

??!

Is Angie really the only person besides me who feels uncomfortable in mismatched undies, um, I mean separates? Hands down, I'm the worst-dressed person on YLF, so I thought if anything, you'd all be full of references for quality sets.

So, Team Separates, what do you associate with Sets? Besides what I'm reading in some posts: impractical, uncomfortable, unnecessary?

My bras are, like many posts mentioned, also purchased for fit and comfort, AND for quality/longevity. Fair labor is important to me; no fabrics dyed by 8-year-olds. I tried on Wacoal's higher-end line, forget what it's called, and was horrified at the construction as well as the materials. Panache fits well, but wears out fast. Freya, last time I tried it, didn't fit right, but I'm going to try their sports set. Marlies Dekkers' quality is pretty good, but doesn't offer the support I like under clothing, and shows through in ways not part of my style preferences, so those sets have been relegated to loungewear. And I'm not sure any more about her manufacturer's sourcing.

Who was it who posted in the sewing thread about making her own bras? Amiable? That would open up all kinds of room for pretty sets, I'd think. *If* one wanted to wear them, and it sounds like most here don't.

Laura / rhubarbgirl, this might be asking for TMI, but it sounds like you wear underwear all the time, as in even when sleeping? Isn't that what bf's cotton boxer briefs are for? You wrote, "I've never understood how you'd manage to wear matching lingerie all the time without having to do laundry every day." 1. lots more panties than bras, to a set, preferably in a range of styles so you have choices about comfort and VPL; 2. panty liners, changed often; 3. bras generally don't need washing every day. Back when I was wearing light tops and dark bottoms & jackets a lot, I found a shade of red that didn't show through white blouses.
