What has stopped me from doing it in the past is that people would have to refer to each other in the post by login name, which is a little confusing.</p> <p>But maybe it is worth overcoming that little complexity because I agree it would be very useful.</p> <p>There is one new thing in the imminent changes that addresses this partially. It would be really cool if people could tag others in their forum posts, similar to a facebook tag or on Ravelry. Sometimes a forum conversation goes like this.</p> <p>A: What do you think of these shoes?<br /> B: I have those shoes, they're great.<br /> A: What size did you wear B? And what color did you pick?</p> <p>If B never comes back to the thread, then they miss out on answering that question. If A could tag "B" when asking their question, B would see it as a notification when they are logged into the forum.</p> <p>I have no clue how much overhead this would be for the forum - it might be too costly in terms of database storage and processing time. Most of these changes are under the hood, but you will see some improvements on the surface too, including...</p> <ol> <li>New fields in the profile</li> <li>More email notification options</li> <li>Improved private messaging</li> </ol> <p>That last one, improved PM, is the biggest change you'll see. Essentially, PM in the future will behave just like the rest of the forum. So, for example, you will be able to add photos to messages. It will be like having a private forum between you and the people you're exchanging messages with.</p> <p>Unfortunately we won't be able to import messages from the old system into the new one, but we will give everyone a month with both systems available.</p> <p>For the last couple of weeks we have been running the new YLF code on our staging server, newlookfab.com. But we'd like to do more testing with more people before we launch it on YLF.
