I am experimenting for sure.
I had found I was looking or buying some items early in season when I already had similar items or needed to decide whether to toss and replace.
And, while to some extent layering is over-rated, for me, I was missing out on some combinations. Or not seeing whether this or that top could take the place of others, and allow me to whittle down.

Things would be MUCH more spacious if I just kept a smaller winter capsule and actually, I might one day try that. Right now I'm doing some of that, here it is, will you wear it? to work through some of the not-sure-joy and/or not sure if I was relying on an item to complete an oufit,

April, your home's former owner was probably just like me! I have very little hanging space that accommodates dresses because I don't wear them much and just don't need that kind of hanging space. I guess the future owners of our house will need to adapt!

I am also having trouble envisioning before the pictures are posted, UF, but I am lusting after Sadie's rod space from that last year's post!

The lovely walk-in closet in my new house (not designed by me) is bizarrely generous on shelf space but a bit stingy on rod space. There are rods, yet they are almost all meant for shirts or skirts. There is only about 18" of rod space for dresses or other long items, even though the closet itself is almost the size of my son's bedroom in our old house -- nope, I'm not kidding. It's odd, to be sure. I guess the former owner did not wear dresses.

And I can't reach the upper tier of rods without a stepladder, so I have given all of those to Mr. April, and that is our organizational system.

Interesting approach, and it sounds like a good plan to try. Sadie's closet looks amazing -- I missed that thread the first time around.

I recently saw a YouTube video of Trinny from the British WNTW show doing a little closet edit in her own wardrobe, and she was hanging some unworn pieces in outfits at the front of her closet. It made me consider doing that myself to encourage me to restyle old things that are not getting worn, once I figure out how to restyle them.

I'm also considering moving more things into my holding zone to see how I feel with fewer pieces visible in my closet. I'm up for a little experimenting in my organization too, it seems!

I like the new arrangement. It helps to think outside the box.

Putting dead center at eye level anything I haven't been wearing that I want to wear more often has worked well for me.

Carter, thanks for link/ inspiration. Closet envy! Yes, my pants' new location is quite like that. Since they are work pants in mostly black, navy, gray and subtle pinstripes, they blur together more than Sadie's so being able to see the style helps.
I had actually labelled the hangers in the past but couldn't really get the tags or labels to be easily readable.
Jenn, yes! I have tried some long ago and think I want to upgrade to motion detector type. Some if this issue us , umm, age- related !
AM, your ideas sound great. I think that's part of my aim, to figure out what main- closet arrangements will promote use, help identify essentials, rejects, and some creativity and maybe a bit more overlap of items( work and smart casual or social events).

Good for you for taking charge of your closet! It's a bit hard for me to picture the various sections, but your discussion about moving the pants to the top rack reminded me of a post Sadie did last year.

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-la-carter

At first thought, it seems "backwards" to put pants on top, but looking at Sadie's closet, it clearly makes perfect sense!

Would love to see some pictures of yours!

Possible helpful tool/invention/thingybopper? Stick on tap lights. I got a few from a dollar store and they can be helpful. I suspect the more expensive ones may be better and I may switch later on but thought I'd share. Walmart or Target as seen on tv section might have the better ones.

I have limited space but I'm in the process of a closet re-org. My goal is all about having a better process vs. it being about storage. I want my closet to inspire me to create a variety of very deliberate looks. This means wearing more of my statement shoes/pieces. To me, these are the keys to reinforcing my style. So, I'm thinking about how to plan my closet based on 1) how I can see and rotate the statement pieces and 2) allow these pieces to lead in creating an outfit. I'm still thinking on this but I think this means building the outfits from the bottom up. Decide on the bottoms/footwear -- and built up. So, I want to see and grab for bottoms/footwear combo first and have it lead my through my closet as I create an outfit. Not sure if this is any help but know I am with you in spirit in a closet re-org. This is heavy lifting (physically and mentally).

I'm going to favorite this one, because I've been in an RV for almost 7 years and I have ZERO closet space. I've forgotten what it's like to have an actual closet and will need ideas on how to make one when we build our small house. So interested in all ideas!

For the new year, I decided I wanted to mix things up a bit and put items on different rods, different shelves , not only for making room & organizing but also just to change perspective and perhaps shake loose some creativity or style focus or keeping track. I figured I can always schlep them back around again.
I'm lucky to have a lot of hanging space in my main closet, but not the perfect distance between top & bottom rods - one section is closer together than ideal for double hanging, for example.
Here are some of my random observations of what I ran into:

I have mostly double rod arrangements, though some are the add-a-rod hanging things so I could remove or shorten, etc.
I found that I can't just treat all the areas as interchangeable, because visually there are differnces due to spacing and light and some nooks.

It might seem that tops go on top and bottoms on bottom, but the tops block the light over the lower rods.
Also part of the rods space has a short part of a wall in front of it on either side- still easy to reach but it's off to each side a bit when I'm standing in front of this rod section.
Yet, I really like having my tops--- blouses, pullovers- up at eye level where I can riffle through them easily.
I had had my pants at eye level on a eye- level top rod to allow more light to the rod section below . Then I have some rod space perpendicular to this area, but the upper rod is higher so it had seemed less accessible . I have been hanging my jackets/ blazers up there because that had seemed right for those bulkier items and less used.

Instead now I did a flip.
I've put all my work pants up on this HIGHER top rod. As always, I hang them folded over those one- arm open pant hangers. Why the higher rod might work is that my pants are mostly all quite dark, yet different styles. The most rapid identifying aspects are HEM and WAISTBAND. When up higher, the hems and waistbands( which are together, since pants are folded waist to hem) are all lined about eye level, making it easier to tell the black bootcut from the tapered pant vs the cuffed pant and so on. Plus this rod is not blocked by any short wall sections.

Now then, I'm trying the blazers on a low rod even though some tops above block visibility and light a bit . This may work because the jackets have a broader width to them at the shoulder line on the hanger and in profile, so I can see the colors and material well enough to tell them apart even from that angle. That is less true of knit tops which are thinner.
However, I'm going to still need to put some tops on a section below my " top tops". Or will at least unless or until I reduce my numbers!
Since these will be a bit harder to see down there, I'm trying to think whether they should be lesser used, or maybe should be a category such as dress T's and shells and knits and blouses that are multi - season and/ or layering. This is a category I'm trying to include as all- in, rather than seasonal storage, in order to do more outfit creation OR decide the items are not being worn and toss them. It might be important to arrange them strictly and keep them that way , and not crowd and smoosh them together, or maybe add a motion light or something down lower on the wall.
Some of this shuffling may open up some new ways to hang belts and scarves.

I know it's not easy to envision what's going on, but still thought I'd share for any fellow " arrangers " out there.

Please do share any "aha" or clever arrangements you've done, or overcome.
