In high school when everyone else was wearing Candies, I was wearing MIA clogs. I have those same Keens, Adelfa. No Tevas at the moment, but my Chacos are pretty similar. It's a good thing I have a significant soft spot for ugly shoes as foot issues are making it difficult to wear much else these days. Gotta get me some Birks!

Yes, Famolares! I never thought of those as ugly! I had this sort of tweak or something that if something was too popular, I wouldn't buy it. So I eventually got some navy sandals that were Famolares but not identifiable as such, and wore them for years, all the while wishing people knew they were Famolares! Ah, youth! I also had Dr. Scholls, loved them.

Yup, the Famolares. How about the Dr. Scholl sandals with the wooden sole and Clark's Wallabies? For me, college seemed to be one shoe fad after another. My Earth shoes really stood out in Japan where all the other young women wore much more refined shoes that didn't make them look like waddling ducks.

I remember wanting a pair of clogs so badly when I was barely a teen that I insisted they fit when they were really too big. They were burgundy suede with a faux shearling lining and of course a wooden sole!

I just found Muk Luks a much better fit for low volume feet, and way cheaper. I have a pair, and it is just now getting warm enough for them here, so will see how they hold up. have had Birks and Betula in the past. Long time ago I had earth shoes too. Loved them!

I love, love the ugly shoe. Pretty sure it's the bad influence of my native town (a college town). I totally recognize from your description Adelfa the whole Goretex and ugly shoe look, which is definitely an aspirational style. I'm slow though; I didn't realize until this year how much people really were spending on those black quilted barn jackets.

I have a pair of white Mephistos that are Birkenstocks with bling. I got them on deep discount because NO ONE would buy these shoes because of their Hollywood aura. Only *yucky earth* would do for the buying public.

But it does have to be said, my own ownership notwithstanding: Birks and Tevas are a form of population control.

Rae, I meant to mention Worishofers! Those were actually too ugly for me and uncomfortable to boot but I so wanted to make them work! And I was all ready to have Danskos in every color, but the first pair made my ankle roll.

And that wannabe bohemian thing. I wanted that for YEARS. I wanted to be artsy and to break the mold. Then I suddenly realized that that was not me and that I was so much more comfortable building on classics.

Such a funny and interesting post!

I remember all these shoes, but the only ones I had (or have) any love for are the Docs. Those I still like and would wear. None of the others have ever appealed to me. Earth shoes and Birks (which I've tried on) are both horribly uncomfortable to me. So even when these were in style, I avoided them.

I currently own Birks and Tevas. My Birks are the only pair of sandals I have at the moment, because I just don't fit in most normal styles. Love them! And I decided last summer to embrace the look of them for my feet's sake, even if most people here think they are a no-go. I only wear the Tevas on camping vacation. I really like Docs and I've tried them a while ago, but the sizes didn't work out. I'm definitely going to try another style if I see one I like. I've never worn Uggs and I hate the look. In my peer group they were always associated with teens and uneducated girls anyway... When I was a teen everybody first wore Cons and then Vans.

Everyone has a different aesthetic sense, so one person's ugly is another one's cute!

I would still wear those earth shoes you show, in the right circumstances, and I have long coveted a pair of Birkenstocks. When I was an undergrad I went to a school with a very strong hippie identity and they were very much the "it" shoe on campus. I never did like Uggs much but I loved my Tevas (and even my Crocs, which I still have!).

Haha - I love this post! I have to say - I have always loved me an ugly shoe! The chunkier and grungier, the better! As Rae said, its that wannabe boho-artsy-hippy-grunge thing that I have. That and the fact that shoe comfort is pretty important to me - I have dropped arches, wonky ankles and a wierd way of walking that causes quite a bit of achiness especially if I have been walking around all day and or walked quite a bit in the wrong kind of shoes. High heels, wonky ankles and uneven surfaces are just a nightmare for me!

My friend has this pair of floral birks that I just love! And doc's - OMG I love me a DM! I am desperate for a new pair, but they are really hard to find in SA and they are very very expensive to ship!

I have recently been admiring these (the mary-janes at the top of the page) : http://www.green-cross.com/Pro.....egory=true

Laugh, laugh. laugh I have had everyone of those shoes in your photo Adelfa, at some stage or other. The Docs I still have but they only seem to come out once every two years (and then they are perfect in that instance) Mine are cherry red and I have had them for over 30 years - just when the coloured ones appeared in Australia. So hip @the time.
The Birkenstocks, of course were the sign of a 'serious traveller' in the 70's and 80's and one just had to have a pair to take one's self seriously.
Tevas- I only used for diving and rock hopping in summer but also great to walk in.
The Earth shoes - amusing little things. I remember saving up to buy them, only to be pipped at the post by my 'so called' best friend who was working, whereas I was a student!!! Still remember that and we still laugh about it.
NOW - as for the ugly shoe of the moment, Ugg boots they have always had a place as house shoes in my part of the world and we do make fantastic ones. But once I saw young girls wearing them out with jeans tucked into them - well, lets say I had a moment of realising that I was old. I think they look awful and should not go out of the house (well not past the corner shop anyway). Matter of fact I have them on now. So enjoyed thinking back to the events and feelings associated with the humble ugly shoe.

Birks. I wear mine to yoga & for walks in summer. My feet love them. I've tried other styles but they never work.

Amiable, yes, I was thinking of Born too. Absolutely!

vipbrj, I know what you mean! I feel especially fab in my Birks when my toes are polished!

hahah! I have the birkenstocks in photo 2! I wear them with shorts and tank tops in the summer. They definitely aren't feminine but I like them for some weird reason.

Ha! I love my Birks (loved them so much they fell apart - need to find a cobbler), and my Earth Shoes too. My Birks are easier to style - I almost never wear the Earth shoes because they look frumpy to me. I love my Keens too in the summer. I should get a pair of Docs so that I'm well rounded!

But unlike Janet, my feet LOVE the wide toes, and I could wear them all the time, never mind the "in" factor or the ugliness :)

(I think some Born shoes fall into this category too, btw)
