Thank you for the supportive comments. It's a huge disappointment, but I'd rather return it and get my money back now rather than try to alter it, fail, and not be able to return it later. (Auburn and Sihaya, that is so frustrating to have a beautiful and expensive piece that falls apart due to the material it's constructed from!)

Well, moving on, and at least I got one great day's worth of wear out of that dress.

I am pretty thrilled with my new specs! Thank you for all of the complimentary feedback. They are fun to wear and quite comfortable on my wide face. I NEVER thought that I would opt for black frames again!

Glasses look great!
Too bad about a dress but I agree it is better to return. I think these problems often happen with silk items of not too high quality...
I am sure the perfect dress for you is out there and waiting for you!

Kari,
I have TWO silk items that have suffered this same sort of shredding. Both are brand name items that I found on sale but still with relatively hefty price tags. One is a skirt and one is a dress but both look to be the same fabric as your dress and both started to shred in the back seams. I think it's something about fabric integrity--such soft delicate silk cannot take ANY sort of stress, as is inevitably caused when you go about your day and there is light pulling on the fabric with sitting and what not. I have learned my lesson and think this fabric is to be purchased with caution and perhaps is best for oversized/baggy items rather than tailored ones. Total bummer though because it's also the only fabric I've seen do these kinds of ruffles. Sigh.

That said, don't give up the ghost on finding something you like just as well! And keep me posted when you do!

Kari, this is such a sad story because as everyone has said, that dress is gorgeous on you. But it's true...it sounds like it's a fabric issue, and if it were to shred again, who knows where it might happen? You could have a serious and embarrassing wardrobe malfunction. I think if you kept it you might always be a little uneasy about wearing it. Not worth it. On the other hand, those glasses look great on your pretty face!

Kari - sorry it happened. I would return. The problem will recur. My heart was broken when I bought a gorgous silk jacket for about $150 - and the seams burst out. They can't be repaired and I can't return it. There's no use for it other than a dust rag.
Your glasses look stunning - yay for the bright spot!

I think you are all right. I thought about it overnight and am thinking that even if the dress could be repaired, chances are that it might shred again - the seam is super weak. I just need to give up on this one, unfortunately, even though I'm incredibly sad to see it go.

Kim, that is a smart suggestion. However, I suspect that it would cost MUCH more than $80 to make a dress that I like as much as this one. Making ruffles that lie so flat without adding bulk to the bust looks like it would be really tricky. One of my favorite things about it was the beautiful silk fabric that was in such a pretty print and draped so well - I've never seen material like that - and it's unique enough that the possibility of finding a similar dress that doesn't cost a bundle is very slim.

(I never would have been able to afford the dress at its actual retail price - given how shoddy the material is, I'm VERY glad that I didn't spend more than $100 on it, let alone the $218 it would have originally cost. And thank goodness that Nordstrom actually stands behind their return policy when a garment is poorly made!)

I would return it. I imagine that any issues like this are a result of workmanship, which means this won't be the last issue it has, even if it's repaired or turned into a blouse. Better to get the money back and find something better than have to altered or repaired and go through this heartbreak again (especially when you can no longer return it)!

Oh man, I so, so hope that it can be repaired and will still be wearable. I fell in love with this dress, was thrilled at the deeply discounted price, and felt like it was 100% an expression of where I wanted to go with my style. I am going to have a tough time returning it and am really not sure I'll find something else I love that much for the price. However, LegacyOfPearl has a good point.

Maybe I should make my alteration consultation or return downtown before the Seattle YLF gathering so I can have some immediate post-dress-failure therapy.

Thanks for the boost on the glasses! I am going to enjoy switching between two pairs that I love, and that fit my face better than the red pair that I'm replacing. Great specs are such fun.

The glasses are fab on you! Great choice!

I'm so sorry about the dress!! Wah!! I tend to think your best option is to just return it and look for something else equally fab. So sorry it didn't work out because it looked just beautiful on you!

Sorry to hear that about the dress, maybe it's something that can be worked out.Even as a blouse I think you would give it a lot of wear.
The glasses are fantastic, they look so beautiful on you.

So sorry to hear about the dress Kari. You look fantastic in it and great that you at least have the pictures. I wouldn't try to alter it given it ripped at the second wear. Money back would be my take on it.

I LOVE those glasses on you. Great choice.

Oh, the dress is so adorable! What a shame it didn't hold up .Not much you can do with poor quality though.

PS I love how Nordies has such great service.

So that pretty silk new dress that I got last week? Ruined on the second wear. I wore it all day last week at a conference where I was standing up, sitting down, etc. and it was fine. Not too tight and not pulling, and utterly comfortable. (It actually looks tighter than it is in this photo because it was taken at the end of a long day where I had been sitting - those are crease lines more than anything.)

Then today I wore it to work and halfway through the day the front center seam, right at the low thigh, just shredded. Not ripped - it didn't happen all of a sudden when I sat down or stood up or anything - but shredded, except for the inner lining. It's a 3 inch long hole. I am so crushed.

Fortunately Nordstrom, with their stellar customer service, isn't giving me a hard time at all though I already took the tags off and wore it once. They will accept a return or will do any alterations necessary, and credit the alteration cost back to me. However, I'm not sure if the tear CAN be mended without making the dress too tight to move comfortably in, and thus prone to tearing again. There are no more dresses in my size, or even close. I haven't visited Nordstrom's alterations department yet since the mishap just occurred today, but I'm not very optimistic.

The other alternative is that since the rip is very low, perhaps I could have them alter the dress into a tunic or a blouse. But do I really want an almost-$80 blouse? That's expensive even for a dress for me (even though the dress would have been almost $220 at full retail price.)

If repairing the dress won't leave it wearable for me, what do you think that I should do?

* * *

(The bright spot to the day is that I took the plunge on the pair of glasses that Angie and Maya, and some others, had liked best on my Lenscrafters glasses search thread. When I tried them on in the store with my contacts in, so I could actually see what they looked like, I decided that the black was not too dark due to the contrasting inner white frame, and I liked them much better than the other frames. My mom changed her mind and voiced her approval once she saw them on me in person, too. Thank you for your help ladies! They'll make a fun switch from my burgundy/turquoise pair.)
