Helpful ideas re scarring! Thank you all. I was fortunate in that I landed directly on the brow bone, so any scar will be largely hidden by either eyebrow or eyebrow makeup.

I was warned to observe strict sun-protection protocols for the next year but since I do that anyway, those directions will be easy to follow.

April, wow you are being so brave with all of this. Sorry to hear you also got a cut on your face.

Regarding scar minimisation, I had a partial thyroidectomy last year which resulted in a surgical incision of about 2 inches across my neck. I used silicone strips (Elastoplast product) for the first 6 weeks (once the wound had healed and the scabs fallen off) and then for the following 4.5 months scar reduction gel (Dematix). I just kept it up until I could no longer see the scar.

I was lucky to have a skilled surgeon, but think the silicone treatment made a big difference to how quickly the scar disappeared.

MM - a band would indeed be helpful. I have been doing my clumsy best by aiming a claw clip at my hair w/my right hand but your idea is much better.

April, I hope you heal quickly. I wish I could recall how I managed to get dressed when my left clavicle was fractured the week before I started medical school. However, I vividly recall the agony of trying to use my parking card to enter the parking garage. My car had manual windows so I had to roll them down with my right hand and then find a way to insert the keycard into the card reader….also using my right arm/hand all completed without moving my left side. I caused a daily traffic jam. Once in the building, I couldn’t pretend someone else had caused the slowdown since the fracture was so obvious. (I also developed a quarter sized bald spot where my head hit the pavement…it was definitely my worst years for style).

OMG April! Wish you a super quick recovery!

Hair bands can be a great help and I think you are on a winner with a shirt dress as you just described!

As for the scar, I really like rose hip oil as it helps to reduce the redness of an old 7 stitches scar that I got as a child.

I have taken two old large dress shirts from Mr. A and cut off most of the arm on the right (for cooling it's HOT here right now). Left just stays under the shirt, in sling.

Oh that's a bummer! My youngest broke his collar bone as a child and there was nothing to do but try not to move it and let it heal. Agree button downs shirts will probably be easiest.

RandB yes, bad shoulder first when putting on, bad shoulder last when taking off.

ETA: oops, this is actually the reverse of how I do it. Because I don't take sling off except to bathe, I am not putting that arm through any sleeves. I put the right arm in a sleeve then gently drape the left. Reverse order to undress. (If you were putting the bad arm into a sleeve, you would do as we originally described.) Clear as mud, right?

DH has taken over hair washing and is stunned at how many steps are involved in maintaining curls. Perhaps this will cause him to support my idea that I should just buzz it, like Selma Blair did.

So sorry to hear this news. Stretchy and soft clothing is likely to be the best in a couple of sizes bigger than normal for ease of getting on and off. My mother had a stroke which resulted in her being paralysed down her left size and her arm and hand curled inwards, she stopped wearing bras, but wore singlet tops for modesty and soft and loose layers. She had a poncho for warmth which worked well.

Oh, how awful. I'm sorry to hear about this injury. A good friend of mine went through it, too, and I know that for one thing during that time, she embraced the natural waves in her hair. She also told me she became adept at doing a lot of things one-handed/armed. It helped that she was working from home during that time, too, and she had the option of leaving her video off for much of her zoom interactions.

Oww! Oh April no dressing advice (except maybe a personal dresser ) but tons of sympathy.

Thanks all. The support is much appreciated.

P.S. Any bra strap puts pressure on the clavicle, so I basically ordered some "tube top" styles this morning. Also a couple items from the Tommy Hilfiger Adaptive line.

Oh no! I’m really sorry. I wrecked my shoulder (rotator cuff) a couple years ago. It hurt for almost a year, I think. I avoided pullover tops for a long while. That was the only thing. I have back closing bras. I would just put it on backwards to do the hooks, then turn it around and put it on. I still do this.
