Anna-I remember my late 40s as a horrible time. Realized I really and truowad middle aged. Felt a drift in my style. Friends were harder to make, and even those I had, hard to keep. My best friend moved back home to help her elderly parents, other friends were tied up with children-which I didn’t have. And I had some setbacks at work. As the years have past I re-evaluated what was important to me and focused being the best version of me. Sounds trite, but really it helped me.
Dress for you—wear what makes you happy. When it comes to your style you are what matters and yours is the only opinion that matters.

I'm wondering if you might just be emotionally drained at the moment, Anna, and your usual sources of energy and joy aren't as easily available to you? I know I found my work - though meaningful - not a pretty place. I sometimes wonder if I and colleagues don't suffer some sort of low grade PTSD from what we were exposed to. I aimed for as much health and beauty - sports and fitness, music, gardening/nature, good food, funny books, art/fashion, etc. - to balance the horrors I sometimes had to manage as part of my work. When the balance was off, usually because of being stretched too thin caring for someone, or dealing with health issues, it would be hard to find joy in anything and all I wanted was comfort. Sounds like you might be going through something like this?

I second those who suggest the restorative powers of nature as an antidote. Why not put on a fab lippy, some comfortable clothes (those stupid dad sneakers ), get out your camera and go looking for some beauty in your environs?

Love those jeans, what does the pink sweater look like? Suntiger’s suggestion of a coat or cape is a good one.
Do you still get out hiking very often? From your posts and beautiful photos you seem to enjoy that..

I like the new jeans, and you are Not Frumpy! I think the beginning of winter has a lot to do with it as Janet said. Im feeling it too. Its hard to feel feminine when you have to bundle up and hide everything under a coat! Personally, i just enjoy wearing skirts and dresses much more than pants and am struggling to make winter dressing fun.
Lately my solution/workaround has been to be more maximal in accessorizing. I may be a bulky snowperson but can be a more interesting bulky snowperson! Fun socks have been a new addition, and more pattern mixing- but still a work in progress for sure.
Also how about a fun coat/cape, boots or bag-since those are the most visible in winter?

Anna, you were looking smashing a couple months ago when I saw you, but I understand the feeling (experiencing a bit of it myself). The start of the winter season is rarely easy for many of us, and December tends to bring out a bit of my doldrums too. I’m sorry you’ll miss that holiday party. If I were out in your area, we’d find something fun to get into!

I bet those jeans look great on you! I hope they help spark some new outfit joy.

I'm feeling off too. I've been ordering stuff from online, but when I get it, I feel just ho-hum in it. Last night I browsed lots of images online in the hopes of creating a mood board, but I had a really hard time finding any pics that really inspired me. I found a few but much less than I have in the past when I've done this exercise.

Do you think you might be in the midst of a style shift? I find that sometimes that causes this kind of thing.

Anna, I love Ummlila's response. Your post resonates because we all feel like this from time to time and your honesty is refreshing.

With these jeans, the black and white ones and the jacket your Dad bought you for your birthday, I am sure you look great. In every post I have seen you provide, your hair and make-up is beautiful and you have a great collection of interesting accessories. Frumpy is ABSOLUTELY the last word that anyone (but you) would use to describe you.

The biggest difference for me as I navigate changes in size, age, ability to remember names, etc. is truly the incredible growth in alternative role models on Instagram and all over the place. Over 50, wrinkles, grey hair obviously, and so on. I love the jeans, I recently wore split front pants and although I don't love the shiny material in mine I love the split. Funny you mention horoscopes - I am not a follower but the last couple weekly horoscopes on The Cut proved surprisingly prescient.

Being on this site, my own personal experiences, and looking around the world with truly open eyes has taught me that style has nothing to do with size. And, Anna, you ARE stylish. You always have been, and while you may feel "frumpy", I would bet that many others still view you as inspirational. The jeans you posted are fab, and I bet they look fab on you. I'm sorry you're not feeling fab, but please never doubt that you ARE.

I think the holidays/ birthdays can be a bummer, so that might be getting you down. Also the cold weather, it’s uncomfortable and drains energy... (I believe you are in northern hemisphere?)

I probably agree with Barbara Diane that having some fun occasions to look forward to and dress up for might provide some impetus or spark. Life can be so damn mundane at times and is so casual now - honestly there are some months that I could wear jeans and sneakers every day and it just would not matter....I would be appropriate for every occasion. That suits some people doesn't it but not very inspiring if you want to be more fashion forward (not that I am but you are).

I do think sweaters can be tricky if you are a bigger size - I love wearing them but they tend to not be flattering. Jackets/blazers/structured cardigans etc are not as relaxed/cosy but are more flattering if that is on your mind.

I feel like there should be local boutiques/independent designers catering to your tastes and size in a large fashionable city like Seattle but of course I have no idea....I am sure you have gone down this path.

I was thinking about where I was in terms of fashion (and other parts of my life) when I was 46 (11 years ago) and don't recall it as being a particularly memorable time . And that's being diplomatic. That may or may not mean anything, but I firmly believe that there are periods in our lives where it's tough to find your niche and your style, and the clothes that go along with it. That said, I agree that your look for the boat birthday party was beyond fantastic. You have it in you; you just need to find the right new look.

And funny you mention looking for some feminine features in your sweaters . I struggle with this too. I don't want to look androgynous either, but nor is my look hyper feminine.

Ahh , the winter doldrums!
Seriously I kinda live in oversized sweaters and black Ponte knit pants . I figure it’s ok not to be perfectly pulled together the in winter.
I turned 61 last month and I can’t even tell you the head game that played with me ... yikes...

Must tell you how much I LOVE those jeans ...I would imagine they would be your workhorse/go with every sweater ,sweatshirt, jacket and top,...those are the kind of items that I think elevate an outfit without a ton of work! I know u have a fabulous shoe collection , so those jeans a sweater , fab shoes and a fun bag ...you rock that look !

Hi
I am
Actually feeling a little off sartorial myself
I will be 47 in a week and I think that is part of it
I am close to 50 ( wow)
Shouldn’t I be more mature in my dress ?
I always imagined I would have a type of elegance that I don’t seem to have reflected in my clothing.
I still love some of my clothing but I am also feeling a bit lost..

It's okay to be down a bit, and to cut yourself some slack.

Seems like the most important move would be to schedule some time with the people you want to see, so ease the missing the party feeling.

My sizes do vary, and I do try and add some feminine when my outfits skew the other way, to keep my look balanced.

Do you need new clothes, or do you need time for a SYC styling session? I often find that I can get by with less clothes than I think if I temporarily remove what is a little tight (or more than a little, let's be real) from my closet. Or at least into the less prominent section. It helps me see new possibilities. I don't know your scarf/jewelry situation-if your wear, if you have, but that can also add the touch needed to balance an outfit.

Cute, interesting jeans.

Also wondering if anyone is feeling similarly?
Not really into astrology, but I was told that Mercury is in retrograde & that causes all sorts of things that throw you off

This is a bit of whinge, self-indulgent post, and also a rehash of stuff I've said before. blah-blah-blah
So a few months ago (when it wasn't so cold) I saw a woman on the street wearing kinda rust to mustard colored wide leg cropped pants, leopard mules, and a fitted black turtleneck. I think she also had a black leather moto jacket if my memory is correct. She looked so just pulled together. I meant to post it then, but forgot.
Just before Thanksgiving I was downtown and saw lots of women wearing skinnies (so confirming Angie's statement about them not going away soon). Mostly cropped and worn with ankle boots showing an inch or two of skin. Some cutout style or perforated boots and modified D'Orsay flats. Very few fashion sneakers.
Lately all I've been wearing is either black leggings or straight leg to boyfriend jeans with a sweater. Many of my sweaters are showing their age. And honestly not very feminine at that, not that being feminine has been end goal for me, but I'm not completely androgynous.
When I heavy I would dress kinda frumpy often. Think baggy sweatshirt and jeans. Then I had lost weight and kept it off for about five years, and here on YLF you saw most of my looks. Unfortunately I've gained weight again. And now I find myself feeling frumpy again.
I'm not even sure of those black and white patched Calvin Klein jeans again. And the stupid expensive Dad sneakers
I have to remember that not everything works on my current body type. I need to purge even more of my closet. I do follow some plus size women on instagram (FYI @the 12ishstyle is awesome).
There are multiple things going on my life, which also isn't helping. I turned 46 back in September, and it's hit me harder than expected. Probably bumping up my social life will inspire me to get dressed again. I'm bummed I'm missing my friend's holiday cocktail party this year because I'm on call.
I did buy some interesting skinny jeans to break things up (find below) And a pink sweater.
I think I've lost track of where I was going with this post.
