Yikes, Angie, I agree - this does seem like an epidemic year for Uggs. I was at the local mall yesterday and I would say that nearly 60-70% of the women (mostly teenagers, actually) were wearing them. What a contrast to Europe where I saw literally one person out of thousands in Uggs!!! And the people in Europe were walking outside not in a nice, cozy mall!

Judy, I certainly didn't mean to sound like the fashion police at a time of grief! I just thought it was an interesting topic for this group, since this is a fashion forum.

In the woman's defense - the Uggs were black.

Tarzy, the last line of your post made me laugh! :)

Maya, that is so sad about your friend.

Angie, your Dad sounds adorable!

I just wanted to add here that for me, when I was the one at the funeral with the loss and the pain of losing someone very close to me suddenly and tragically, what anyone wore to the funeral was the last thing on my mind. It just mattered that they came and gave us hugs and told us what they loved about, in this case, my brother. In the past when I had been "the guest" at a funeral I had fussed about being appropriately dressed...but I found when I was the "host", as I'm sure many of us have been, it kind of put it in another perspective for me. I still fussed a bit about my own clothes...and looked fab of course :), but I didn't know firsthand prior to that, how just showing up was such an important thing.

I used to see it a lot more in the past, Shiny. I think I see it less now because of the season. It might come back when it's warmer again. While it is far from a stylish solution, I don't criticize it because I know how hard it is to find comfortable shoes that stand up to a city walk.

Honestly, I do not let men influence my style OR comfort choices. I used to have a male friend constantly bug me about why I didn't wear heels. It used to make me so angry. I finally shut him up by asking him to run around campus in heels and report back to me with the results. Talking to men about fashion in general just irritates me. It's impossible to have a reasonable discussion with them because their opinions are pretty baseless and are usually just based on what they find sexy. The only men I have met and spoken to who I can have a fun discussion about style and fashion with have been gay. I suspect this is because they see women's bodies more objectively.

I agree with you. I read the same argument in Daniel Vosovic's blog once. Flats have their own issues and will never be as supportive as a pair of sneakers.

I was at a student event Friday night at Harvard. The weather was COLD - 20's with a high wind - with lots of snow and ice still on the ground. Looking at the audience (graduate and undergraduate students), I'd say about 70% of the women were sporting Uggs, and maybe 10% had on Wellies. The remainder were wearing a variety of practical shoewear, including rugged sneakers. I was the only one wearing knee-high leather boots, which I later had to wipe down because they got thoroughly covered in salt. :-(

I did think the Hunter wellies were very stylish! Unfortunately, from the looks of the zappo's web site, they are both too wide for my calves, and also too tall.

Angie and Maya - your posts remind me of wayyyy back when.... in the late 80s'..... my first love, who was the farthest thing from a fashionista, used to hate with a passion women wearing skirts with sneakers to commute to work! (Changing into pointy-toed pumps once they arrived at the office).

Maya, do you see that look in NYC these days? I'm curious! He and I used to argue about this issue: I thought it was thoroughly practical, especially if you had a long walk on city pavement. He thought the women should wear comfortable ballet flats instead.

As for the funeral person, I would *almost* forgive her if it was a cold climate, there was snow on the ground, and the rest of her outfit was respectful. But it's just too much for me to imagine wearing Uggs in 70 degree weather .... WITH cargo pants... that's just UGGHH. (You see, I *do* have standards! LOL!)

There are plenty of Uggs in New York Angie, though I don't think it's as widespread as it is in the rest of the country, but it's hard to go a day without seeing at least one pair. I was the only non-Ugg-wearing participant in an outing I had with 2 of my friends a few months ago, and spent a few minutes hearing them praise the warmth and "cuteness" of their Uggs. I kept my mouth shut since they were my friends, but it was hard.

Maybe I'm just used to it, but I don't really think NYC is all THAT stylish ::ducks::. There are lots of well dressed people, sure, but I think the vast majority aren't really anything spectacular. I see people in sweats and Uggs pretty regularly, and I see blatent violations of PPL all the time. I still think it has a higher style quotient than the rest of the country, but the rest of the country is in pretty poor style shape from what I have seen.

I have never been to Hong Kong, but judging from Angie's posts and the many people I know from HK, it seems like everyone there is very style conscious. It's just not like that in NYC. NYC isn't all rich Manhattanites living in luxury condos. There are also a lot of poor people (more of them every day), commuters, students, and poor immigrants. It makes it impossible for me to see it in such a generalized way.

Lena, I have never seen as many Ugg wearers in Seattle. There is an epidemic this year. I should have bought shares in the company. I wonder if I’ll see as many Uggs in NYC in a few weeks?

Kyle, your story cracks me up and Nicole, I’ll let you in on my Dad’s take on this type of situation. (He’s Dutch, 76 and lives in the Netherlands where older folk wear dress shirts and ties daily). He was appalled when people pitched up smart casually for a farewell party that he attended recently. He said it was disrespectful to be casually turned out. I actually defended the dress code because nowadays smart casual attire takes you virtually anywhere, but I did see my Dad’s point. Also, he continues to mention what a shame it is that women do not where dresses and skirts like they used to. He says ”Everything is pants, pants, pants, Why?”. Like most European men, he wears a formal hat in the Winter time to keep his cute little balding head warm. He ALWAYS takes it off indoors. Anyway, it’s interesting how the older generation thinks. He’d have been disgusted to see Uggs at a funeral.

Ya know...this really is a sad commentary on the state of our country. Honestly. I know there are a lot of antiquated etiquette rules that revolve around clothing (like men should take their hat off indoors)--but the loss of these rules has created a society where anything goes. (BTW, I do think men should take their hats off in restaurants and other public places and I encourage my son to do so--and by encourage--I mean "make him".)

I'm old fashioned in this regard, too. I think we have lost sight of the importance of these rituals and that is reflected in people's dress. Even more, I think fewer and fewer people even attend things like funerals anymore. And I think that's sad, as well.

I'm shocked, but then again I'm not. Maya's comment resonates with me -- why bother showing up to pay your respects if you are going to present yourself in a way that is inherently disrespectful?

Since we are on the topic of inappropriate dress, today I was waiting in line behind two women who were quite excited about heading to a bridal expo. The bride-to-be (probably in her 30s or 40s) looked like she had literally just rolled out of bed (with bed head, no less), and was wearing an oversize T-shirt, cropped sweat pants with elastic around the calves, light blue and white striped socks, and ugg-like flip flops.

What can I say? I don't get it.

That's so disrespectful. I'm very old fashoined when it comes to things like this. I would never wear anything but a skirt or dress to a funeral, except once when I was pg & didn't have an appropriate skirt or dress, so I wore dress pants, and I felt bad about it (even though I was in line with what others were wearing). I prefer to err on the formal side in situations like a funeral.

If you're old I'm also too old... and from the sound of it, I'm younger than the girl in the Uggs. If it were my funeral, I don't think I would be able to rest in peace. You're all my witnesses: NO CROCS OR UGGS AT MY FUNERAL!

Doesn't surprise me though. When I was 18, my neighbor and childhood friend died...not just died, but committed suicide...so it was an especially sad funeral, and her family was utterly devastated (she was only 19). I went wearing black dress pants and a black turtleneck. I know you don't have to wear all black but I had never been to a funeral before so I just played it safe.

I saw some kids who were a little older than me just wearing...basically what they would always wear, including a Hawaiian shirt! Not only that but they were laughing and carrying on. Why even bother showing up?

I'm not kidding. I went to a funeral today, and there was a woman, maybe late 20's or early 30's, wearing cargo pants and Uggs. (It's 70 degrees here today, so I really don't understand the Uggs, let alone wearing them to a funeral.)

Okay. I am now officially 80 years old. "These crazy kids today!"
