I have one dress with a self tie belt. I actually thread the belt through the loops starting at the back, then double them back on themselves, tying a floppy bow at the back (to gather the dress’ fullness) and leave the front to hang straight without any belt across the waist.

Sometimes, depending on the style of the dress, I switch out the self-tie belt with a separate belt that either matches or contrasts. I keep the belt that came with the dress because sometimes that look is better, but it is worth experimenting with other belts you may have.

And asfor tying the belts, I orefer a square knot on a structured dress and a full bow on most others. I've never felt quite right myself in a one-loop tie - maybe I'm not doing it right.

Nice dress, Sarah!

One thing I do sometimes -- for instance with the blue dress Angie shows here -- is not to tie a bow but to double the sash round my waist and tie a simple double knot so that the ends flare out with no bow (which often feels too feminine or fussy for my style). It works if the fabric is stiff enough or crisp enough. When the fabric is floppy, I often tuck the ends underneath the sash so the ends don't show at all. Or you can use safety pins or fashion tape to hold the self belt together rather than tying it.

Yay, dresses!!! Fab, Sarah :)

I do full bows (#1), or like LJP - a bow with ONE loop (#2).

I tend not to do a square knot, personally - but my clients do (#3)

I do a bow with a single loop . I’m not talented enough for anything else , haha. A double bow is too prim for my style preferences .

I just purchased a shirtdress from Boden with a tie-belt (yay! I found a dress!), and realize I have two other dresses with tie-belts, as well. I'm never quite sure how to tie the belts - in bows? In bows with a single loop? In square knots? My bows never turn out quite right, especially when the belts are a bit narrower, and I'm wondering whether anyone has any hacks or tutorials.
