Gahh! That sounds like it was epic...and not fun at all! I had a gum graft on my bottom two front teeth for extreme recession. There was a point where afterward, the area was bleeding a lot and took a while to stop. After that things leveled out, though. Nothing on the scale of what you dealt with, though! Glad you're on the other side of it. Hope you continue to heal swiftly!

Suz, not a rock star...I'd call myself a gum idiot. Diana, you were right. Way too much to do at once. For one thing though, I let it go way too long. My former dentist started mentioning it at least 10 years ago but I was influenced by a friend's experience where it just didn't work, so I was never willing to listen. Should have.

And shouldn't have done it all at once. But, my mother was a world class champion of the "should have, shouldn't have" game and it is poisonous. I'm shutting it down right now! It's done, and I don't have to do it all over again in a few months. I may be looking at some upper ones too next year, and I will not do those all at once.

Advice for you all who said they were in your future:
1) Don't wait too long
2) Don't do 14 at once

Holy cow, Peri! 14 at once?!?!? That’s horrifying and I’m in awe at your fortitude. I feel kind of unqualified to give you advice knowing that - I had ONE done at a time (covering 1-2 teeth each) and that was plenty.

Honestly, Peri -- 14 at once??!!! No wonder you are struggling! That's just sooooooo much!

My first was 2 teeth (top), my second was one or two teeth (I think?) and third was just one tooth.

No wonder it was easier for me! You are a total rock star in the gum department!!

Thanks for all the support! It has definitely been more difficult than I anticipated...but again, I asked for no horror stories so maybe that's my fault! I should have asked for the worst so I wouldn't be surprised.

Opposite of Suz, I do think I am a slow healer on everything so I guess that's what is happening. Also, I had 14 done at once! 100% sure that was too much, but also 90% sure I'm glad I don't have more coming.

I had my first followup Monday and was disappointed to learn the stitches weren't coming out that day. Just a misunderstanding on my part, they have to stay in for a month. I get to brush gently with a baby toothbrush, but unfortunately that hasn't gone well. Yesterday I was more swollen and hurting again. My jaw is loosening up, thank goodness for that, and the roof is incrementally improving.

Overall, sounds like I'm going slower than the norm but still healing. And just being grouchy about it because I thought it would be quicker. I hope I haven't scared anyone too much!

Peri, just saw this now. I'm so sorry it's been a rough recovery. What you're going through sounds like the worst of my three. (My first was painful, and unsightly with stitches (my top front gumline) but bearable; my second was horrible and the donor site healed so slowly and I was bruised all over for weeks and I could cheerfully have shot my very nice, very kind periodontist, and my third was easy-peasy (relatively speaking, I mean.) Well, I might have the order of awfulness wrong, but that is how I remember it today.

Anyway, my donor sites did heal well and smoothly although it took one site more time and that one hurt more than the others. Maybe a bigger graft or it happened to be the side I like to chew on -- I really don't know. In my case, it doesn't feel bumpy now where the grafts are and except for knowing that I had them on my top front teeth, I can't even remember which places are grafted and which are not. (I should note that I do heal well from surgery typically -- all kinds.)

I think your jaw will go back to normal once you are able to eat normally etc.

Wishing you luck with continued healing. And most of all with keeping your teeth!

So glad you are on the other side and healing now! I had a single gum graft done in April and it threw me for a loop. I seriously thought it was going to be like getting a crown on. Boy, was I wrong. In bed for 2 days, soft/mushy/liquid foods for a month, swollen (but not bruised thankfully). It was terrible especially because it was just one tiny area! Goodness, give me a face lift at least!!! I have seen the writing on the wall for family members that didn’t take care of their teeth and I am glad to have been proactive about this. I did loose 8 pounds and it really sparked a change in my way of eating and in my thoughts on how I want to age (what I can control anyway!).

Yikes, it sounds like you’ve been through an ordeal. At least the worst is behind you.
My donor sites have healed completely and I don’t remember them being particularly noticeable once the cuts healed up. But as I told you I only had one side done at a time (and I think they sound like they were smaller than yours) so it might take yours longer to go back to normal.

I think the bumpy vs smooth thing has to do with how thick the grafts are - mine are not anywhere visible unless I physically pull my lips down so they did thicker ones because (I think) the thicker ones are more likely to be effective. They did tell me that if I found it too intrusive or bumpy they could shave it down (?) a bit after it had healed, but it doesn’t bother me.

Ugh, sorry to hear its living up to the unpleasant expectations. I hate when that happens. Colonoscopy prep was the opposite--not as bad as I had imagined. Thanks for the update and good to know about the donor option---I never knew about that. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. i hope crunchy foods are in your immediate future. Hugs!

Can't sugar coat...it's been an ordeal. Diana was right, too much at once. On the other hand, I don't want to do it again so it's possibly a good thing I did all at once. Look at me, still second guessing my decision long after it's over. It's a gift.

I've been mostly smoothies and mashed food for 18 days. I haven't lost any weight thanks to a new obsession with non-dairy ice cream. (So Delicious brand cashew milk Snickerdoodle...OMG!). I also had a good protein powder for all the smoothies. So I'm not all wimpy, but I really want some crunchy things now!

One thing I know...no one is cutting open the roof of my mouth ever again. If I need any more they will all be donor or they won't be done. It is basically healed, but it still feels bizarre. The whole left side is raised up and more squishy feeling. Not super painful, just freaky and sensitive. Diana and Suz...does it get back to normal? I hate this feeling.

So far I'm having Diana's bumpy results instead of Suz's smooth, can't tell any different results. And my jaw on both sides feel weirdly tight, like a big smile is uncomfortable. I'm hoping that will improve over time too. Stitches come out tomorrow so maybe that will help.

Sorry I'm sounding so negative. I know some of you were saying you needed them too. I hope I'm just at the not quite healed and irritated about it phase, and that I can tell you more positive things in about a month.
