Hi everyone, sorry I've taken so long to reply.

Thanks Suz, Rabbit, Kiwigal, Momo, Lisa, Jenn, RobinF, unfrumped

Staysfit...great comments, thanks!

DonnaF I tend to agree about Anthro being a bit overpriced, but about half of the things I've got there have been real workhorses and last for several years. The other half not so much I think if you are really good about choosing and/or wait for sales it's a great place to shop.

That top looks really nice on you! Much as I love gray (for myself), I can't imagine the color looking as nice on you as the second top. Plus, it didn't look like it came in Petites. Finally, I've always felt that Anthro is a bit over-priced and only barely okay if the item is on sale.

What Suz said!

I have succumbed to s few polyester shells but I keep swearing off, or , aim to focus on something like a print that " makes" an outfit, blending colors or being sleek beneat a jacket or the right length to connect topper and pants, ,or solves an orphan outfit problem. Partly
because I don't wear much sleeveless alone. So I would only get the print # 2 if it ticked some special boxes. The neckline in # 1 is too low for me but I would like the fabric for summer.

I love the way the floral top looks on you! I was going to say that I prefer the floral top. In my life, casual but elegant/refined is the goal and this type of top paired with a pair of cropped flair jeans is the perfect way to achieve that mix. The material, even though it is poly, looks more refined and elegant than the material of the first top which looks a bit wrinkled in the picture. Like others, I also worry about the neckline of the first top. I can see how in your situation, this top would feel too formal for your current lifestyle, but you really did a great job styling it and deserve our kudos!

I admire your dedication to stick to a plan and purchase for your lifestyle.

Wow, so many great responses!!! I really appreciate all your inputs!

I bought the floral one because I liked it as a dressy top and the colors were a little outside what I normally choose. I ordered a bunch of stuff so the shipping would be free, and I live pretty close to a JCP store so returns are easy too. I expected not to like the fabric because JCP uses a lot of really inexpensive fabrics that look and feel awful to me, but for $16 was willing to give it a shot and I was ordering some white bags I wanted to look at also. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it fit and how much I liked the print, and the fabric is totally ok. I don't mind polyester. It turns out to be a bit too dressy for "everyday" for me, so I have not worn it yet. I like the style a lot and that's what led me to consider the Anthro one.

I'm leaning toward NOT buying the Anthro one because I'm trying to wean myself off "very casual", although it could certainly be dressed up a bit. It is fascinating to me that two tops with very similar cuts can be "such different animals" as put by Beth Ann and detailed in the very extensive analysis steps by Suz.

I did try on the floral one with white jeans, here are the pics, not sure they show the fit all that well but a PM is absolutely perfect on me. If it came it other colors I'd buy them - the fit is that perfect. I tend to wear a 10P or 12P in most things. I'm 5'1" and quite short waisted. I just looked it is still available on JCP.com.

RachyLou thanks for the vote of confidence about my ability to make it off-planet when the apocalypse hits And you have a point about grey on me. I LOVE it but have to choose either light or pretty dark greys or I look washed out.

I guess I am with the majority in preferring #1, because I think the solid color showcases the overlapping design feature better, and because I prefer the more casual fabrication. If I were shopping for me, I would wish it was a little longer (and less expensive, but don't we always).

Interesting, the YLF app displays Finds in the opposite order. I was quite confused reading this thread at first!

Anyway, out of these two, I would pick the Anthropologie version for a few reasons: natural fiber, more open neckline, more modern looking, and I prefer the solid color to this particular print. I'm not super-keen on the intentionally-aged look, though, because I feel like that would limit the versatility for me.

I came across a similar (but way more expensive) top on Nordstrom recently that I like a lot, despite the fact that it doesn't come in my size. This one is silk, v-neck, and has a pattern I like.

I like both. If you were packing, the gray would be the workhorse that went with everything and the print would be the happy item you take for a change of pace. So, where is your wardrobe hole? And does one of them make you happier than the other?

For me it would depend on trying them on, and on personal coloring. I'd avoid #1 because heathered/stonewashed gray or terracotta isn't a good color on me, bolder/hi contrast colors and patterns work better. Heathering/stonewashing in general tends to look bad near my face and arms and highlight imperfections in my complexion and makes uneven freckles/farmers tans more noticeable unless the color is a really saturated bright. For someone with low contrast coloring it might be different.

I think it depends on how you wear it. For example, nearly all of my tops are printed because I think I look better in prints near my face, and my entire wardrobe is built around printed tops and solid bottoms. That said, gray is a very basic and versatile color. If you think it will get a lot more wear than top #2, then it would be the better choice.

I prefer 1. To my eye it has a more modern and edgy look which I prefer.
Both are pretty though!

To me, these are two different animals entirely. I would likely not buy the Anthro top. While I love strolling though the store for inspiration, I'm on a tight budget, and I save my splurges for quality construction and fabrication -- usually in a structured garment like a jacket, or good shoes. Honestly, I think Walmart tops would last longer, and I see far too many puckered seams, garments cuts off the grain of the fabric, and hanging threads when I browse through the racks!

As for the JCP top -- I have to hold it in my hand and try it on, and I only buy online if it's a necessity. Like the others, I think this top would be more figure flattering. Unlike Suz, I need a little more openness in the neckline. A close fitting jewel neck does not flatter my bust. I like the print, and I'm a big fan of dark sleeveless florals for summer. A print top on a dark background doesn't show stains or sweat, and I don't need a scarf or lots of accessories for interest. Do I tire of prints faster? Probably, but at this price point, getting a couple of seasons wear is fine. Is the fabrication a problem? Sometimes.....that's why I need to touch and try on!

hmmmm….well i like #1 because its knit….and i love knits, IMO it's really easy to dress up or down…where as i think of blouses as well, dress up….but that's just me….and well i'm a big fan of solids….not that there's anything wrong with prints, its just well solids are well, solid, and therefore, for someone with a limited imagination, i.e. me, easier to wear.

The others have all raised excellent points and I can only echo them.

First, I would need to see both in person -- what you see is not always what you get!

But based on the appearance and what your have said alone, it would be a tossup for me. #1 looks, not only more casual, but a bit more "current" -- but that could be styling on the model. #2 looks a bit dressier, and possibly even "prissy" (on the wrong person) and not dated, exactly, but certainly more tailored and retro.

What I like about #1:

Solid neutral (useful essential in my closet)

Fluid

Natural fabric (great in the heat)

Versatile (can dress up or down to a degree with right components)

What I worry about with #1 (for me)

Neckline too low and loose, not my most flattering

Might be too fluid (i.e. overwhelm my frame)

Might be too casual in person for my style.

What I like about #2:

Very neat armhole and neckline fit

Would look great with white bottoms

Dressier but can be somewhat dressed down

Retro-pretty print

What I worry about with #2 (again, for me)

Poly fabric too hot to wear in my non air conditioned world

Might tire of print after a year or so.

Black a bit less flattering on me than grey, but this is not a deal breaker as black works better on me than it used to, and it is sleeveless (there fore breaks up black with skin) and can be worn with white.

I can tell you that fit is always my number one priority...and I might overlook Top #1 entirely because based on the photo I would assume that it would not fit my body type particularly well. I might be wrong...and if I really wanted/ needed a grey knit cotton top, I would potentially order it to try it out (with free returns and delivery) in the dim hope that it might work. Because I like the overall style. I might also reach out to the forum in a case like this and ask if Angie or anyone had seen it fitted on a real body in person.

Meanwhile, I would be much more confident that #2 would look good on me. I might not order because I have no need for another print top (though I like the style a lot and now I have it in my Finds, you devil!). Or I might decide that another poly top for summer is just plain silly. Or, again, I might reach out to the forum and ask -- anybody tried this on?
