I prefer the fit of the smaller size but the length of the bigger size. I find the dress a bit boring, not as down on it as your husband is though. It looks really comfy and I like the colour. If I were wearing it I would be jazzing it up in some way, maybe with red- interesting boots or tights, metallics, interesting jacket or jewellery etc. I don't pay that much attention to what my husband likes, I am dressing to please myself. At the same time he has got good at knowing what I like and sometimes has good suggestions for shoes, earrings etc so I do pay attention to that. So if he really didn't like something that I had a chance to return, I'm not sure what I'd do.
