Thank you for the input, ladies, it is much appreciated. Angie, from now on I will ignore that "runs small" reviews too, especially in a store that I generally find to run a bit on the large side.

So here is my final decision. I will keep the tomato pants at the current short-ish length as I find it much less leg shortening that usual cropped lengths. Plus, I have spent lots of time in them taking tons of photos for possible outfit combinations (two posts are already up), so they relaxed a little and thus became a bit longer. When it comes to the skirt, I agree with everyone who says that shrinking would be risky and alterations not worth it. So I will put it on Style Exchange tonight and if there is no interest within or so days I will consign it to a local store.

The pants are too fun! They do look to be on the shorter side of things, but I don't think they look *too* short. I would recommend wearing them as is for a while, and if they bother you, then go ahead with letting down the hem.

As for the skirt, I wouldn't try shrinking it, because all those different fabrics are going to shrink at different rates, and you might end up with an ill-fitting garment. I find that material that is predominantly polyester doesn't shrink much anyway. I don't think it's going to shrink enough to be worth it.

If it were me, I would wear the skirt as is with untucked tops for the time being. If you discover that you really like the skirt and don't get tired of it, I would then take it to a tailor for alterations.

I hate it when I listen to the reviews and order the wrong size! Grr.

OH! The Loft. *slaps forehead*

(Actually, I ignore most reviews that say items runs small because then, chances are high they will be a good narrow fit for me. I DON"T ignore reviews that say items are short though. That's a biggie).

I don't think the skirt is worth the alteration. It will drive you crazy wearing it that size as you stride - slipping and sliding all over the place. You might lose length if you tumble dry it.

Thank you so much for your input, ladies. Now I am convinced that the skirt is indeed too big and that the shrinking attempt is not a good idea. I may inquire about tailoring but considering the complicated construction I doubt I will go that way. I will most likely try to sell it or consign it to one of the local stores.

I am also very happy to hear that this shorter length of crops may work with flats too as it really opens the possibilities when it comes to shoes.

I like both of these. Like some of the others, I also think the pants would be a good length with flats. I don't think the skirt looks too big but if it feels too big it may not work for you. It does sound like a lot of work to alter it with lining and piping, probably not worth that.

The pants are beautiful- and so is the skirt, shame about the fit. I'm lazy, and think selling l is less work than alterations here. I'd pass on trying to shrink it. My guess is it would just get a little bit shorter.

Tomato pants look great. I like the length; it looks good with the shoes you have here and I think will also work with flats for a change.

The skirt looks a bit big when tucked but ok when untucked. However, I feel like it will probably be uncomfortable and rotate a lot. (I actually often buy skirts a size up on purpose so they hang lower, because of my short waist, but that does not work with pencil skirts. One of several reasons I don't wear them.). Anyway, I think you'll be really lucky if the shrinking works. for one thing, the waistband and body of the skirt are probably not cut along the same direction, and many fabrics will shrink differently along the grain and against it. Plus there is the added complication of the lining. The suggestion to clip it at the waist (you an use a binder clip!) and see how it fits is a good one because a simple waist alteration would be easy whereas a waist/hip alteration probably would not.

I agree that 10 photos is a good number. I also prefer only 1 or 2 questions per post; this is more important than number of photos to me. Too many different, complicated questions = overwhelming and I'm likely to put off answering. I'm more likely to answer if you post several, simpler posts because I can do one at a time. I guess I feel like I should be able to read the post, keep the main question in mind, look at photos, and formulate an answer without getting confused, having to figure out what question goes with what photo, etc).

For what it's worth, I have some cropped pants from Loft that I've tried to shrink and they won't. I fell like they do a good job pre shrinking the fabric. The skirt might not shrink, either.

Put me down as another one who loves the pants AND the skirt, but I agree the skirt is too big.

Like Chris, I would hesitate to shrink the skirt because of the composition of the skirt fabric and the lining. Why not investigate how much it would cost for alterations? Piping and lining aren't always a deal-breaker when it comes to simple alteration like taking in the waist. Even if you added a few dollars to the price, you'd still have a sensational skirt at a bargain price.

If the alteration doesn't seem feasible, then I'd put the skirt on Style Exchange and let someone else enjoy it.

Thank you very much for your input Suz, Joy, Angie And Chris!

I am glad to hear that this length of pants works, too, and now I can leave them as is and start playing with making a capsule for them.

Suz, I am afraid that you are probably right when you say that the skirt moving around would annoy me a lot. Sigh...
Joy, the skirt is lined, and there is some piping too, so I the alterations might be a bit involved.
Angie, the skirt is actually from Loft, not J Crew, but probably the same thing about the reviews applies. Since you are suggesting me to sell it, that probably means that it is too big as is. I guess I need to consider if I want to experiment with the dryer or just put it on Style Exchange.

Chris, those are very wise words about the skirt. It is not just the waist, it is the whole waist to hip line. Maybe I should just sell it after all.

I agree with Suz on the red pants...try unstitching one leg and see how it looks. I'm still learning about pant lengths but it looks ok to me. Love that color!

On the skirt, I'd think twice before trying to shrink it in the dryer. You said it has a lining and the lining is a different fabric from the body of the skirt, so the lining and the skirt could shrink different amounts which could be a real problem.

My vote would be to first do the following experiment to see if taking the waist in would be enough to make it fit overall: use one of those alligator clips to "pin it" in the back and try standing/sitting etc. If the skirt still seems to big on the sides and floats around, then I'd tend to agree with Suz it may never fit right. If it does not float around then you could have the waist taken in.

WOW, Tanya. The cropped tomato pants look KILLER Sensational. Good job getting the size right. I like the shorter cropped length for a change. I have those too - see Japanese suit outfit below.

I've learned to ignore J.Crew reviews when they say things run small. I ordered a size 2 in my tweed sheath dress that said it ran small, when a 00 is what fit perfectly. I usually wear a 0 so I think the dress ran big! That seems to be happening over and over again.

That skirt is sooo pretty. Why don't you sell it on Style Exchange?

The red ankle pants look great on you. You will have fun with them. The skirt looks like a a great piece too. I'd first see if it shrinks. Then try wearing it as it is with the top out. If it moves around, have it altered if it earns a place in your closet. I don't think a waist adjustment should be very difficult. Is the skirt lined?

Tanya, what amazing prices for these two fab items! I LOVE the tomato trousers, and how fab that they fit in petite! I am awful at judging lengths, but why don't you untack one hem and see how it looks to compare -- you can always sew it right back up. They look fantastic on you.

As for the skirt, since it is no return, why not try to shrink it a bit and see what happens? If it's still not the right fit, then donate. It looks very nice on you but my own experience with skirts that do not fit is that they ride around, twist, and generally make my life miserable -- not worth it for such a small investment, IMO.

Re photos: -- I think 10 to 15 is the most I can handle in a post especially if there are questions about the outfits. If it is a retrospective of outfits I can handle more, but if it's to evaluate and compare, I can only handle a certain number.

Last week I took a big risk and ordered two bottoms from Loft on final sale. Both the cropped pants and pencil skirt were meant as refreshers for my summer stint in a business casual office. They were extremely inexpensive ($30 total for both) so I thought the risk was worth it. They arrived last night and here is how I fared, with some questions for you wise ones.

Item #1 is a pair of tomato red cropped kick flare pants, a super wild card as that color is very unflattering on me, considering I suit cool tones only. However I really love how tomato red pairs with unexpected colors such as blush and light blue as shown in Angie's ensembles, so I decided to give the pants a try. I ordered them in 2P since the regular size was sold out. Considering that a I have really long rise and shirt legs, would you believe that they fit perfectly? They come just below my belly button. I have two questions about them:
1. The length - they are 4" above my ankle bone and I am almost wondering if they are too short - a rarity for my short legs with cropped pants. There is some extra material in the hem so I could let them down an inch.
2. Posting logistics - I have been trying them out with various tops and shoes in order to make a capsule similar to Angie's Monday post. It turns out that I will have lots of photos to post, especially if I am to include photos with or without toppers. What is the maximum amount of photos you think one can reasonably look through in the post? Should I split my capsule building into couple of posts with no more then 10-15 photos per post; or is it better to have one huge post?

Item #2 is a navy patterned pencil skirt with piping and rounded hem which reminded me of a similar one in black & white from J Crew that was an Angie pick recently. Unfortunately, I did not guess the size right this time. The reviews stated that the skirt runs very small, one or even two sizes, so I sized up to size 2. As it turns out, that size is pretty big on me and the skirt rides low on my hips instead of hitting me on my waist, it is about 2" below my narrowest waist point. In #3 and #4 you can see how it looks with a simple shell tucked in, and in #5 I am holding up the extra material in the back to show how it is supposed to look if it fit right. #6 and #7 show the skirt worn with untucked/welted cropped sweater. I am wondering how big you think it looks and whether it is still wearable and which way (final sale). Would you:

Wear it as is anyway, both with tops tucked in and untucked, since you think it doesn't look that big

Wear it as is only with untucked tops that conceal the fit around the waist

Have it altered

Try to shrink it in the dryer - the material is thick non-stretchy and textured, 61% polyester, 28% rayon and 11% cotton, with cotton lining

Donate it and call it a learning experience.
