I couldn't picture this set-up--haven't done it for awhile. So I just threw on my boyfriend's flannel with my own jean jacket on top. Looked pretty good, regardless of whether collar was in or out. So one option is to adopt a devil-may-care attitude and let the collars lay where they may...as if you're a writer or photographer.

Indigoprint Food for thought! Not sure I will cut the collars off but what a good idea when wearing a jacket to fold the collar in if it is not co-operating.

Another thing I do especially for summer is cut the upper collar off and just leave the neck band and then I button that neck band button. I leave the edge raw cuz I like that look . It fits smoothly under the topper.
You could experiment by folding the collar under it should cooperate as it had such a distinct seam line.

I try to avoid this if at all possible, even though I have short hair... If I do wear the look I tend to button to the top, otherwise I end up tugging everything around constantly.

I keep my inside collar inside it takes some attention but not more than rolling the sleeves etc. I do not usually button the top button but that is a good look too.

What notsaf and Angie said -- I sometimes do pop or stand both collars! You can also add a brooch to keep the collar on the shirt done up all the way and add interest. It can still be a super casual look -- I used to wear a white button front shirt with cutoffs and always wore that shirt done up all the way -- it was boxy and that is the key.

But as suntiger and Sal report, it won't work for all -- depends on personal style and various body type modifiers. Best on those with short (or tied back) hair, longer neck, narrow shoulder line, regular to small bust...

I don’t wear double collars. I only have one button down shirt and one shirt dress with collars. I only wear them solo or with a coat or maybe the red leather jacket that I removed the collar from.

I have a short neck, lots of hair and broad shoulders though so I don’t fully button my shirts.

I like that fully buttoned look but it’s one I leave to others.

I do up ALL the buttons, right up to the shirt collar. Tuck it neatly under a jacket - or pop the shirt collar like a tuxedo shirt with all the buttons done up.

Do not layer it over! Unless you want that very particular look: in which case, rock it. I wear many double collars, and the way that collars play with each other varies from shirt to shirt and jacket to jacket, so you'll have to play around to find out how things lay. But Dee's suggestion is right: the "look" is more buttoned-up and boxy than it used to be. And yes, I sometimes pop the back of two collars!

My two button ups are silky fabric, so I tuck the collar under the jacket. Popping collars looks right on some people- Angie and Suz come to mind, but feels fake and try hard for my own style.

It depends!

Sometimes I avoid it, for all the reasons you mention.

Sometimes I wear them together and they work just fine! I think it helps to have short hair because that is one less thing interfering with the area, if that makes sense.

If the shirt is crisp, the collar usually lies fine inside the collar of the jacket (not overlapping). You can also wear the inside shirt buttoned all the way -- and undo it if you take the jacket off.

If the shirt is silky, it collapses in nicely and tends to work in a different way.

I often pop the collar on a denim jacket, yes. Not always, though.

It can be a lot going on, visually, though.

Another solution -- for those situations where the jacket is a topper I intend to take off when I arrive at the destination -- I will wear a scarf that hides the collar of the shirt but fills in the neckline of the jacket.

Apparently the current look would be to buttoned it all the way to the top , so no real layering of collars would actually be happening, therefore no wayward collars this way.

Hello Again

So I am planning to wear button down shirts this summer. I have not really worn button downs for years except for dipping my toe in this trend last summer. What I want to know is should I wear my button down with say a denim jacket that also has a collar what do you do with the inside shirt collar? Do you layer it over the jacket? I find that look a bit old-fashioned but maybe it is trendy again with the 70s revival. I find if I just leave it under it looks a bit frumpled and messy. Also do you pop your collars? So in a nutshell if you do wear double collars please tell me how. Thanks!!
