Una, did you check out the J.Crew pics? Add in your slouchy pants and UWP footwear,

Sara, FIT and HOW you wear the set. I love it with the slouchy trousers and shirt. Add in trendy footwear. Have fun experimenting.

I do see the button down under the shell as modern :-)

I see the fit of the shell and cardi are close -- not the comfy cardi fit where it blouses a bit and gathers back in at the banded bottom or cuff.

Anyone else see any other specifics?

I might have to take myself to JCrew and play with their sweaters A couple nice sweater set FFBOs would be pretty handy this winter.

Thank you, Angie, for the explanation and visuals!!

Angie, I don't love the classic twinset either. Just trying to figure out if there is a way to edge it up. You've got me thinking.

This twinset styling and fit looks modern to my eye:

http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca...../29350.jsp

This cardigan....

http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca...../96024.jsp

.....paired with this shell worn as a set... was snug, cheeky and stunning - to Una's point:

http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca...../96021.jsp

Sorry, ladies. I'm not loving the traditional classic twinset. The item has to be worn in a modern way in order for it to look great to my eye. I LOVE the classics - you know that - and would wear these J.Crew incarnations in a heartbeat.

MNSara, I agree... maybe the shrunken look makes it modern? I think you'd have to be twig-like to pull it off in a shrunken style.

Interesting and timely. I have a twin set riding in my car to return to TJMaxx. When I put it on, I really like it - for fit and colorblocked colors. But when I think 'twin set', I packed it up and put it in the car.

Cardi: http://www.loehmanns.com/Women.....rdigan.htm

Shell: http://www.loehmanns.com/Women.....-Shell.htm

I tried to copy the pics, but can't do it :-(

Also, when I look at twin sets on JCrew, I'm not seeing what makes them more modern - help!! The shells look pretty much like any other shell. The cardis are the Jackie or the Tippi? Tippi is 3/4 sleeve. Is that the difference?

http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca.....ategory=-1

I still have a lot of twin sets. I break them up, and wear the cardigans over interesting blouses. The shells work well with a denim jacket or blazer as a layer. The cardigans get a lot more mileage than the shells, so I won't be buying anymore twin sets.

I buy lots of those Charming Cardis for both warm and cold seasons. But it can look matronly and boring when paired with the matching shell. But, the cardis have a great fit and are plain enough to take on the look of whatever they're paired with. With a fine white button down they become modern. With a tank top, jeans a a cool belt they can take on a an edgier feel. I am wearing a baby blue one in my profile photo paired with dark wash jeans, funky sandals and a cross body bag. Although you can't see all that in in the pic.

qpswan..you cracked me up with your post. I would say that Mrs. Bush had it going on with her twin set and pearls and it was perfectly "her". But you are right, probably not a style goal. LOL

As a Modern Classic, I love twin sets and am eagerly awaiting a package from Lands End (burgandy)...

When I think twin sets, I am inspired by Grace, Marilyn and Audrey not Mrs. Bush.

I also added a picture from their site.

I will check out J Crew as well. I guess I don't think of them because the closest J Crew store is over 45 minutes away. Of course, if tehre were a Nordstrom within 45 minutes, I would find a way to get there . . .

This depends ENTIRELY on the cut and fabrication of the twin set. J.Crew twin sets are cheeky and gorgeous.

Are twinsets still fashionable, or are they better left to Barbara Bush?

I was checking out some at Talbots. They have a rich wine color and a deep green, two colors that look really good on me and I don't see too often. I know they are two of this fall's colors, so they may not repeat next year. I was thinking in a plain twinset, they

I would pair them with Straight leg trousers until I can find pencil skirts work. Even then, not sure how long the skirts will stay in rotation when the snow starts.
