I've enjoyed seeing Rachel Zoe's TV show, just to see how she pulls outfits together, and what she looks for when shopping for clients, etc. I don't really like her style - too boho for my personal taste - and I find her personality grating, but yeah, I enjoy watching the whole styling process... as filtered through the RealityTV lens.

I can't tolerate television long enough to even pay attention to style.

I don't find movies too inspiring either. I'm fairly sure my taste in movies has something to do with that though.

Phoebe, I know what you mean about much of Gossip Girl being too "uniform" or teen-based. BUT... there are also things that knock my socks of like:

I like the styles of both the clothing and accessories that the ex-wife wore on 'Gary Unmarried' They were things you'd see IRL, and she was always so stylish!

I need to watch Parenthood - have heard it is really good. Vani, I never would have guessed Garcia would be your muse. That girl rocks! She is an excellent example of individualism.

I'm sort of blanking on this topic at the moment because my cable box is broken and I haven't been watching too much.

I do like Serena's style a lot. Sometimes I like Blair's but it is usually too prissy. I also like Lily's on certain occasions - so well put together.

I need to think more on this subject!

I have really been inspired by the use (or overuse) of jewelery on Bonnie Bedelia's character, Camille Braverman on NBC's Parenthood.
http://www.nbc.com/parenthood/.....tem=121068

I don't know if it's inspiring, but the costuming on Glee can be really fun to watch.

I found Gossip girl very disappointing. It was announced as a fashion-inspirating show, but apart from Serena all I see is ridiculous school uniform stuff on twenty-somethings... No inspiration.

In general, TV is very inspiring to me. SATC would be the obvious. At them moment, there is only Mad Men, but a few years ago, there were Friends, Ally Mc Beal, nearly all the sitcoms had at least one pretty woman.

Without putting too much thought into it, the one character that does come to mind is Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds. It helps that I adore the character and the show Her outfits are bold, feminine, alluring and sometimes OTT but it keeps me working on pushing my boundaries and embracing different looks and styles. Girl's got attitude!

I also adore Paget Brewster's makeup on the show.

I have to admit that I generally find movies much more visually inspiring than TV.

I don't really watch Gossip Girl but I think it's got the most style appeal - to me, at least - of anything on the tube. It's aimed at the teen crowd (of which I'm NOT a part) but I can definitely appreciate the good styling. Sometimes, if it's on, I'll turn off the volume but keep it on in the background while I'm reading the paper or something like that, so I can occasionally glance up and see what everyone's wearing and how they've done their makeup : )

Hmm...well my obvious one is Sex and the City...I also idolised Dawson's Creek girls when I watched it in my early teens...right now...I can't quite think of any show in particular that really grabs me fashion-wise...but yeah, I definitely think TV can inspire style!

We've touched on the TV Show "Mad Men" in past threads.

Are you seeing characters on other tv shows, or "personalities" (like newscasters, talk show hosts, etc) who knock your socks off? And if so, do you just look admiringly or do you find yourself "actively inspired" by them (eg. do you sometimes try to emulate their style)?

I read about 6 months ago that the biggest look being requested in hair salons was hair like the character Serena Van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl. This was the quotation from the NYTimes:
" ...coveted: extra long, ultra-shiny blond with a mussed-up tussle frolicking through the ends.
“It’s aspirational hair,” said John Barrett, whose salon sits atop Bergdorf Goodman in Midtown Manhattan.
Clients, Mr. Barrett said, “don’t just want the hair, they want the life.”

The article compares this current hair fad with other TV-inspired 'dos of the past, like "The Rachel" based on the hair of a character from "Friends" and Farah Fawcett's blond shag. It's a fun reminder that TV both reflects and inspires what goes on in the world of style.
