As a long necked person I love turtle necks in the cold months. But I am often frustrated by long horizontal wrinkles across my shoulders below neck level. These are caused by my very square, no-slope shoulders. Very hard to find T-necks to fit!

I love turtlenecks...I have a long neck, short hair and a small bust, so I guess that's why it works. I esp. Like a t-neck under a blazer with a silk square , folded on the bias, wrapped around the neck. And, living in the northeast, there is nothing as cozy as a cashmere t-neck on a frigid day.

Love turtlenecks, but they don't love me back.
I have long, skinny neck, short hair, smallish bust. No double chin.
Most turtlenecks do not fit me - there is generally some excess fabric around the neck which only serves to emphasis my skinny neck. As Angie would say NEXT!

I encourage you to continue wearing high/tight turtlenecks! If I remember correctly, I started liking turtlenecks on cheerleaders in high school and have LOVED seeing them on women ever since!

They make women look so sexy and serious, especially when they look like librarians and teachers when wearing glasses!

Yes! Absolutely. I find that little bit of looseness under my chin drives me batty with a turtleneck now. I don't even wear the short ones that I used to be able to tolerate on me. Cowls of various sizes all seem to work wonderfully, though, and they do give me the cozy feeling and warmth that I want in cooler weather.

Good post, Deb. Now that I think of it, I can clear out a drawer full of turtlenecks that I haven't worn for a couple of winters!

Turtlenecks are simply not comfortable for me. The feel of something against/around my neck is suffocating, and they accentuate apple tendencies. A modest v-neck is so much more flattering and comfortable that I never even consider turtlenecks anymore.

I'm so glad you posted about this - like Krista, YLF has inspired me to revisit turtlenecks for myself. I have a pretty squat, short neck, I think, at least for my height. I have tended to wear my hair in a shoulder length bob or in a shorter, shaggy crop most of my adult life. It took me a long time to realize that when I wear my hair short, it definitely makes my neck look longer and more delicate, and I feel like I can wear higher collars in general. Mock necks aren't for me, but I recently tried on a chunky knit sweater with a looser, generous but high collar and was surprised that it worked so well.

I think only if the neck is tight. If there's a little extra room in the neck (like there usually is in a thick sweater turtleneck) they are good for a double/saggy chin.

As a busty apple with a short full neck, I can't explain it, but certain turtlenecks are one of my best looks. It requires a more structured neck that hits in the right spot, and a precise shoulder fit, for me. I think it actually frames my face instead of dragging it down.

Great post, deb! Thanks! As you, I used to wear turtlenecks a lot and loved them, but not the last years (only as gear wear though). I find an open neckline easier to wear when thinking of double chin enhancement, but maybe it's more in my mind than IRL The replies here are super interesting and I'm tanking notes thanks again for posting :-)

Just curious - does big scarves also enhance double chin or don't they because they are worn a bit looser *around* the neck?? (I live in big scarves in the winter!)

I used to wear them all the time as well and then discovered the body-type theory that my body type doesn't look good in them. While this is somewhat true, YLF has challenged me to revisit my ways of thinking and I think it's more the style of turtleneck that doesn't look that great on me. I recently found a cowl-style turtleneck (see below) that is actually quite flattering on me and even more so because I've realized I should be wearing petites in tops, so the length doesn't swallow me. I used to wear turtlenecks that fit very close on the neck and that, ultimately, is not flattering for me at all.

I'm glad I've challenged my thought process on it because it's really cold here in the winter and it can be flat-out uncomfortable to not have something cozy around your neck. I will continue to look for styles like this in the future - I'm just happy to have found something that works!

Short answer: Yeah. Especially if it's a black or other soul-sucking color turtleneck.

Long answer: it depends on the turtleneck! As we all know, since I complain endlessly about it, I'm short, all over. Including my neck. And the vast majority of turtlenecks (99.9%) are scaled for taller people with longer necks. Not even talking giraffe necks... I'm just talking normal size necks... mine is proportionately short for a proportionately short person. So, flattery aside, the majority of turtlenecks annoy me to no end because there's just too much fabric and they .. well... ensconce my entire chin. LOL

Every now and then I can find a t-neck that is scaled just right, and even though I do have the whole saggy aging face thing going on, it works fine. There was a time in my life when I was on the "hunt" and I built up a collection. I have 4 t-necks that fit the bill. But then I stopped hunting - and also stopped wearing them. Because of problem #2... once I solved the neck issue, I realized they make me look too chesty.

That said, though I do think I look far better in a V or scoop neck, I've got aging skin on my chest too. Which now needs covering up. So, if it's not one thing.. darnit, it's another!!

Right now I'm playing around with crew necks that are cut lower than your usual crew neck. Low enough, they elongate the neck, but still high enough they cover the aging decollete. Seems this season there are more options in this area? Or is it just me?

I have a long neck so that is really not an issue. I think it is more of me just not liking the look anymore because of the body change. I am sure this is not uncommon, just uncommon for me. Maybe if I wear them more often my memory will adjust to the new look.

I used to be addicted to turtle necks until about 7 years ago when I had my body type analyzed and was told to ban them because they would emphasize my top-heaviness. And the stylist was right!!! I now avoid them unless they have ruching, a split (more like a mandarin collar), or unless i am skiing/skating/freezing. I do not miss them at all.

Like Kari I find that it depends on the height of the neck. I have a short neck and am also self-conscious about my chin, but a mock turtleneck seems to work for me, where a standard one is just too much material on too little neck.

Well, I think that the bulk and height of a turtleneck can accentuate a shorter neck, and can certainly bring more focus to the lower part of your face. I think that's partly why Angie, who does have a longer neck, looks so good in turtlenecks. But it doesn't mean that those of us with shorter necks or less firm chins *can't* wear them!

I have a very large bust, short neck, double chin - and really, regardless of my weight, I've always had a weak/recessed chin (though thankfully it's much better than it would have been without years of braces and headgear as a child!) So for years I thought that turtlenecks were totally out of the question. However, I found some mock-necks last fall that I love. I especially like to wear them as layering pieces (under dresses or lower-necked tops) or with large necklaces or scarves to visually draw the eye lower.

Also, check out this video on Inside Out Style about wearing bright colors to de-emphasize a double chin - I was amazed at the difference that the dark vs. light color makes! http://www.insideoutstyleblog......ppear.html

There has been quite a bit of discussion on turtleneck tops lately and I was wondering if anyone else feels the way I do about them. When I was younger I wore them all of the time, but now that I am getting old (er), I find that turtlenecks just accentuate my sagging chin. (dropped face syndrome?) Athough I love them I have not worn them for five years or so. Your feelings?
