The J. Crew tissue turtle (polo) neck is really exclusively meant for layering. It's thin and would not be flattering on its own. I like them because it's so warm down here, anything heavier would just be too hot to wear for most of the winter. In the catalog they just have two layered for style/looks. I'm thinking you wouldn't want to wear them that way in everyday life.

Inge, great choices again as usual. About the J Crew (or other) tissue turtlenecks: I have a couple of them (though they are modal not cotton) and wear them exclusively layered, under vests, cardigans etc. when another thicker knit would be too warm. For solo wear I stick to more substantial knits.

The JCrew one seems nice for layering purposes indeed. I would sooner wear it underneath a blazer, a cardi or a denim jacket than wear two turtlenecks on top of each other (I haven't seen the catalogue, though, maybe it's a nice alternative?).

'Some warmer options': OK, let's have a look (I'll try to control myself; each time somebody asks for suggestions, I go a little link crazy;-).

Grrr, this is rather frustrating! As with basic sweaters (see Patience's thread), I think it's nice to have a turtleneck with some interesting details if you are planning to wear it as your only (or at least top) layer. But this appears to be hard to find when you need something without wool...

Thanks for backing me up Tanya. I don’t prefer ribbed polonecks because they don’t look pretty – much like corduroy. It’s that same rib/wale effect again.

I don’t encourage jersey polo necks either – too clingy, and see through. Can look “cheap”. (Please pardon that word). I wholeheartedly believe that the best and most versatile polo necks are in a fine gauge smooth knitwear fabrication (possibly with a spot of lycra). Textured styling is a plus.

I love turtlenecks, but I'm wondering about the JCrew tissue version. In the catalog there is one picture where it says the model is wearing 2. That seems wierd to me. They are super thin so I'm guessing I would need to wear a cami or some kind of layer underneath. Would THAT look wierd? I do like ribbed too, I guess because I think they add some kind of texture. I'll be interested to see what people find - I haven't even started looking for t-necks yet!

I could certainly be swayed on the ribbed point. It's (I think) a holdover from college when we all were into ribbed turtlenecks. Full disclosure, I also have two cashmere turtlenecks (not ribbed) and they are very uncomfortable and itchy. I'm just about to pass them on. I love POLO necks too!!

Tanya, Thank you, I could use a couple of the jcrew tnecks for layering. Have you see anything that's just a little warmer?

How funny, I was about to post the same question as Angie did. I am a big fan of turtlenecks, and discovered also last season that I prefer smooth styles. I still have a couple of ribbed ones that are in great condition and good colors, so I'll keep wearing them, but won't be getting any new ribbed ones for sure.

I am currently really attracted to thin layering ones, like these:

Since the temperatures are dropping quickly, I'm looking for great turtlenecks.
1. No wool
2. Ribbed
3. Not bulky
4. Nice variety of colors
5. Washable in delicate
I have 2 sorry ones left from several years ago. Theyre too short:the black one is faded and the white one is yellowed and sad. I wear turtleneck often but I don't think they're in stores in much variety yet.
Thanks for any suggestions.
