Brilliant, Brooklyn! I just purchased a top similar to the one you created but the ends are snapped on the opposite side at the hip. You can also wear it cascading down or tied in the front...

Love your DIY and great idea for other waterfall cardis!

I love all your variations but especially #4 and #5.

Thank you for the idea! The top looks great on you. I've actually done the reverse on a drapey top that buttons in a similar manner, I wore it unbuttoned and flowey for a waterfall effect and it looks like a totally different top. I never thought of trying this. I'll be playing with this in my closet.

Brooklyn - that's very clever and looks great. Can you get your hands on Hem gems? http://www.amazon.com/Gems-Bla.....;qid=14419... They make different types and shapes than you would not even need to sew on the snaps!! I use them to make non closure kimono cardigans into "button" cardis. Thanks for the awesome idea!!

Hi Eliza. Yes, they are sewn on and then they press together. I think you could do it the way you suggest if you just wanted to reign it in temporarily (for example for a particular outing). Earring studs would be a neater/prettier look than say safety pins. The disadvantage of the way I did it is that the "press studs" are permanent and therefore somewhat visible when you wear the cardigan open.

Great idea! I have a cardi with pointed ends that I did something similar with this week--I tucked the ends into the waistband of my jeans at my sides, to make a surplice-type top. I'll have to show it here sometime.

Interesting way to reign in a waterfall. Also like number four.

Are the fasteners sewn on? Or do they press in and out like a stud earring? Press stud was a new one on me. It would be cool if you could just use inexpensive stud earrings to hold the lighter knits temporarily.

I love what I learn here. Thanks!

Hi all,

This may be stating the obvious, but you can generally turn your waterfall cardigan into a drapey top/jacket by the strategic addition of a few press studs. I did this last week to a new waterfall cardigan. I like waterfall cardigans, but I sometimes like a little less volume (especially when worn under jackets/coats). It can be a little too much "flounce" for me (sorry Angie!). It can work for longer cardigans too - you will just end up with more of a tunic look. And if I can do it, anyone can.

Pics 1-5 show the different looks you can achieve with the addition of the press studs.

Pics 6-8 show how I did it. You put the press studs on the angled corners of the waterfall and on the collar. I have seen some RTW versions in which they put the press studs on the shoulders, but I chose the collar because it is more discreet and the collar is generally stronger.
